FORMAÇÃO DO PRESENTE (SIMPLE PRESENT) 1. Na conjugação de alguns verbos, basta acrescentar a letra -s à 3ª pessoa do singular (He, She, It) para formar o Presente Simples. Os outros pronomes, I, You, We e They formam a conjugação do Presente Simples com o verbo no infinitvo sem TO e não recebem a letra -s ao final do verbo, como consta na tabela anteriormente apresentada. Veja alguns exemplos: She sings in a choir. (Ela canta num coral.) He loves her. (Ele a ama.) This washing machine works well. (Esta máquina de lavar funciona bem.) They work in a factory. (Eles trabalham em uma fábrica.) We study at Oxford University. Everything ends up some day. (Tudo acaba um dia.) Nothing interests me. (Nada me interessa.) 2. Com os verbos terminados em -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, -z e -o, acrescenta-se -es a eles para formar o Presente Simples com a terceira pessoa do singular (He, She, It): - Wash: She washes her hair every day. (Ela lava o cabelo todos os dias.) - Kiss: The father kisses his children when they wake up. - Go: He goes to the park on weekends. - Watch: He watches all sitcoms which are broadcast on television. - Buzz: Bee buzzes among the flowers. - Fix: It fixes the shelf to the wall. (Isso fixa a prateleira na parede.) - Do: Susan does her homework regularly. He, She, It): - Try: She tries to do a good work as a Vet. - Fly: The little bird flies so high. (O pequeno pássaro voa tão alto.) - Study: He studies engineering. (Ele estuda engenharia.) - Cry: She cries when she sees poor child in the streets. Para a 3ª pessoa do singular (He, She, It), o verbo to have possui a forma has: He has lots of friends. (Ele tem muitos amigos.) She has brown hair. (Ela tem cabelo castanho.) 6 - FORMA NEGATIVA E INTERROGATIVA: As formas negativas e interrogativas do Simple Present são feitas com o verbo auxiliar Do (do/does), acompanhado do verbo principal no infinitivo sem to. 1. Forma Negativa: Para formar uma oração negativa no Simple Present, usa-se do not para os Pronomes Pessoais I, You, We, You e They e does not para a 3ª pessoa do singular (He, She, It). Observe a tabela abaixo: I do not work You do not work He does not work She does not work It does not work We do not work You do not work They do not work * FORMAS ABREVIADAS: do not - don't / does not - doesn't. Observe alguns exemplos com as formas abreviadas: I don't talk to her. (Eu não falo com ela.) You don't need to tell me anything. (Você não precisa me dizer nada.) He doesn't live here. (Ele não mora aqui.) She doesn't like him. (Ela não gosta dele.) It doesn't work well. (Isto não funciona bem.) We don't read newspaper. (Nós não lemos jornal.) You don't have children. (Vocês não têm filhos.) They don't go out on weekends. (Eles não saem nos finais de semana.) NEGATIVE FORM: I/YOU/WE/YOU/THEY + DO NOT + VERBO NOINFINITIVO SEM TO HE/SHE/IT + DOES NOT + VERBO NO INFINITIVO SEM TO 2. Forma Interrogativa: Para formar uma oração interrogativa no Simple Present, usa-se o verbo auxiliar Do ANTES DO SUJEITO para os Pronomes Pessoais I, You, We, You e They e does para a 3ª pessoa do singular (He, She, It). Observe os exemplos abaixo: Do I need it? (Eu preciso disto?) Do you have a summerhouse? (Você tem casa na praia?) 7 What do toads eat? (O que os sapos comem?) How do you know she is married? (Como você sabe que ela é casada?) Where does he work? (Onde ele trabalha?) Does it work? (Isto funciona?) Do we know her? (Nós a conhecemos?) Do you have a car? (Vocês têm carro?) Do they go out on weekends? (Eles saem nos finais de semana?) INTERROGATIVE FORM: DO + I/YOU/WE/YOU/THEY + VERBO NO INFINITIVO SEM TO DOES + HE/SHE/IT + VERBO NO INFINITIVO SEM TO 3. Forma Interrogativo-Negativa: Para formar uma oração interrogativo-negativa no Simple Present, usa- se do ou does antes do sujeito e coloca-se not após o sujeito. Veja: *Do I not need it? (= Don't I need it?) (Eu não preciso disto?) *Why do you not take a day off tomorrow? (= Why don't you take a day off tomorrow?) *Does she not like rice and bean? (= Doesn't she like rice and bean?) (Ela não gosta de arroz e feijão?) *Does he not understand? (= Doesn't he understand?) (Ele não entende?) *Does it not work? (Doesn't it work?) (Isto não funciona?) *Why do we not go to the beach? (= Why don't we go to the beach?) (Por que não vamos à praia?) *Do you not have a dog? (= Don't you have a dog?) (Você não tem cachorro?) *Do they not speak English? (= Don't they speak English?) (Eles não falam Inglês?) 