Bom estudo! Questão 01 (EFOMM 2015) Choose the correct alternative. a) He explained it all carefully, but I was not the wiser. b) My grandmother can run twice faster than you. c) I spent more money than it was sensible yesterday. d) There were more people at the meeting than we had expected them. e) She was the first woman to climb that mountain solo. RESOLUÇÃO JUSTIFICADA A A expressão “be none (or not any) the wiser” significa “know no more than before” (Exemplo: “I’ve read the instructions, but I’m still none the wiser” (“Eu li as instruções, mas continuei ainda sem entender”). Portanto, a alternativa correta seria “He explained it all carefully, but I was none the wiser” (e não “but I was not the wiser”), cuja tradução livre seria “Ele explicou tudo cuidadosamente, mas eu continuei sem entender”. B É possível usar a estrutura “three/four/five/etc + comparative” (Exemplo: “She can walk three times faster than you”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “My grandmother can run twice as fast as you” e não “twice faster”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “I spent more money than was sensible yesterday” e não “than it was sensible yesterday”. Nesse caso, “than” substitui o pronome pessoal subjetivo “it”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “There were more people at the meeting than we had expected” e não “than we had expected them”. Nesse caso, “than” substitui o pronome pessoal objetivo “them”. Portanto, é possível dizer dizer “She was the first woman to climb that mountain solo” (usando o infinitivo) ou “She was the first woman who climbed that mountain solo” (usando uma oração relativa). Questão 02 (EFOMM 2015) Which sentence is correct? a) The news today are very bad. b) The aircraft are being refuelled. c) The staff is on strike. d) Too many mathematics are usually taught in schools. e) He picked up the dice and threw them again. Portanto, a forma correta seria “The news today is very bad” e não “The news today are very bad”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “The staff are on strike” e não “The staff is on strike”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Too much mathematics is usually taught in schools”. Compare: “Statistics is useful in language testing”, mas “The unemployments statistics are disturbing”. E A expressão “roll the dice” (“rolar os dados”) é idiomática e deveria ter sido utilizada no lugar de “throw the dice”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “He picked up the dice and rolled them again”. Questão 03 (EFOMM 2015) Which sentence IS NOT correct? a) She went and got him from the station. b) I am going to try and eat something. c) Be sure and ask Uncle Sam about the vegetables. d) She tried and ate something, but she couldn’t manage. e) Hurry up and open the door. O significado exato depende do objeto. Compare: 1) “I got a letter from Lucy this morning”. (= “receive”) 2) “Can you come and get me from the station when I arrive?” (= “fetch”) 3) “If I listen to loud music, I get a headache”. (= “obtain”) 4) “If you get a number 6 bus, it stops right outside our house”. (= “catch”). B ✓ A sentença está correta. Frequentemente, usamos o “and” no lugar do “to” (mantendo a mesma ideia) após “try” ou “be sure”. Este uso é informal (Exemplo: “I’ll try and phone you tomorrow morning”). Portanto, outra forma de reescrever a sentença contida na questão seria “I am going to try to eat something”. C ✓ A sentença está correta. Frequentemente, usamos o “and” no lugar do “to” (mantendo a mesma ideia) após “try” ou “be sure”. Este uso é informal (Exemplo: “I’ll try and phone you tomorrow morning”). Portanto, outra forma de reescrever a sentença contida na questão seria “Be sure to ask Uncle Sam about the vegetables”. D O uso do “and” no lugar do “to” só é possível com a forma basal do verbo. Portanto, a forma correta seria “She tried to eat something, but she couldn’t manage” e não “She tried and ate something”. E ✓ A sentença está correta. As expressões “Come and...”, “Go and…”, “Run and…”, “Hurry up and…”, “Stay and…” são usadas informalmente. (Exemplos: “Come and have a drink”, “Stay and have dinner”, “Hurry up and open the door”.) He often comes and spends the evening with us”, “She stayed and played with the children”). EFOMM – RESOLUÇÕES JUSTIFICADAS Professor Daniel Nícolas 2 Questão 04 (EFOMM 2015) Which sentence is grammatically correct? a) I think I would enjoy a city life. b) You’ve made a very good progress. c) We are having a terrible weather. d) A child needs plenty of love. e) What a nonsense! (“Life is complicated”, “Ann enjoys life”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “I think I would enjoy city life” (e não “a city life”), pois não usamos artigo indefinido antes de substantivo incontável. Entretanto, se estivermos descrevendo