They then identify the correct answer, before looking at a sample task. Time required: 25 minutes Materials required: Student’s Worksheets 1 and 2 (1 copy per group of worksheet 1,cut up) Sample Task Aims: to familiarise students with Part 2 Key Reading & Writing to raise awareness of parts of speech to focus on distractors and the reasons for them not fitting in a gap Procedure 1. Put the students into small groups of 4 or 5 students and give each group a set of the cut -up words from student’s worksheet 1. Also give them a blank sheet of A4 paper. Tell them to draw 3 columns on the sheet and head each column with: noun, verb or adjective. 2. Explain that the words are different parts of speech. Ask them to identify whether the words are nouns, verbs, adjectives or adverbs and place them in the appropriate column. 3. Students should then look at the sentences on the student’s worksheet 2 and decide which part of speech is needed. They should write the number of the sentence at the top of each column – just under the heading. This focus on grammar, context and meaning is a useful strategy for Part 2 because it helps candidates to focus on the sentence as a whole. 4. Check that students have placed the words in the appropriate column and have identified the correct part of speech for each sentence (see key). 5. Explain that the cut-up words are not the correct answers for each sentence. The cut-up words have a similar meaning to the correct answers but they are ‘distractors’, i.e. wrong answers which are close to the correct answer but not correct. In each three-option multiple choice question in the Key Reading & Writing test (Part 2, Part 3, some Part 4 tasks and Part 5), there are two distractors. It is useful for candidates to gain practise in identifying and ruling out incorrect options as this helps them to confirm which is the correct answer. http://www.cambridgeenglish.org/footer/terms-and-conditions/ © UCLES 2008. Ask students to think about why the cut-up words do not fit in the 6 sentences. Tell them to consider the meaning of the words and the way they are used in a sentence. For example, although ‘excellent’ and ‘favourite’ are adjectives they would not replace ‘popular’ in the sentence: ‘The internet café quickly became popular with Ivan and his friends.’ It may help to give students example sentences in which the distractors would occur: Ivan thought it was an excellent internet cafe.’ ‘The internet café was Ivan’s favourite place to meet his friends’ and compare the way the adjectives are used. 7. In pairs, students now decide what word would fill each gap correctly. Don’t check any answers yet, but monitor to help them think about the words they’re choosing. Point out that it can be useful to try to complete the gaps before you look at the options in the exam. 8. Write the correct words on the board. The words are mixed up and the students need to decide which sentence they go in. meets useful takes kinds opened popular 9. Check students’ answers and then ask them to compare the answers they gave for step 7. 10. Point out that the sentences you’ve been working on have all been on one topic: an internet café. Give out the sample task to show how the task looks in the exam. Elicit that the topic is given in the instructions (Read the sentences about an internet café.) and in the example sentence (Last month an internet café opened near Ivan’s house.). Discuss whether students think it’s better to do the questions one at a time, or to read the whole text once before they begin. There’s no correct answer, but it’s probably better to read the text first to get a general understanding and to start to think about possible answers. http://www.cambridgeenglish.org/footer/terms-and-conditions/ © UCLES 2008.
