ABSTRACT 
The present article describes historic evolution conception process of an intercultural medicinal 
plant garden as a tool to construct social ecoperception about environmental health and cultural 
diversity, to improve environmental ethics. Through case study methodology it reports the 
process along five years. Hybrid Learning of Homeopathy, Phytotherapy, Bioethic were 
successful to scientific basic research initiation and novel biological research will be done using 
pathogenetic chemical markers to discuss biologic results. Results also show multi, inter and 
transdisciplinary effective activities and communications about primary care attention. 
Empirically, it has been developped a positive perception among patients, students and 
professionals about Homeopathy, as a qualitative humanized approach. Phytotherapy was mainly 
preconized by its nutraceutical, functional and adaptogenic effects. Indeed, intercultural 
medicinal plant garden construction process provided integrality of applied intercultural, 
interethnical and indigenous knowledge expressed from their affective memories and registered 
like an “open-air” intercultural plant collection (“plant library”), improving humanities as 
respect, ethic, kindness and integrated citizenship, besides the learning to coexist with 
complexity, singularity and self-direction without lost of professional ethic. So, as qualitative 
evaluation, it was considered that a mandate of equity, social justice and welfare to mental health 
promotion to this urban ethnic members and indigenous, as recommended in health promotion 
by the Ottawa Charter, has been fulfilled in this period (2018 – 2023) at this intersectoral 
ambulatory (which necessary includes medical anthropology and clinical bioethics studies) at 
Homeopathy Service, 7a Yard of General Hospital Santa Casa da Misericordia - Rio de 
Janeiro/Brazil.

RESUMO 
O presente artigo descreve o processo de concepção da evolução histórica de um horto 
intercultural de plantas medicinais como uma ferramenta para construir uma ecopercepção social

sobre a saúde ambiental e a diversidade cultural, para melhorar a ética ambiental. Por meio da 
metodologia de estudo de caso, ele relata o processo ao longo de cinco anos. O aprendizado 
híbrido de homeopatia, fitoterapia e bioética foi bem-sucedido na iniciação à pesquisa científica 
básica e novas pesquisas biológicas serão realizadas usando marcadores químicos patogenéticos 
para discutir os resultados biológicos. Os resultados também mostram atividades e comunicações 
eficazes multi, inter e transdisciplinares sobre a atenção primária. Empiricamente, foi 
desenvolvida uma percepção positiva entre pacientes, estudantes e profissionais sobre a 
Homeopatia, como uma abordagem qualitativa humanizada. A fitoterapia foi preconizada 
principalmente por seus efeitos nutracêuticos, funcionais e adaptogênicos. De fato, o processo de 
construção do horto intercultural de plantas medicinais proporcionou a integralidade do 
conhecimento intercultural, interétnico e indígena aplicado, expresso a partir de suas memórias 
afetivas e registrado como uma coleção intercultural de plantas "a céu aberto" ("biblioteca de 
plantas"), aprimorando humanidades como respeito, ética, gentileza e cidadania integrada, além 
do aprendizado da convivência com a complexidade, singularidade e autodirecionamento sem 
perda da ética profissional. Assim, como avaliação qualitativa, considerou-se que um mandato 
de equidade, justiça social e bem-estar para a promoção da saúde mental para esses membros 
étnicos urbanos e indígenas, conforme recomendado na promoção da saúde pela Carta de Ottawa, 
foi cumprido neste período (2018 - 2023) neste ambulatório intersetorial (que inclui 
necessariamente estudos de antropologia médica e bioética clínica) no Serviço de Homeopatia, 
7a Pátio do Hospital Geral da Santa Casa da Misericórdia - Rio de Janeiro/Brasil.