as vidas de pessoas em particular, o mesmo substantivotorna-se contável (“My grandmother had a hard life”, “My mother’s parentes lived interesting lives”). B O substantivo “progress” é incontável e não aceita artigo indefinido antes dele. Portanto, a forma correta seria “You’ve made very good progress”. C O substantivo “weather” (“clima”) é incontável e não aceita artigo indefinido. Portanto, a forma correta seria “We are having terrible weather” (e não “a terrible weather”). There’s plenty of time”) quanto contáveis (“Plenty of shops take cheques”). E A construção exclamativa “what + a/an + (adjective) + singular countable noun” (Exemplo: “What a rude man!” ou “What a surprise!” não pode ser utilizada com a palavra “nonsense” por se tratar de um substantivo incontável. Questão 05 (EFOMM 2016) Choose the correct sentence. a) My best friend is as smart as me. b) Nobody but I knew the end of the story. c) Do you want Paul or I to phone her? d) I poured her a glass of water, she drank at once. e) He was admired by the people with who he worked. RESOLUÇÃO JUSTIFICADA A ✓ A sentença está correta. Informalmente, nós podemos usar pronomes objetivos (“me”, “him”, etc) após a partícula “as” (Exemplo: “She doesn’t sing as well as me”). Contudo, em uma linguagem formal, daremos preferência à construção “subject + verb” após o “as” (Exemplo: “She doesn’t sing as well as I do”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “Nobody but me knew the end of the story” (e não “Nobody but I”). C O verbo “want” atrai a estrutura “object + infinitive” (Exemplo: “Do you want me to make some coffee?”). Sendo assim, a forma correta seria “Do you want Paul or me to phone her?” e não “Do you want Paul or I to phone her?”. D Não podemos omitir pronomes pessoais, mesmo que o significado esteja claro sem eles (Exemplo: “She loved the picture because it reminded her of home” e não “because reminded her of home”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “I poured her a glass of water, she drank it at once”. E Os pronomes relativos “who” e “that” não podem ser utilizados após preposições. Portanto, a forma correta seria “He was admired by the people with whom he worked” e não “He was admired by the people with who he worked”. Questão 06 (EFOMM 2016) Mark the correct alternative. a) She does probably not know. b) I won't probably be there. c) I didn't judge fair. d) He laughed silly. e) The accused was charged with the crime today. RESOLUÇÃO JUSTIFICADA A Quando advérbios precedem a partícula “not”, eles podem vir antes do verbo auxiliar (Exemplo: “I probably will not be there”) ou entre o verbo auxiliar e o verbo principal (Exemplo: “I will probably not be there”). Entretanto, se o verbo auxiliar for o “do” ou o “does”, o advérbio sempre virá antes. Portanto, a forma correta seria “She probably does not know” e não “She does probably not know”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “I probably won’t be there” e não “I won't probably be there”. (Exemplo: “to play fair”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “I didn't judge fairly” e não “I didn't judge fair”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “He gave a silly laugh” e não “He laughed silly”. Questão 07 (EFOMM 2016) Which alternative is correct? a) Sam, would you come here please - Ok, I´m going! b) These shoes don't suit me - do you have a larger size? c) You are a very naughty little girl. d) You really need to do an effort! e) I borrowed my father some money and now I can't pay it back. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Sam, would you come here please - Ok, I´m coming!” e não “I´m going!” (“When your clothes fit you, they are neither too tight nor too loose for you”). “Suit” faz referência ao estilo, cor, etc. (“If something suits you, it is convenient or appropriate for you”). Compare: a) “This hat doesn’t fit me”. (= It is either big or small for me.) b) “This hat doesn’t suit me”. (= This hat isn’t appropriate for my sense of style.) Portanto, a forma correta seria, “These shoes don't fit me - do you have a larger size?” e não “These shoes don't suit me”. São elas: 1) DO: “do good”, “do harm”, “do one’s best”, “do a favour”, “do sport”, “do exercise”, “do one’s hair”, “do one’s teeth”, “do one’s duty”. 2) MAKE: “make a journey”, “make an offer”, “make arrangements”, “make a suggestion”, “make a decision”, “make an attempt”, “make an effort”, “make an excuse”, “make an exception”, “make a mistake”, “make a noise”, “make a phone call”, “make money”, “make a profit”, “make a fortune”, “make EFOMM – RESOLUÇÕES JUSTIFICADAS Professor Daniel Nícolas 3 love”, “make peace”, “make war”, “make a bed”, “make a fire”, “make progress”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “You really need to make na effort!” e não “to do an effort!”