Unit 4 – Verbs and Nouns: Irregular and Regular Verbs, Single and Compound Nouns and Verbs, Countable and Uncountable Nouns, Singular and Plural Nouns There are 2 basic parts of speech which students must be able to identify at sight: Nouns and Verbs. (A more extensive list of parts of speech will be studied in another chapter. Nouns can contain verbs but verbs cannot contain nouns. Everything anyone says or writes is either part of a noun or part of a verb or both. 2.1 – Nouns: Nouns refer to objects, concepts, people, places and things in general. Nouns can be single words, compound nouns or entire phrases. The two most important types of noun are the SUBJECT and the OBJECT. The SUBJECT comes first in natural sentence structure in English, then the verb, and last the OBJECT (or OBJECTS). Nouns can be singular or plural when countable. Nouns can also be uncountable. All students should understand and practice identifying parts of speech, first the subject and verb, then the objects. 2.2 – Verbs: Verbs refer to actions or existence. They can also be Auxiliary Verbs. Aside from Auxiliary Verbs (always Irregular), all verbs are either Regular or Irregular. Regular verbs end with “ed” in both Past and Past Participle. Irregular verbs end in many different ways and must be memorized. All students must memorize the irregular verbs list if they wish to have a normal conversation with anyone. Examples: (subjects are purple, verbs are underlined, adverbs are normal and objects are yellow) She is a great person to work with! The new project looks very good.
