* PRÁTICAS DE LEITURA E ESCRITA EM LÍNGUA INGLESA UFRN ESCOLA DE CIÊNCIAS E TECNOLOGIA PROFª DRª MARCELA SILVESTRE / PROF DR LAURO MELLER * WORD FORMATION Nesta unidade, veremos algumas regras para formação de palavras em língua inglesa. Embora haja limitações na aplicação dessas regras, elas serão de grande valia na identificação da categoria gramatical a que pertencem as palavras, o que otimizará o processo de leitura e interpretação de textos. PRÁTICAS DE LEITURA E ESCRITA EM LÍNGUA INGLESA Profª Drª Marcela Silvestre – Prof. Dr. Lauro Meller – ECT - UFRN * Os três principais processos de formação de palavras são: 1) AFFIXATION: Adição de prefixos e sufixos. Ex1 – Pleasant / Unpleasant (agradável, desagradável) Ex2 – Meaning / Meaningnful, meaningless (Sentido/Significado significativo, sem sentido) Ex3 – Friend / Friendship (amigo, amizade) Ex4 – Teach / Teacher (ensinar / professor) PRÁTICAS DE LEITURA E ESCRITA EM LÍNGUA INGLESA Profª Drª Marcela Silvestre – Prof. Dr. Lauro Meller – ECT - UFRN * AFIXOS são letras ou grupos de letras que se acrescentam ao começo (prefixo) ou final (sufixo) da raiz de uma palavra para formar novas palavras. Por exemplo, quando a raiz comfort é acrescida do prefixo un- e do sufixo -able, forma-se uma nova palavra: uncomfortable. Alguns PREFIXOS (dis-, il-, im-, in-, ir-, un-) indicam negação, como em disapprove, illegal, impossible, insecure, irregular e unidentified. Outros, como o prefixo over-, são usados com o sentido de demais, em excesso como em overtired, overwork, overuse e overweight. Já o prefixo under- significa o oposto, menos que o necessário ou desejado, como em underage, underpaid e underestimate. * 2 ) CONVERSION: Adoção de uma palavra em outra categoria gramatical, sem que haja alterações. E.g. Drive (verbo, dirigir): “I learnt to drive when I was 17”; drive (substantivo, percurso que se dirige): “It’s a long drive from Glasgow to London”. Drink (verbo, beber): “Martha doesn’t drink coffee”. Drink (substantivo, bebida): “Have we got time for a quick drink?” PRÁTICAS DE LEITURA E ESCRITA EM LÍNGUA INGLESA Profª Drª Marcela Silvestre – Prof. Dr. Lauro Meller – ECT - UFRN * O prefixo mis-, por sua vez, indica a ideia de erro, como em misconduct e misdirect. Os SUFIXOS podem formar verbos como -ify, -ize/-ise, -en. Exemplos: simple – simplify, central – centralize, dark – darken, modern – modernize. Também podem formar substantivos: approve - appoval, perform – performance, employ – employee, act – actor, disapoint – disapointment, dark – darkness, friend – friendship. Além disso, podem formar adjetivos: avoid – avoidable, emotion – emotional, power – powerful e advérbios: careful – carefully, day – daily. * 3 ) COMPOUNDING: Junção de palavras para formar uma terceira. E.g. Tea+pot → teapot Arm+chair → armchair Web+log → weblog → blog Os trocadilhos seguem esse princípio, nem sempre traduzível... Podemos organizar essas palavras em categorias. Vejamos algumas delas: COUNT NOUN + ...