. E Quando usamos o verbo “to borrow” (pegar emprestado), precisamos lembrar que alguém “borrow something from someone”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “I borrowed some money from my father” e não “I borrowed my father some money”. Questão 08 (EFOMM 2016) Choose the correct option. a) I wish the children had a garden which to play in. b) Susan has written a book of which I've forgotten the name. c) It is I who is responsible for the planning. d) This is the woman that Bob said that could show you the office. e) The man for who I work is very sick. RESOLUÇÃO JUSTIFICADA A Pronomes relativos podem ser utilizados com estruturas contendo preposições (Exemplo: “We moved to the country so that the children would have a garden in which to play” ou “He was miserable unless he had neighbours with whom to quarrel”. Entretanto, esta estrutura é formal, sendo mais comum usar a estrutura “infinitive + preposition” (Exemplo: “We moved to the country so that the children would have a garden to play in (e não “which to play in”) ou “He was miserable unless he had neighbours to quarrel with” (e não “whom to quarrel with”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “I wish the children had a garden in which to play” ou “I wish the children had a garden to play in” e não “I wish the children had a garden which to play in”. B ✓ A sentença está correta. No lugar do pronome relativo “whose” para expressar posse, podemos utilizar a construção “of which” ou “that...of”para fazer referências a objetos. A ordem mais comum nesses casos é “noun + of which” ou “that...of”, sendo possível também “of which...+ noun”. Compare as quatro formas de expressar a mesma ideia: a) “He’s written a book whose name I’ve forgotten”. b) “He’s written a book the name of which I’ve forgotten”. c) “He’s written a book that I’ve forgotten the name of”. d) “He’s written a book of which I’ve forgotten the name”. Compare: a) “It is who am is responsible”. (formal) b) “It’s me that’s / who’s responsible”. (informal) Para evitar ser formal ou informal demais, poderíamos dizer: c) “I’m the person / the one who is responsible”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “It is I who am responsible for the planning” e não “It is I who is responsible for the planning”. D É possível combinar orações relativas com estruturas formadas por “Subject + know / said / feel / hope / wish (that)”. Tais construções ficarão posicionadas após o pronome relativo (Exemplo, “We’re going to meet somebody (who/that) I know (that) you’ll like”). Observe que a conjunção (o segundo “that”) é normalmente omitida nesta estrutura. Portanto, a forma correta seria “This is the woman that Bob said could show you the office” e não “This is the woman that Bob said that could show you the office”. E Os pronomes relativos “who” e “that” não podem ser utilizados após preposições. Portanto, a forma correta seria “The man for whom I work is very sick” e não “The man for who I work is very sick”. Questão 09 (EFOMM 2016) Choose the correct answer. a) This cheese tastes well. b) Susan pulled her belt tightly and started off. c) Can you suggest me a good dentist? d) The forecast says it will grow colder tomorrow. e) Who did you buy it? RESOLUÇÃO JUSTIFICADA A Após verbos de ligação (“be”, “seem”, “appear”, “look”, “sound”, “smell”, “taste”, “feel”, “become”, “get”), usamos adjetivos e não advérbios. Compare: a) “He spoke intelligently”. (“seem” é um verbo de ligação) Portanto, a forma correta seria “This cheese tastes good” e não “This cheese tastes well”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Susan pulled her belt tight and started off” e não “Susan pulled her belt tightly and started off”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Can you suggest a good dentist to me?” e não “Can you suggest me a good dentist?”. (Exemplo: “As the weather grows colder, my thoughts turn to holidays in the sun”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “Who bought it?” e não “Who did you buy it?”. Questão 10 (EFOMM 2016) Choose the correct alternative. a) Anna is the more intelligent girl in this room. b) He plays best than his brother. c) The commonest reason given for absence from school is flu. d) Would you please talk quietlier? e) Richard is the nicer of the three brothers. Sendo assim, a forma correta seria “Anna is the most intelligent girl in this room” e não “Anna is the more intelligent girl in this room”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “He plays better than his brother” e não “He plays best than his brother”. Portanto, além da sentença redigida na alternativa correta, também seria possível dizer “The most common reason given for absence from school is flu”. D A maioria dos advérbios nos graus comparativo e superlativo são precedidos pelas partículas “more” e “most”, respectivamente. