Com a entrada dos Estados Unidos na guerra, as Forças Armadas sentiram a necessidade de produzir falantes fluentes em várias línguas em decorrência da necessidade de comunicação entre as tropas de países aliados. Em 1941, foram convocados linguistas, entre eles Leonard Bloomfield, para projetar um método de ensino de línguas intensivo e eficaz.