1 BACKGROUND 
Pharmacobotany and pathophysiology studies about High Ultra-Diluted sucussioned 
Solutions (HUD) obtained from hahnemannian method of multiple flasks of Euphorbia tirucalli 
were developed, aiming to stablish pathogenetical chemical markers to verify biological actions 
distinct from ponderal chemical markers (KUSTER & FERRO, 2003). Indeed, this proposition 
showed significative vegetal development evidences through attended cultive in pots 
(VARRICCHIO et al., 2006), offering a novel kind of scientific assays (GASPAR et al., 2017). 
Later, undergraduate students of medicine participate in a supervised internship to 
outpatient at ambulatory-school (October 2018 – October 2021). To follow-up a pharmacobotany 
study, since from seedling of Calendula Officinalis till to prepare of HUD. They planted 
Calendula Officinalis seedlings, destined to studies in pharmacobotany to be in touch with 
pharmacotechnical prepares (MARTINS et al., 2022). 
To prepare medicinal garden, there was plant seedlings of Calendula off in accordance 
withgood agricultural techniques. At first, three seeds in ten pots, made in triplicate (N = 90), to

obtain explants of quality analized whose evaluation was about plant development (explants 
percentual: weight, size, viability, morphology). And to visit a pharmacy-school as an 
opportunity to learn how to prepare matrix extracts and High Ultra-Diluted Solutions (HUD) of 
Calendula off 6DH (MARTINS et al., 2022). 
Besides, to make approach of undergraduate students to Homeopathic pathophysiology 
and semiology, they learnt how to elaborate a clinical protocol research and followed patients, 
also at the Homeopathy Service. Patients received conventional therapy and, as complementary 
therapy, Homeopathy. It was adopted the external use of HUD Ledum palustre 6ch for the 
cleansing of skin lesions with torpid evolution and modulating inflammatory responses, whose 
mechanisms of action are already described in the scientific literature and is authorized by 
BR/MS/ ANVISA (MARTINS et al., 2022). 
Outpatient clinical care addressed the pathophysiology and miasms of the symptoms and 
signs of neglected chronic parasitic diseases prevalent in our country, identified by anamnesis 
and physical examination. They were also correlated to biological activities in plant chemistry 
classes besides official homeopathic brazilian pharmacopoeia. The objective was to learn 
differences among mechanisms of actions of Phytotherapy and Homeopathy (MARTINS et al., 
2022). 
Semiology, Pathophysiology, Phytotherapy and Homeopathy were taught through active 
methodology by the Moodle platform (Hybrid Learning - HL). They also learned how to use 
applicatives for monitoring injuries, through educational site and online academic support 
journals of Project of Environmental Health, Parasitology, Bioethics (INFOSAPB, SEIVA and 
VITAE Journals of SAPB Project from LIPAT Laboratory at Pharmacy Faculty of Federal 
University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ/Brazil - MUSMANNO et al., 2020), building rationality for 
the external topic use of homeopathic and herbal medicines (MUSMANNO et al., 2022, a; 2023). 
As already proposed by OIT (1989) and the international psychiatry group to ethnic 
communities insered in a global mental health promotion (PATEL et al., 2018), the Homeopathy 
Service at the 7th Infirmary situ at General Hospital Santa Casa de Misericordia in Rio de Janeiro, 
through its clinical medical team of Benoit Mure Nucleus of Assistance Teaching and Research, 
offer medical care and primary health attention to ethnical members living at Rio de Janeiro 
urban city aiming to promote equity. At waiting room, there are applyed educative health material 
to evoke welfare produced by SAPB-LIPAT Project/UFRJ associated with advisor from strictu

sensu post-graduation of Instituto Nacional de Propriedade Industrial (INPI) – a curricular 
discipline named Traditional Knowledge and Associated Rights (VARRICCHIO et al., 2022). 
So, multi, inter and transdisciplinary Nucleus was authorized by hospital direction and 
had made a medicinal intercultural plant garden in partnership with agricultural/environmental 
educator and traditional knowledge of ethnic community leaders (VARRICCHIO et al., 2022; 
VARRICCHIO, 2022a). 
 
2 AIMS 
To describe historic evolution learning process of an intercultural medicinal plant garden 
as a tool to construct social ecoperception about environmental health, cultural diversity and to 
improve environmental ethics. 
 