8 OBSERVAÇÕES: 1. Com relação ao verbo to work, é importante salientar que, além de significar trabalhar, ele é bastante usado no sentido de funcionar, quando então o sujeito neutro it é empregado. Por exemplo: My hair dryer works well. Por exemplo: He does believe in God. (Ele acredita em Deus, sim.) 3. Na forma Interrogativo-Negativa, os verbos have e be também posicionam-se antes do sujeito, assim como o auxiliar do / does. Por exemplo: Are you not ready? (= Aren't you ready?) (Você não está pronto?) Is Susan not at home? (= Isn't Susan at home?) (Susan não está em casa?) Is the answer not obvious? (= Isn't the answer obvious?) (A resposta não é óbvia?) 4. Forma Imperativo Afirmativo: O Imperativo Afirmativo é formado pelo infinitivo sem TO e o sujeito (you) está subentendido. Observe os exemplos abaixo: Eat your meal! (Coma sua refeição!) Talk to me! (Fale comigo!) Sit on the chair! (Sente na cadeira!) Wash the dishes! (Lave a louça!) 5. Forma Imperativo Negativo: Para formar uma oração imperativa negativa no Simple Present, usa-se o verbo auxiliar do/does + not e o verbo permanece no infinitivo sem TO. Veja os exemplos: Don't scream to me! (Não grite comigo!) Don't talk to her! (Não fale com ela!) Don't read this book! (Não leia este livro!) - VERBOS MODAIS E O PRESENTE SIMPLES: Os Verbos Modais (can, must, may, shall, will, etc) possuem apenas uma fórmula para o Simple Present, isto é, não se acrescenta -s à 3ª pessoa do singular (I can / he can / I must / she must / I will / it will). A ação teve início e fim no passado. Observe a tabela abaixo: - FORMA AFIRMATIVA: I worked yesterday You worked yesterday He worked yesterday She worked yesterday It worked yesterday We worked yesterday You worked yesterday 27 They worked yesterday - PARTICULARIDADES DA ORTOGRAFIA DO SIMPLE PAST: 1. Ações acabadas em um tempo definido, é frequentemente usado com advérbios de tempo comoyesterday, yesterday morning, last week, last month, last night, the day before yesterday, three years ago, in 1998, in the twentieth century, etc. Susan helped him last night. (Susan o ajudou ontem à noite.) My parents traveled to Roma in 2005 and they enjoyed it a lot. (Meus pais viajaram para Roma em 2005 e gostaram muito da viagem.) 29 I liked to read fairy tales when I was a child. Whenever someone walked past the gate, the dog barked. O verbo auxiliar (did) + not posiciona- se sempre entre o sujeito e o verbo principal.Observe a tabela abaixo: I did not work You did not work He did not work She did not work It did not work 30 We did not work You did not work They did not work * FORMAS ABREVIADAS: did not - didn't. Observe alguns exemplos com as formas abreviadas: Steve didn't work as much as Paul. (Steve não trabalhou tanto como Paul.) He didn't pay the bill. (Ele não pagou a conta.) She didn't work yesterday. (Ela não trabalhou ontem.) He didn't taste the pasta at lunch. We didn't say that! (Nós não falamos isso!) NEGATIVE FORM: SUJEITO + DID NOT + VERBO NO INFINITIVO SEM TO 2. Veja: Did I work? Did You work? Did He work? Did She work? Did It work? Did We work? Did You work? Did They work? Did he callme yesterday? (Ele me ligou ontem?) Why did he do that? (Por que ele fez isso?) Did you drink wine last night? (Você tomou vinho ontem à noite?) Did you clean your bedroom? (Você limpou o seu quarto?) When did he confess the crime? - Used to - FORMAÇÃO: used to + verbo no infinitivo - FORMA AFIRMATIVA I used to work You used to work He used to work She used to work It used to work We used to work You used to work They used to work AFIRMATIVE FORM: SUJEITO + USED TO + VERBO NO INFINITIVO O used to é usado para indicar: 1. My mother used to tell me stories when I was a child. (Minha mãe costumava me contar histórias quando eu era