Boa noite! (Chegada) Good Night! Boa noite! (Despedida) 34 CURIOSITY: HOW OLD ARE YOU? How old are you? E a resposta para essa pergunta é: I’m (I am) 20 years old. I’m (I am) 20. 35 Referências IBBOTSON, Mark; STEPHENS Bryan. Business Start-Up 1: Teacher's Book. 4th print. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2009. HUDSON, Jane; WALTER, Catherine. Exemplo: What are they doing? 67 Para usar esse tempo verbal, é muito simples: basta colocar o verb to be correspondente (am, is ou are) ao pronome pessoal (I, You, He, She, It, You, We, They) e acrescentar -ing ao final do verbo principal. Então, temos: verb to be (conjugated: am, is, are) + verb + –ing. They are studying for the test now. They Eles English. ingle s. are esta o learning aprendendo 68 Affirmative Form - Present Continuous I am verb + -ing You are verb + -ing He/ She/ It is verb + -ing We are verb + -ing You are verb + -ing They are verb + -ing Who is smiling? No, I am not (smiling...) Are You writing the letter? Yes, I am (writing...) Is He/ She/ It working at the bar? Yes, She is (working...) Are We waiting for the train? Yes, We are (waiting...) Are You studying for the test? No, We aren’t (studying...) Are They cutting carrots? Yes, They are (cutting...) Exemplo: to go (ir) – going (indo) 2. Exemplos: to write (escrever) – writing to ride (andar de/montar) – riding 71 to take (pegar, tomar de) – taking to make (fazer) – making 3. Se o verbo no infinitivo terminar em “e”, precedida de vogal -ie, troca-se o –ie por –y e acrescenta-se –ing. Exemplos: to die (morrer) – dying to lie (mentir) – lying 4. Exemplos: to swim (nadar) – swimming to cut (cortar) – cutting to run(correr) – running to sit (sentar) – sitting Observação: Nos EUA, essa regra só é verdade para verbos cuja última sílaba é a tônica (a mais forte). Bons estudos! 85 READING A TEST: TECHNOLOGY I have to work with computers and phones all the time in my work, either sitting in front of a screen or living by the apps on my mobile. I think the number of voice-to-voice phone calls has gone down a lot in the last few years, but with Facebook, Twitter, and so on, I feel sort of chained to technology the entire length of the working week. So when the weekend comes – and I’m afraid for me that’s Saturday morning, not Friday night – there’s nothing I like better than switching off the computer, the mobile and the landline and enjoying real peace and quiet. We live near to some fields and open country, and I can listen to the birds sing, go for long walks, maybe drop in at our local pub and have a drink with some of the locals. It’s not exciting, I grant you, but it’s very relaxing and helps me remember I’m a human being, not a part of some computerised machine. Of course, by Sunday night I’m already thinking about the working week ahead, but never mind. I’ve had those two days to recharge my batteries, as they say.