3 METHODOLOGY 
Case study (report of the process over the years – VENTURA, 2007). 
 
4 RESULTS 
Ethnical leaders voluntary and cooperatively worked to elucidate people in general and 
health professionals who cares, about their costums and culture (GONÇALVES et al., 2019; 
VACITE et al., 2023), also indigenous leaders (MACHADO, C.V. da S./DUIGÓ-TUKANO et 
al., 2023). 
Through hybrid learning and face-to-face activities completely realized, undergraduated 
students had qualitative perception of the relevance about morphology and quality of plant 
development, chemistry plant production, aiming for resolutive and sustainable actions based 
upon pathophysiology of neglected chronic diseases (GOMES et al., 2023; a). 
To environmental health, there were realized sensibilization and educational activities 
(GASPAR et al., 2020; GASPAR & RONCARATI, 2021; HANSEL – MARTINS et al., 2023). 
Thinking about climate changes, investigations about fungi proliferation in seeds and salt 
tolerance in plants were performed with HUD with hormetic and ponderal controls extracts 
(GASPAR et al., 2023, a). 
They entered in contact with intercultural education and clinical bioethics to cultural 
diversity, it was offered equity of access, as an health promotion activity (KOTTOW, 2011;

VARRICCHIO et al., 2023) amplifying humanities: as respect for human being, environmental 
ethic, which empirically suggested the increase of cultural intelligence (GONÇALVES et al., 
2019; MENDES et al., 2021; 2022; FREIRE SOUZA SILVA et al., 2023; CRUZ FILHO, et al., 
2023). 
After Fabio Bolognani’s - head of staff - invitation since 2018, based on Dutra (2012), 
study and joint planning were carried out in a view to revitalizing that garden cared for by the 
Homeopathy Service (videos presented at HOMEOPATHY SERVICE, 2020; 2021), also as a 
health space (GASPAR et al., 2020). In critical pandemic period, the production of this garden 
of vegetables, fruits and plants to prepare tea helped the several workers of HGSCM-RJ, which 
resulted in an environmental booklet made by hospital employees who work in Homeopathy 
Service (MORAES et al., 2021). 
 
5 DISCUSSION 
Through investigations upon chemical markers of a plant species, there was developed an 
investigation about which pathogenetical chemical markers shall be monitored to evaluate 
biological aspects from micropropagation and attended cultives with HUD (MUSMANNO et al., 
2020). Intercultural medicinal plant garden attended cultive was a teaching goal 
(HOMEOPATHY SERVICE, 2020; 2021), however, its meaning and importance exceeded 
expectations. 
The first interdisciplinary record discussed was on aspects about which plants were 
choosen, in biology aspects, ethnobotany, cultive attended conditions and environmental 
education process (GASPAR et al., 2022). The second record addressed its positive receptivity 
from patients as a health space in the aspect of reception and matrix support (LEAL et al., 2022); 
and it was also reported its function as psychosocial care for these elderly people of ethnic origin 
in an urban situation in Rio de Janeiro. That’s why it was necessary to prepare the health team 
based on existing public policies to aging in Brazil and Latin America - OPS (WENDLING DA 
SILVA et al., 2023). 
Elderly population, in general, develops malignancies. Besides this, although they are 
respectfull named by their groups as “Alive Libraries” some ethnic patients treated at the 
Homeopathy Service were at risk of food and nutritional deficiencies (OLIVEIRA et al., 2020)