criança.) She used to study hard. (Ela estudou muito no passado.) I used to exercise a lot, but now I'm too lazy to do that. Situações no passado que não existem mais: I used to have a dog. (Eu tinha um cachorro.) I used to live in Los Angels. (Eu morava em Los Angeles.) It used to rain more often in the past. (Chovia com mais frequência no passado.) OBSERVAÇÃO: O used to é sempre usado para expressar o passado. - FORMA NEGATIVA: 32 Para formar uma oração negativa com o used to, usa-se did (verbo auxiliar no passado) + not para todas as pessoas. A forma used (passado) passa para o presente, use. Observe a tabela abaixo: I did not use to work You did not use to work He did not use to work She did not use to work It did not use to work We did not use to work You did not use to work They did not use to work I didn't use to go out when I was 15. Em inglês, os adjetivos possuem três graus de comparação: grau normal (beautiful), grau comparativo (as beautiful as, more beautiful than) e grau superlativo (the most beautiful). Veja os exemplos abaixo: John is as fat as his wife. João é tão gordo quanto sua esposa. She speaks French as well as the rest of us. Ela fala Francês tão bem quanto nós. Alexander is not as fat as his father. Cristina is not so tall as her sister. Exemplo: Come in and get warm, your hands are as coldas ice. Exemplo: He'll be good in business: he's as hard as nails. (Ele será bom nos negócios: é frio e calculista.) 38 as ugly as sin ("feio como o diabo") - Uma pessoa, animal, objeto que é tão feio (a) quanto cometer um pecado (sin = pecado) Exemplo: He was as ugly as sin, that's why we didin't give the role to him. Exemplo: I'm tired as hell of listening to your problems*. As good as it gets! (Melhor é impossível!) Exemplo: I intend to spend my vacation as good as it gets: in a divine brazilian beach. Observe os exemplos abaixo: Julia is more beautiful than Roberta. Julia é mais bonita do que Roberta. John is more intelligent than Richard. João é mais inteligente do que Ricardo. She is less attractive than her friend. Golf is a sport less popular than soccer. GRAU SUPERLATIVO: 1. The most... (o/a mais ...) e the least ... Veja os exemplos abaixo: Julia is the most intelligent girl of my classroom. This is the most beautiful picture I've ever seen. This is the place least attractive I've ever been. Veja os exemplos abaixo: Adjetivo Comparativo de Superioridade Superlativo tall taller (than) (the) tallest narrow narrower (than) (the) narrowest large larger (than) (the) largest great greater (than) (the) greatest light lighter (than) (the) lightest small smaller (than) (the) smallest long longer (than) (the) longest old older (than) (the) oldest easy easier (than) (the) easiest sunny sunnier (than) (the) sunniest rainy rainier (than) (the) rainiest poor poorer (than) (the) poorest rich richer (than) (the) richest low lower (than) (the) lowest high higher (than) (the) highest funny funnier (than) (the) funniest busy busier (than) (the) busiest weak weaker (than) (the) weakest OBSERVAÇÕES: 1. Veja outros exemplos abaixo: - happy: 40 She is happy. Ela esta/é feliz. She is happier than her sister. She is the happiest girl I know. - ugly: She is ugly. Ela é feia. She is uglier than her sister. She is the ugliest girl I know. - sunny: I like sunny days in all seasons. Today is sunnier than yesterday. Tomorrow will be the sunniest day of the year.Amanhã será o dia mais ensolarado do ano. - busy: I am a busy person. Sou uma pessoa ocupada/atarefada. She is busier than her workmate. She is the busiest person in this company. Ela é a pessoa mais ocupada nesta empresa. 2. Os Adjetivos terminados em e, perdem o e para receberem -er ou -est: - large: 41 This room is larger than the other one. (Grau Comparativo) Esta sala é maior do que a outra. This is the largest classroom of the School. - late: Today the flights are later than yesterday. This is the latest plane I have ever taken. Grau Comparativo: hotter (than), bigger (than), slimmer (than), thinner (than) Grau Superlativo: (the) hottest, (the) biggest, (the) slimmest, (the) thinnest. ATENÇÃO: Nunca forme o comparativo de um adjetivo acrescentando -er + more ou -est + most a um único adjetivo. 