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Would you please talk more quietly” (e não “Would you please talk EFOMM – RESOLUÇÕES JUSTIFICADAS Professor Daniel Nícolas 4 quietlier?”) Sendo assim, a forma correta seria “Richard is the nicest of the three brothers” e não “Richard is the nicer of the three brothers”). Questão 11 (EFOMM 2016) Choose the correct alternative. a) She is a young fat lady. b) It’s a new black Italian handbag. c) It’s an American modern little house. d) It’s a white old lovely dog. e) It’s a philosophical old discussion. Portanto, a forma correta seria “She is a fat young lady” e não “She is a young fat lady”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “It’s a little modern American house” e não “It’s an American modern little house”. Note a utilização do artigo indefinido “a” no lugar de “an”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “It’s a lovely old white dog” e não “It’s a white old lovely dog”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “It’s an old philosophical discussion” e não “It’s a philosophical old discussion”. Note a utilização do artigo indefinido “an” no lugar de “a”. Questão 12 (EFOMM 2017) All the sentences below are correct, EXCEPT: a) Carefully, she laid the papers on the table and left the room. b) These children are very badly brought up. They are always shouting and fighting each other. c) We looked at lots of different makes of car but, in the end it was a question of price. d) The train is my favorite way of transport. e) The road out of our village goes up a steep hill. A expressão “in the end” pode significar, entre outras coisas, “after we have considered everything”. D A expressão “way of” não é, normalmente, usada antes de um substantivo (exceto na expressão “way of life”). Antes de um substantivo, usaremos “means of” (Exemplo: “The 19th century saw a revolution in means of transport”) ou “methods of” (Exemplo: “They tried all methods of instruction, but the child learnt nothing”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “The train is my favorite means of transport” e não “The train is my favorite way of transport”. E ✓ A sentença está correta. A expressão “out of” pode significar o mesmo que “through” em determinados contextos. Questão 13 (EFOMM 2017) Mark the correct alternative. a) The repairs are certain of costing more than you think. b) We didn’t reach agreement on any of the discussed problems. c) Children may resemble both their father and their mother in different ways. d) It is not expected to have difficulty in finding somebody suitably qualified. e) Her family are easy to get on with them. RESOLUÇÃO JUSTIFICADA A As expressões “certain of” e “sure of” acompanhadas de “ing” são usadas para fazer referência aos sentimentos das pessoas sobre as quais estamos falando (“Before the game she felt certain of winning, but after a few minutes she realised it wasn’t going to be so easy”). Porém, as expressões “certain of” e “sure of” acompanhadas de “infinitive” fazem referência aos próprios sentimentos dos falante ou de quem escreve. Sendo assim, a forma correta seria “The repairs are certain to cost more than you think” e não “The repairs are certain of costing more than you think”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “We didn’t reach an agreement on any of the discussed problems” e não “We didn’t reach agreement on any of the discussed problems”. Portanto, a forma “Children may resemble both their father and their mother in different ways” está correta, não podendo ser utilizada a construção “resemble to”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “It is not expected to have difficulty in finding anybody suitably qualified”. Os exemplos mais comuns são: “easy”, “hard”, “difficult”, “impossible”, “good” e “ready” (Exemplo: “He’s easy to please” = “To please him is easy” = “It is easy to please him”). She’s nice to talk to”). Entretanto, não haverá pronome objetivo após o verbo ou após a preposição nestes casos (“She’s nice to talk to her”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “Her family are easy to get on with” e não “Her family are easy to get on with them”. Questão 14 (EFOMM 2016) Choose the correct option. a) The bad weather prevented me to go. b) I object to be treated like this. c) Would you mind to open the door? d) I meant to have called you, but I forgot. e) You should avoid to make mistakes. RESOLUÇÃO JUSTIFICADA A O verbo “prevent” deve ser seguido pela estrutura “object + from + ing form”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “The bad weather prevented me from going” e não “The bad weather prevented me to go”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “I object to being treated like this” e não “I object to be treated like this”. Portanto, a forma correta seria EFOMM – RESOLUÇÕES JUSTIFICADAS Professor Daniel Nícolas 5 “Would you mind opening the door?” e não “Would you mind to open the door?”