and, indeed, there are communications about chronic exposition to endocrine disruptors as 
pointed by HANSEL-MARTINS et al. (2021). 
So, surveys were carried out considering plant species with adaptogenic effect 
(PANOSSIAN et al., 1999; WASIM et al., 2020) and upon functional foods and phytonutrients 
whose actions are antioxidants (BELLIZZI et al., 2022). Investigations regarding cultivation 
(BELLIZZI et al., 2022a) and differentvegetable uses for health were carried out, as on açaí 
(Euterpe oleracea) and Echinacea sp (ALMEIDA, D./TUKANO et al., 2022), Pomegranate 
(Punica granatum - VACITE et al., 2023), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata - DELAUNAY DE 
SOUZA et al., 2023). 
It’s well documented the impact of many hours a day plugged in internet to sedentarism, 
obesity, depression manifestations, loneliness, besides current infantilization of the occidental 
elderly. So, in addition, physical orientation to guidance on the importance of carrying out 
physical exercise, frequently still not appreciated by non-ethnic elderly people, while movement 
is common among ethnic elderly people (known as “people on the move”) (WENDLING DA 
SILVA et al., 2023). 
Nutraceuticals are substances whose may be an aliment or part of this, that offer medicinal 
benefits, including prevention or treatment of sickness. Such investigations about nutraceuticals 
resulted in a workshop on functional foods from ethnic use, with the creation of a booklet on 
ethnonutrition, available for viewing in the Homeopathy Service's waiting room. Due to the 
relevance of the topic and its scope, in a period in which the world incidence of intestinal 
neoplasia is on the rise, it has already been circulated free of charge, via smartphone applicative, 
to all Homeopathy Service's clientele (BELLIZZI et al., 2023). 
In near future, the concept of pathogenetical chemical markers will be used in novel 
scientific basic vegetal research initiation with specimens from this medicinal garden. 
Finally, Homeopathy Service situ at 7a Infirmary of HGSCM-RJ) understand 
environmental ethic (including bio and cultural diversity and their care) as a consequence of 
knowledge evoked from homeopathic philosophy principles, specially Hahnemann’s paragraph 
9 which preconizes self-realization in several sectors of life, respecting individual, collective, 
traditional and ethnic singularities constructing equity, through anthropologic and clinical 
bioethics studies, promoting welfare and mental health to population with intense psychic 
suffering (MACHADO/Duigó-TUKANO et al., 2023).

These mainly “first principle” homeopathic concept, extensively reflected among 
physicians specialists, when sprayed in society, may contribute as a relevant sensibilization 
environmental model to improve well fare and life quality (as a highway), as already shown 
through locally works performed previous published, reinforced during construction of this 
meaningful, pacific, harmonic, resilient health space, in a friendly cosmopolitan city. This level 
of high production with effectiveness brought feedback to support intercultural education and 
socio-cultural development (VARRICCHIO et al., 2022). 
At an amplified perspective, this profile of ethic behavior and education of citizen build 
trust, confidence, joyfull, kindness and integration (AMARANTE, 2010). These are some of the 
qualitative social contributions of Homeopathy Service situ at Rio de Janeiro/Brazil, whose are 
in close contact to mental health promotion and social sciences (VARRICCHIO, 2022a). 
 
6 CONCLUSION 
The practical activity initiated (hybrid learning, scientific initiation and ambulatory 
service) encourages students in clinical reasoning about complementary therapeutic association 
with Homeopathy for patients whose evolution is below the expected prognosis with 
conventional therapy. 
It has been developped a positive perception among patients, students and professionals 
about the approach of Homeopathy, a qualitative humanized approach, which leaves your share 
to minimize suffering of population. 
Phytotherapy was mainly preconized by its nutraceutical, functional and adaptogenic 
effects. Brazilian species were most utilized, besides plants given from ethnical traditional and 
indigenous leaders present in Rio de Janeiro. 
Intercultural medicinal plant garden construction process was a rich experience because 
of integratility of applied intercultural, interethnical and indigenous knowledge expressed like an 
open-air cultural collection (plant library), that can be renewed and made in other places but 
always will be a novel garden with other histories. 
As its didatical aspect, it was a deep opportunity this concretization which also promoted 
self-realization to each component of the group because of increment of humanities (so necessary 
to be remembered) especially ethic, kindness and integrated citizenship, learning and coexisting

with a non-linear way of live (self-direction). It improved essentially discernment, about what 
matter and what doesn’t. 
For all these reasons, and others that will be discussed later, it is considered that a mandate 
of equity and social justice, as recommended in health promotion by the Ottawa Charter (WHO, 
1986), has been fulfilled.