4. Nesses casos, o grau de comparação é feito colocando more emost antes do adjetivo. Observe os exemplos abaixo: - just: He is a just man. (Grau Normal) Ele é um homem justo. He is more just than his brother. He is the most just man I know. Na tabela abaixo encontram-se as formas comparativas e superlativas irregulares dos adjetivos: Grau Normal Grau Comparativo Grau Superlativo bad worse (than) (the) worst far farther (than) (the) farthest far further (than) (the) furthest good better (than) (the) best ill worse (than) (the) worst late later (than) (the) later ou (the) latest little less (than) (the) least many more (than) (the) most much more (than) (the) most some more (than) (the) most Observe os exemplos: My clothes are better than yours. Minhas roupas são melhores que as suas. That is the worst movie I have ever seen. Observe: Poor little girl! (NOT Poor lttle!) The most important thing is to be healthy. (NOT The most important is to be healthy.) 2. Veja alguns exemplos: the blind - the dead - the deaf - thehandicapped - the jobless - the mentally ill - the old - the poor - the rich - the unemployed - the young The young don't know anything about life. (Os jovens não sabem nada sobre a vida.) 43 He helps the poor. (Ele ajuda os pobres) The unemployed are losing hope. (Os desempregados estão perdendo a esperança.) Estas expressões se encontram no plural: the dead = the dead people, MAS NUNCA: the dead person. É importante ressaltar que estas expressões não podem ser usadas no caso genitivo: the problems of the poor ou poor people's problems, MAS NUNCA: the poor's problems. Os substantivos também não são necessários quando a estrutura for: more ou many + adjective. Quando não houver the antes dos adjetivos, a estrutura se forma com both e and e dispensa o substantivo. Veja: There are many blind working on this factory. The government provides opportunities for both rich and poor. Observe: The Spanish colonized some lands in South America. - Em algumas sentenças, a forma the + adjective se encontra no singular. Alguns exemplos são: the accused, the undersigned, the deceased, the former e the latter. Veja o exemplo abaixo: He is interested in the supernatural. 3. Observe abaixo: - Preposition + noun/-ing: I'm interested in cookery. I'm interested in learning to cook. - Infinitive verbs: You don't look happy to see him. The shrimp is ready to eat. - Clauses: I am happy that you passed in all your exams. It's important that everybody should feel comfortable. 44 (FONTE: http://www.solinguainglesa.com.br/conteudo/indice4.php) EXERCISES Comparative and superlative. Notice the ADJECTIVES DEGREE: A consumer is a person who buys things, and a consumer society is a society that encourages people to buy and use goods. Some people think that a consumer society provides people with better lives. People in consumer societies tend to live more comfortably. They eat a wider variety of food. They go to restaurants more often. They also buy a lot of products, maybe more than they need. Products such as TVs, cell phones, and computers used to be luxuries. Today people can buy these things more easily than ever before. The market for these goods is growing faster all the time. Consumer societies encourage people to buy bigger and better products. For example, “smarter” phones come out every year. In a consumer society, people are often buying newer and more advanced products. This creates a lot of waste. Nowadays, many people are thinking more seriously about the effects of consumer societies on the environment, and they are trying to become more responsible consumers. Observe as formas e os usos deste tempo verbal: * FORMA CONTRAÍDA: I/You/He/She/It/We/You/They' ll - FORMA AFIRMATIVA: I will wait for you in front of the College. (Esperarei por você na frente da faculdade.) They will help us when they have a time. (Eles nos ajudarão quando tiverem tempo.) She will only be at home next month. AFFIRMATIVE FORM: SUJEITO + WILL + INFINITIVO DO VERBO PRINCIPAL SEM 'TO'. - FORMA NEGATIVA: A forma negativa