title more curious.
SUPERMAN SAVES
FAMILY HOME
Superman saved a family that was
about to lose their home to a bank
because they couldn’t pay up their
debts. It seems strange, but it’s true.
e couple, who live in the South with
their children, and asked to remain
anonymous, accidentally found what
is considered to be the Holy Grail of
comic books in their basement – a
lucky fi nd that could sell for a quarter
million dollars at an auction.
As they started the painful task of
packing up a home that had been
in the family since at least the 1950s,
they found a copy of Action Comics
No. 1, the fi rst in which Superman
ever appeared.
“ e bank was about ready to
foreclose,” said Vincent Zurzolo,
co-owner of ComicConnect.com, a
company that specializes in dealing with
rare comic books. “Literally, this family
was in tears. e family home was going
to be lost and they’re devastated. ey
can’t fi gure out a way out of this. ey
start packing things up. ey go into
the basement and start sifting through
boxes – trying to fi nd packing boxes –
and they stumble on eight or nine
comic books.”
Most of the comic books in the box
were worth between $10 and $30 but
one – dated June 1938 and depicting
the Man of Steel lifting a car above his
head – was extremely rare. at issue,
which originally sold for 10 cents, is
considered to have started the age of
the superheroes.
“It’s a tremendous piece of American
pop culture history,” Zurzolo said.
 e couple learned online that
ComicConnect.com had sold other
copies of Action Comics #1 for over
a million dollars in an online auction.
ey immediately texted a cell phone
picture to the fi rm’s co-owner, Stephen
Fishler.
“You couldn’t ask for a happier ending,”
Zurzolo said. “Superman saved the day.”