. D ✓ A sentença está correta. Após certos verbos (“mean”, “be”, “would like”), o infinitivo perfeito (“to have done”, “to have left”, etc) podem fazer referência a situações passadas irreais que são opostas ao que realmente aconteceu. Portanto, a forma correta seria “You should avoid making mistakes” e não “You should avoid to make mistakes”. Questão 15 (EFOMM 2017) Choose the correct option. a) Dominoes is not played by many younger people these days. b) Where have you left your luggages? c) I found many informations about this city. d) Our rubbishes get collected on Thursdays. e) I can’t stand doing all these houseworks. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Where have you left your luggage?” e não “Where have you left your luggages?”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “I found much information about this city” e não “I found many informations about this city”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Our rubbish gets collected on Thursdays” e não “Our rubbishes get collected on Thursdays”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “I can’t stand doing all this housework” e não “I can’t stand doing all these houseworks”. Questão 16 (EFOMM 2017) Choose the correct option. a) He always changes his thoughts. b) He walked out after a blazing row with his friend. c) I love his books, but in person he is a crashing nuisance. d) He is a devoted smoker. e) She might have a golden chance of passing the exam. Portanto, a forma correta seria “He always changes his mind” e não “He always changes his thoughts”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “I love his books, but in person he is a crashing bore” e não “I love his books, but in personhe is a crashing nuisance”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “He is a heavy smoker” e não “He is a devoted smoker”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “She might have a golden opportunity of passing the exam” e não “She might have a golden chance of passing the exam”. Questão 17 (EFOMM 2017) Choose the correct option a) She was very ingenuous to believe that her boss would listen to her suggestions. b) He pretends to buy a new car soon. c) Put both vegetables into a recipient and crush with a potato masher. d) Beat the eggs and sugar until they start to engross. e) My family and my job both play an important part in my life, fulfilling separate but complimentary needs. Portanto, a forma correta seria “He intends to buy a new car soon” e não “He pretends to buy a new car soon”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Put both vegetables into a container and crush with a potato masher” e não “Put both vegetables into a recipient and crush with a potato masher”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Beat the eggs and sugar until they start to thicken” e não “Beat the eggs and sugar until they start to engross”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “My family and my job both play an important part in my life, fulfilling separate but complementary needs” e não “My family and my job both play an important part in my life, fulfilling separate but complimentary needs”. Questão 18 (EFOMM 2018) Mark the correct alternative. a) You have made me be a happy man. b) I don't know enough of French to read this. c) I got a grandmother last month. d) She spoke very fast that nobody could understand. e) He's from Austin, as you can tell from his accent. (Exemplo: “The rain made the wet grass”). Porém, não faremos uso de “make…be” dentro dessa estrutura. Portanto, a forma correta seria “You have made me a happy man” e não “You have made me be a happy man”. B Usaremos “enough” antes de adjetivos e substantivos (Exemplo: “You didn’t buy enough cards”). (Exemplo: “You didn’t buy enough of them”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “I don't know enough EFOMM – RESOLUÇÕES JUSTIFICADAS Professor Daniel Nícolas 6 French to read this” e não “I don't know enough of French to read this”. C Os verbos “become”, “get”, “go”, “come”, “grow” e “turn” podem ser usados com significados semelhantes para falar sobre mudanças. As diferenças entre eles são complicadas. Dependem parcialmente da gramática, parcialmente do sentido e parcialmente do uso consolidado. O verbo “become” pode ser usado antes de adjetivos (Exemplo: “It was becoming very dark”) e sintagmas nominais (Exemplo: “What do you have to do to become a pilot?”). (Exemplo: “It was getting very dark”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “I became a grandmother last month” e não “I got a grandmother last month”. D Usaremos a partícula “so” e não “very” antes de orações iniciadas por “that”. (Exemplo: “It was so cold that