Think of Brazil and what comes to mind? It could be the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, the mighty Amazon River and the rainforest or the matchless skill of great Brazilian football players such as PeIé and Ronaldo.
Brazil lies in the Southern Hemisphere and is the largest country in South America. Its area covers 47 per cent of South America and 21 per cent of the Americas. It is hardly surprising that a country of Brazil’s vast size should have a varied landscape. What is remarkable is the extent of the country’s diverse plant and animal life. Brazil has one of the richest ecologies of any country in the world.
Unlike most of Latin America, Brazil was colonized not by the Spanish but by the Portuguese. Because of this, Brazilians speak Portuguese, not Spanish. Brazil’s history, too, has often been quite different from that of the rest of Latin America. Many Brazilians are descended from European and
African stock and are called mestiços (mixed race).
Brazil contains many of Latin America’s largest cities. Yet, in the heart of the Amazon rainforest live native South American tribes who have had little or no contact with the outside world. It is the juxtaposition of such extreme opposites that makes Brazil so exciting. However, extremes also blight Brazil. It has the largest disparity in wealth distribution of any country in the world.

É surpreendente que um país de grande dimensão do Brasil deve ter uma paisagem variada. O que é notável é a extensão da planta diversificada do país e da vida animal. O Brasil possui uma das mais ricas ecologias de qualquer país do mundo.
Ao contrário da maioria da América Latina, o Brasil não foi colonizado pelos espanhóis, mas pelo Português. Devido a isso, os brasileiros falam Português, não espanhol. A história do Brasil, também, tem sido muitas vezes bastante diferente daquela do resto da América Latina. Muitos brasileiros são descendentes de europeus e Estoque africano e são chamados de mestiços (pardos).
Brasil contém muitas das maiores cidades da América Latina. No entanto, no coração da floresta amazônica vivem tribos nativas da América do Sul que tiveram pouco ou nenhum contato com o mundo exterior. É a justaposição de tais extremos opostos que torna o Brasil tão emocionante. No entanto, os extremos também praga Brasil.
