Oklahoma Junior High School science teacher Dennis Fritz never thought he would be convicted of raping
and murdering his neighbor, 21-year-old Debra Sue Carter. He had no criminal record, except for driving
offenses. Was that really all it took to send a man away for life? “When the jury came back with a guilty verdict,
I almost went into shock,” says Fritz.
His conviction separated Fritz from his 13-year-old daughter Elizabeth, whom he was raising as a single
father. His co-defendant, Ron Williamson, landed on death row and came within days of being executed. Years
later, Williamson’s conviction was reversed.
Before retrying him, prosecutors decided to do a DNA test of semen and hair found at the crime scene and
compare them with Williamson’s. Fritz’s lawyers asked them to test Fritz too. Result? The DNA excluded
both men and implicated someone else who had never been charged with the crime. Last April, after 12 years
behind bars, Fritz and Williamson were freed.

A LOVE STORY
Monday, April 23rd, 2007
This 80-year-old woman was arrested for
shoplifting. When she went before the judge in
Cincinnati he asked her, “What did you steal?” She
replied, “A can of peaches.”
The judge then asked her why she had stolen
the can of peaches and she replied that she was
hungry. The judge then asked her how many
peaches were in the can. She replied 6.
The judge then said, “I will then give you 6
days in jail.”
Before the judge could actually pronounce
the punishment, the woman’s husband spoke up
and asked the judge if he could say something.
The judge said, “What is it?”
The husband said, “She also stole a can of peas.”

POLIO SUFFERER WINS $22.5 MILLION
LAWSUIT
A man from Staten Island, New York has won a
lawsuit after he contracted polio 30 years ago from his
daughter’s oral vaccination.
Dominick Tenuto, 61, won $22.5 million from
Lederle Laboratories who manufactured “Orimune”, a
polio vaccine that was given to Tenuto’s 5-month-old
daughter, Diana, in May 1979.
The following month, Tenuto, who was a supervisor
for a Wall Street securities firm, contracted polio
and lost the use of his legs. He claimed that the
vaccine, which contained a live virus, passed through
his daughter’s body and she excreted it. As a result, he
is now in a wheelchair.
After the ruling, Tenuto said: “I’ve got some measure
of relief that the truth finally was told in an open court
of law.” He said of the money that, “it doesn’t change
the way I live my life. It’s still going to be hard.”
Tenuto had also tried to sue the state of the late
paediatrician Dr. Leroy Schwartz, but only Lederle
was held liable. Lederle is planning to appeal.
http://www.qi.com/news, September, 2009.
07.12. The reason for Dominick Tenuto to sue Lederle
Laboratories was:
a) His daughter got polio after vaccination.
b) He got polio from a vaccine the lab manufactured.
c) He already had polio and after the vaccine his daughter
contracted it.
6 Semiextensivo

said: “I’ve got some measure of relief that the truth finally
was told in an open court of law.” He said of the money that,
“it doesn’t change the way I live my life.
It’s still going to be hard. ...” means:
a) Tenuto´s life will improve after he receives the money.
b) The fact that the truth came out in an open court does
not pay for the hard life he has been living due to his
physical conditions.
c) The ruling results will not change his life at all.
d) The result of the ruling has made Tenuto feel better, but
his life is still going to be difficult.
e) Tenuto believes the results will change the lives of other
people with the same problems.
07.14. “On October 26, 2005, a court heard how Nicolas J.
Burton, the 32 year-old son of a famous moviestar, killed an

(UFPR) –
A blind Sacramento man has filed a lawsuit
accusing a cab company of discriminating
against him and his guide dog.
Musician James Malone called for a ride with California
Co-op Cab last month. He says he’s been using the
company for years without any problems, but this
time it was different. “When the cab finally showed
up, the driver identified herself and said ‘Oh well you
got a dog, I can’t take you’,” said Malone. A California
Co-op spokesman contends the cabbie had the right
to refuse because she “has a note from her doctor
saying she’s allergic to dogs.” Malone says that’s not
good enough. Experts say a judge must decide who has
the most rights under the Americans with Disabilities
Act – the blind person or the allergic cabbie. A similar
case before the U.S. Supreme Court was decided in
favor of the blind person.

Bad Medicine
GOING TO THE doctor isn’t as safe as you might
think. Medical mistakes kill between 4,0 and
98,0 people in the United States annually, reports
the Institute of Medicine – a private agency that
advises the government and industry. The problem
isn’t the cold you might catch in the waiting room,
but blunders like improper testing, incorrect
diagnoses, and medicine mix-ups.
In an effort to reduce the number of errors, Web
Information Transfer Systems, an Internet start-up
company based in Phoenix, has set up a Web site
(w.webinfotrans.com) that allows physicians to
check medications prescribed by other doctors,
prescribe medications electronically to eliminate
errors in deciphering handwriting, and check an
online version of the Physician’s Desk Reference
for adverse drug interactions. Subscribers can

(UFPR) –
Virtue is its own reward
The first time Charles Campbell gave blood, it saved
his mother’s life. Since then, countless strangers have
been helped by his regular donations. Now he may
be the latest beneficiary. Campbell had a heart attack
in January. Doctors told him his frequent blood
donations over the past 31 years caused his blood to
become thin enough to leak through his dangerously
clogged arteries and save him. “they can’t prove it
without more studies, but I’m sure that’s what pulled me
through”, Campbell told The Dallas Morning News.
Campbell’s given 152 pints – 19 gallons – of blood
in 31 years. “Giving blood doesn’t hurt, I have hurt
myself worse shaving,” Campbell said.

HEART ATTACK, STROKE AND CARDIAC
ARREST WARNING SIGNS Dial 9-1-1 Fast
Heart attack and stroke are life-and-death emergencies.
Every second counts. If you see or have any of the
listed symptoms, immediately call 9-1-1. Not all
these signs occur in every heart attack or stroke.
Sometimes they go away and return. If some occur,
get help fast! Today heart attack and stroke victims
can benefit from new medications and treatments
unavailable to patients in years past. For example,
clot-busting drugs can stop some heart attacks and
strokes in progress, reducing disability and saving
lives. But to be effective, these drugs must be given
relatively quickly after heart attack or stroke symptoms
first appear. So again, don’t delay – get help right
away!
Statistics
Coronary heart disease is America’s No. 1 killer. Stroke
is No. 3 and a leading cause of serious disability. That’s
why it’s so important to reduce your risk factors, know
the warning signs, and know how to respond quickly
and properly if warning signs occur.
Heart Attack Warning Signs
Some heart attacks are sudden and intense – the
“movie heart attack,” where no one doubts what’s
happening. But most heart attacks start slowly, with
mild pain or discomfort. Often people affected aren’t
sure what’s wrong and wait too long before getting
help. Here are signs that can mean a heart attack is
happening:
• Chest discomfort. Most heart attacks involve
discomfort in the center of the chest that lasts more
than a few minutes, or that goes away and comes
back. It can feel like uncomfortable pressure,
squeezing, fullness or pain.
• Discomfort in other areas of the upper body.
Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in one
or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach.
• Shortness of breath. May occur with or without
chest discomfort.
• Other signs: These may include breaking out in a
cold sweat, nausea or light headed.
As with men, women’s most common heart attack
symptom is chest pain or discomfort. But women
are somewhat more likely than men to experience
some of the other common symptoms, particularly
shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or
jaw pain. If you or someone you’re with has chest
discomfort, especially with one or more of the other
signs, don’t wait longer than a few minutes (no more
than 5) before calling for help. Call 9-1-1... Get to a
hospital right away.