do Simple Future forma-se acrescentando not após o auxiliar modal will. O verbo principal permanece no infinitivo sem 'TO'. Veja alguns exemplos: * FORMA CONTRAÍDA: WILL + NOT = WON'T Rachel won't come. (Raquel não virá.) I think it will not rain in the day of your marriage. He won't go with us. (Ele não irá conosco.) I will not celebrate my birthday next year, I've spent much money in my last birthday's party. NEGATIVE FORM: SUJEITO + WILL + NOT + INFINITIVO DO VERBO PRINCIPAL SEM 'TO'. FORMA INTERROGATIVA 51 Na forma interrogativa do Simple Future o auxiliar modal will posiciona-se antes do sujeito. O verbo principal permanece no infinitivo sem 'TO'. Veja alguns exemplos: Will he travel abroad? (Ele viajará para o exterior?) Where will you spend your vacation? (Onde você passará as férias?) INTERROGATIVE FORM: WILL + SUJEITO + VERBO PRINCIPAL SEM 'TO' OBSERVAÇÃO: Com a primeira pessoa do singular (I) e a primeira do plural (We), é possível substituir will por shall. Shall we order? (Vamos fazer o pedido?) Shall we go? (Vamos?) Shall we dance? He's sure his team will win the championship. Penelope is a good student; she'll pass the exame. (Penélope é uma boa aluna, ela passará no teste.) 2. Expressar ações completas no futuro: John will work in New York next year. Cars will be more economical in the future. (Os carros serão mais econômicos no futuro.) 3. Expressar decisões tomadas no momento da fala: The phone is ringing. I'll answer it! 4. Veja alguns exemplos: 52 These boxes are heavy; I'll help you lift it. Sorry, I forgot to bring your book, but I'll bring it tomorrow. Will you close the door, please? Will you bring me my coat, please? Will you please take my suitcase to my room? Observe suas formas e usos: - FORMA AFIRMATIVA: A forma afirmativa desta estrutura verbal é formada por going to seguido do infinitivo do verbo principalsem 'TO'. O verbo to be serve como auxiliar e se posiciona após o sujeito: We are going to spend our vacation in Paris. (Vamos passar nossas férias em Paris.) My mother is going to take me to the school today. (Minha mãe vai me levar para escola hoje.) I'm going to call you tonight. (Vou te ligar hoje à noite.) I'm going to have a shower before having dinner. (Vou tomar banho antes de jantar.) AFFIRMATIVE FORM: SUJEITO + VERBO TO BE + GOING TO + INFINITIVO DO VERBO PRINCIPAL SEM 'TO'. - FORMA NEGATIVA: Na forma negativa, coloca-se not entre o verbo to be e going to: I'm not going to talk to you until you apologize for what you have done. They are not going to come. (Eles não vão vir.) I'm not going to have any difficulty to do that. NEGATIVE FORM: SUJEITO + VERBO TO BE + NOT + GOING TO + INFINITIVO DO VERBO PRINCIPAL SEM 'TO'. FORMA INTERROGATIVA: Na forma interrogativa de going to, o verbo to be se posiciona antes do sujeito. Observe alguns exemplos: Are they going to help us? (Eles vão nos ajudar?) What are you going to do next weekend? Is she going to have a baby? (Ela vai ter um filho?) Is he going to stay here? (Ele vai ficar aqui?) INTERROGATIVE FORM: VERBO TO BE + SUJEITO + GOING TO + INFINITIVO DO VERBO PRINCIPAL SEM 'TO'. WILL ou GOING TO? - USOS: Going to é usado para: 1. Expressar intenção de fazer alguma coisa: I'm going to eat less to try to lose weight. It will be hard to get used to. Parents will order a baby who will grow up to become his new job because he is not quite prepared a genius or to have a Miss World appearance. Also, genetic engineering will allow us to mix plants and animals. As computers have advanced, they have helped us remember, calculate, organize, and clarify. So it will become easier to deal with things, and much quicker. At a point in a future time, some may claim that computers become about as smart as Newton or Einstein. More advanced computers will be able to be creative, respond to feelings in a feeling way, develop intuition, recognize patterns, and suggest innovative alternatives. There is a hope if we choose to take action. We can select Internet information wisely, choose healthy computer games, limit our exposure to television commercials, and select television programs carefully.