we stopped playing”). Portanto a forma correta seria “She spoke so fast that nobody could understand” e não “She spoke very fast that nobody could understand”. E ✓ A sentença está correta. Os verbos “can” e “could” podem ser usados com “guess” e “tell” para significar o mesmo que “know” (Exemplos: “I could guess what she wanted” e “You can tell he’s Irish from his accent”). Questão 19 (EFOMM 2018) Choose the correct sentence. a) Pancho is always happy to offer advise if you ask him for it. b) Teachers always advice parents to emphasize studying at home. c) My doctor adviced me to go to the gym more often. d) John has a bad habit of offering unsolicited advice. e) Sarah will advice the city council that the deadline might need to be extended. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Pancho is always happy to offer advice if you ask him for it” e não “Pancho is always happy to offer advise if you ask him for it”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Teachers always advise parents to emphasize studying at home” e não “Teachers always advice parents to emphasize studying at home”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “My doctor advised me to go to the gym more often” e não “My doctor adviced me to go to the gym more often”. E Após o verbo auxiliar “will”, usaremos o verbo principal no infinitivo sem o “to”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Sarah will advise the city council that the deadline might need to be extended” e não “Sarah will advice the city council that the deadline might need to be extended”. Questão 20 (EFOMM 2018) Choose the correct sentence. a) Her breadth of knowledge is amazing. b) David has a large respect for his teacher. c) The river is 230 meters width. d) The driver's behavior caused a big annoyance. e) Some native English speakers measure their personal weigh in pounds. RESOLUÇÃO JUSTIFICADA A ✓ A sentença está correta. O substantivo “breadth” indica “amplitude” e foi usado corretamente. B Com substantivos abstratos, faremos uso do adjetivo “great”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “David has a great respect for his teacher” e não “David has a large respect for his teacher”. C Para indicar largura, usaremos o verbo “to be” seguido do adjetivo “wide”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “The river is 230 meters wide” e não “The river is 230 meters width”. D Com substantivos abstratos, faremos uso do adjetivo “great”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “The driver's behavior caused a great annoyance” e não “The driver's behavior caused a big annoyance”. E Após o adjetivo “personal”, será necessário usar o substantivo “ weight” e não o verbo “weigh”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Some native English speakers measure their personal weight in pounds” e não “Some native English speakers measure their personal weigh in pounds”. Questão 21 (EFOMM 2018) Which alternative is correct? a) He is selling a two-person tent. b) It is important to follow the postgraduatesregulations. c) I need this plier to fix the machine. d) She paid me twenty dollars, now she owes me other twenty dollars. e) I don't have some money. Portanto, a forma correta seria “It is important to follow the postgraduate regulations” e não “It is important to follow the postgraduates regulations”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “I need these pliers to fix the machine” e não “I need this plier to fix the machine”. I want to stay for another three weeks”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “She paid me twenty dollars, now she owes me another twenty dollars” e não “She paid me twenty dollars, now she owes me other twenty dollars”. E Em frases negativas, usaremos o pronome indefinido “any” e não “some”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “I don't have any money” e não “I don't have some money”. Questão 22 (EFOMM 2018) Choose the correct sentence. a) My father always kept a close eye in me when I played with my friends. b) There must be more to him than meets my eyes, or else why would she be interested in him? c) Although we are married, we don't see eye to eye on a lot of things. d) I cried my eyes away when my friend told me I failed the exam. e) Working with poor children opened my eyes off their real needs. RESOLUÇÃO JUSTIFICADA A A expressão idiomática “keep a close eye / watch on someone or something” significa “observar cuidadosamente alguém ou EFOMM – RESOLUÇÕES JUSTIFICADAS Professor Daniel Nícolas 7 alguma coisa” (Exemplo: “Over the next few months we will keep a close eye on sales”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “My father always kept a close eye on me when I played with my friends” e não “My father always kept a close eye in me when I played with my friends”. B A expressão idiomática “there's more to this than meets the eye” significa que “uma situação não é tão simples quanto parece” (Exemplo: “This whole business is very puzzling. There is a lot more to it than meets the eye”). Portanto a forma correta seria “There must be more to him than meets the eye, or else why would she be interested in him?” e não “There must be more to him than meets my eyes, or else why would she be interested in him?”