Session 37 Levels Of Development In Business • Every model is part right and part wrong 1. Every model is wrong to some extent, in some context, or from some perspective. 2. It's not that it's wrong, it's that there will always be refinements. It's right with the information that it utilizes. • Anytime you're using a particular model and you learn another one that contradicts or refines your current model, don't throw away the old one... instead combine the two and use them together. 1. Instead of throwing away your screwdriver when you get a hammer, keep both. Both are useful. 2. Don't marginalize old models. Integrate them and use them when it makes sense. • Each of us are primarily at one level of development, but different parts of us (spiritually, ethically, intellectually, etc.) can be at different levels. • Most of the people you'll interact with in business will be either 4's, 5's, or 6's. • Different parts of business attract different world views. 1. Tasks that are repetitive are often 4's. (Manufacturing, accounting, customer service) 2. Sales & Marketing are often 5's. 3. Creative areas like design, computer developers are often 6's. • Leverage the strengths of each of these levels in different parts of your business. • When you're communicating with 4's, 5's, and 6's in your business, you'll benefit by communicating with them differently. 1. 4's: talk about how important it is to follow rules in the company. 2. 5's: talk about how the sky's the limit to their success, it all depends on their own achievement. 3. 6's: talk about how we're making a difference in the world, how we're all about team work, etc. • New managers, even if they personally are at a 4 or a 5, often jump down several levels when they start managing. 1. They often go to level 3: I make the rules, I can change them as I want because I sign the checks. 2. Then they go to 4 by making standardized rules and procedures. a. Then they go to 5 by making a culture and incentive system where people will be self-motivated.
