PAST CONTINUOUS 
TENSE 
AND
USED TO
FORMA
Ex.: The children were watching TV last night.
Ex.: Was the teacher talking about a new topic during the class?
Ex.: Those men were not (weren’t) discussing the new plan.
SUBJECT + WAS/WERE + PRESENT PARTICIPLE (ING)
WAS → Usado para I, he, she ou it (sujeito no singular).
WERE → Usado para we, you e they (sujeito no plural).
USO 1
•Usamos o PAST CONTINUOUS para se referir a
ações que estavam em progresso num
determinado tempo passado.
Ex.: The girl was reading an interesting book last
week.
Ex.: People were taking precautions concerning the
disease.
USO 2
•Usamos o PAST CONTINUOUS para se referir a
ações que estavam acontecendo no passado quando
são interrompidas (ou não) por uma outra no passado.
Nesse caso, o conectivo when é normalmente usado
para indicar essa “encontro” de ações, e essa ação
que encontra outra deve ser expressa no passado
simples.
Ex.: I was sleeping this morning when my telephone
rang and woke me up.
Ex.: We were watching the final episode of the series
when it started to rain very hard.
USO 3
•Usamos o PAST CONTINUOUS para se referir a
ações que estavam acontecendo de forma simultânea
no passado. Nesse caso, os conectivos while e at
the same time são normalmente utilizados para
indicar o paralelismo dessas ações.
Ex.: Last week, while we were taking a test, the other
classes were watching a documentary about the future
of robotics.
Ex.: Last night, my father was doing the dishes at the
same time my mother was cooking dinner.
ATTENTION
•Não se usa o PAST CONTINUOUS para verbos
que indiquem sentidos (state verbs), como por
exemplo, percepção, emoção, pensamento,
sentimento e inteligência. Para esses casos
podemos usar, por exemplo, o SIMPLE PAST.
Ex.: I didn’t understand what you were saying.
Ex.: I loved the time I spent in Rome, but I had to
come back.
USED TO
• Usamos a expressão USED TO para fazermos referência
a um hábito ou ação regular que costumava acontecer no
passado, mas que não ocorre mais. Um verbo no infinitivo
(to + verb) deve sempre acompanhar a expressão USED
TO.
Ex.: “I used to rule the world.” - Coldplay
Ex.: I used to study in the afternoon when I was in high
school.
Ex.: My parents didn’t use to take us to the beach on
Sundays when we were younger.
Ex.: Did you use to play board games when you were 10?