. C ✓ A sentença está correta. A expressão idiomática “see eye to eye” significa “to agree with someone”, ou seja, concordar com alguém (Exemplo: “I don’t see eye to eye with my father on many things”). D A expressão idiomática correta é “cry one’s eyes out” e significa “cry very hard”, ou seja, chorar muito (Exemplo: “She cried her eyes out after his death”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “I cried my eyes out when my friend told me I failed the exam” e não “Although we are married, we don't see eye to eye on a lot of things”. E A expressão idiomática correta é “open one’s eyes” frequentemente acompanhada da partícula “to” (Exemplo: “We have to open our eyes to these problems and stop ignoring them”) e significa “to begin to notice or be aware of something important”, ou seja, “começar a notar ou ficar consciente de algo importante”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Working with poor children opened my eyes to their real needs” e não “Working with poor children opened my eyes off their real needs”. Questão 23 (EFOMM 2018) Mark the correct option. a) Many cattle are suffering from a serious disease. b) The police is looking for a dark-haired man in his twenties. c) Too many mathematics are usually taught in schools. d) Her jeans is too tight at the hips. e) Where are those five pounds I lent you? Portanto, a forma correta seria “The police are looking for a dark-haired man in his twenties” e não “The police is looking for a dark- haired man in his twenties”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Too much mathematics is usually taught in schools” e não “Too many mathematics are usually taught in schools”. Compare: “Statistics is useful in language testing”, mas “The unemployments statistics are disturbing”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Her jeans are too tight at the hips” e não “Her jeans is too tight at the hips”. (Exemplo: “Three miles is a long way to walk”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “Where is that five pounds I lent you?” e não “Where are those five pounds I lent you?”. Questão 24 (EFOMM 2018) Which alternative is correct? a) Can you translate this in Chinese? b) I broke it into half. c) Cut the onion into small pieces. d) The ball rolled slowly in the goal. e) He sat down into the armchair, and I sat down onto the floor. When ske kissed the frog, it changed into a handsome prince”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “Can you translate this into Chinese?” e não “Can you translate this in Chinese?”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “I broke it in half” e não “I broke it into half”. C ✓ A sentença está correta. O verbo “cut” pode ser seguido por “in” ou por “into”. Ele aceita as duas preposições. Portanto, a forma correta seria “The ball rolled slowly into the goal” e não “The ball rolled slowly in the goal”. E Usaremos as preposições “in” e “on” após a expressão “sit down”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “He sat down in the armchair, and I sat down on the floor” e não “He sat down into the armchair, and I sat down onto the floor”. Questão 25 (EFOMM 2018) Mark the only option which is NOT grammatically correct. a) We've all got terrible voices, but I sing worst of all. b) Thank you very much indeed. That is most kind of you. c) She's the fastest player of them all. d) We're walkingby far the slowest. e) The more it is dangerous, the more I like it. Your accent is the worst in class” / “We've all got terrible voices, but I sing worst of all”). B ✓ A sentença está correta. A palavra “most” pode ser utilizada antes de adjetivos como sinônimo de “very” em expressões de avaliação. (Exemplo: “The experience was most distressing”). (Exemplos: “I’m the happiest man in the world” e não “of the world” / “She’s the fastest player in the team” e não “of the team”). (Exemplos: “She's the fastest player of them all” / “He’s the best of the lot”). D ✓ A sentença está correta. Adjetivos no grau superlativo podem ser modificados por “much” e “by far” (Exemplos: “He’s much the most imaginative of them all” / “She’s by far the oldest”). E Podemos utilizar a construção formada por “The + comparative, the + comparative” para expressar a ideia de que duas coisas mudam ou variam juntas (Exemplo: “The colder, the the better). Se precisarmos fazer uso de um sujeito, ele deve seguir o padrão “The + comparative expression + subject + verb” (Exemplo: “The older I get, the happier I am”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “The more dangerous it is, the more I like it.” E EFOMM – RESOLUÇÕES JUSTIFICADAS Professor Daniel Nícolas 8 não “The more it is dangerous, the more I like it”. Questão 26 (EFOMM 2018) Which option is NOT correct? a) If your mother will fill in this form, I'll prepare her ticket. b) If Ann won't be here on Monday, we'd better cancel the meeting. c) If you should run into Peter, tell him he owes me a letter. d) Hadn't we missed the plane, we would all have been killed in the crash. e) If it hadn't been for your help, I don't know what I'd have done. RESOLUÇÃO JUSTIFICADA A ✓ A sentença está correta. Normalmente, usamos a partícula “if” com o “Simple Present” para falarmos do futuro (Exemplo: “If I have time, I will phone to you”). Porém, em determinadas situações, podemos usar o “if” com o “will”. Em solicitações formais, o “will” não é um verbo auxiliar, mas o equivalente a “be willing to” (estar disposto a). (Exemplo: “If you will come this way, I will show you your room”). B ✓ A sentença está correta. Outra situação na qual podemos usar o “if + will” é quando estamos dizendo algo equivalente a “if we know that” (Exemplo: “If prices will really come down in a few months, I’m not going to buy one now”). C ✓ A sentença está correta. Podemos sugerir que algo é improvável, usando “if + should”. (Exemplo: “If he should be late, we’ll have to start without him”). Nesse caso, faremos a inversão entre o sujeito e o verbo. a) “Were she my daughter…” (=”If she were my daughter…”) b) “Had I realized what you intended…” (=”If I had realized what you intended”) Porém, no caso de uma senteça negativa, não faremos a contração. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Had we not missed the plane, we would all have been killed in the crash” e não “Hadn't we missed the plane, we would all have been killed in the crash”. E ✓ A sentença está correta. A estrutura “if it were not for” para dizer o equivalente a “se não fosse por alguma coisa”. (Exemplo: “If it weren’t for his wife’s money, he would never be a director”). Se estivermos fazendo referência ao passado, usaremos a estrutura “If it hadn’t been for”. (Exemplo: “But for your help, I don’t know what I’d have done”). Questão 27 (EFOMM 2018) Which sentences are grammatically correct? I. He goes running in all weathers. II. I have difficulties in remembering faces. III. Do you think we have much chance of catching the train? IV. He speaks an excellent English. V. We've bought three groceries. a) Only I and IV b) Only I and III c) Only II and IV d) Only III and V e) Only II and V RESOLUÇÃO JUSTIFICADA I ✓ A sentença está correta. O substantivo “weather” (“clima”) é incontável. Todavia, existe uma expressão consolidada no inglês, “in all weathers”, (ou seja “em quaisquer condições climáticas) que faz uso do substantivo “weather” em sua forma plural. II Para expressar a ideia de “ter dificuldade em fazer alguma coisa”, adotaremos a construção “I have difficulty in + (ing)”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “I have difficulty in remembering faces” e não “I have difficulties in remembering faces”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “He speaks excellent English” e não “He speaks an excellent English”. Os exemplos mais comuns são: “groceries”, “customs” e “thanks” (Exemplo: “Many thanks for your help” e não “Much thank”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “We’ve bought the groceries” e não “We've bought three groceries”. Questão 28 (EFOMM 2018) Which alternative is correct? a) I visited the United Kingdom and the Brazil two years ago. b) The Bahamas is a group of islands in the West Indies. c) Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world. d) The coast of the country is bathed by Atlantic Ocean. e) My brother likes seaside, but I prefer mountains. Porém, nomes de lugares que contém palavras como “republic”, “state” e “union” aceitam o “the” (“The Republic of Ireland”, “The United States”, “The Soviet Union”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “I visited the United Kingdom and Brazil two years ago” e não “I visited the United Kingdom and the Brazil two years ago”. B ✓ A sentença está correta. Normalmente, usamos o artigo definido “the” antes de nomes de rios (“The Amazon River”), mares (“The Red Sea”), oceanos (“The Pacific Ocean”), grupos de ilhas (“The Falkland Islands”), desertos (“The Sahara”) e cadeias de montanhas (“The Himalayas”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world” e não “Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world”. D A expressão “the coast of the country” aceita o artigo definido “the” por se tratar de um substantivo tomado no sentido específico (a primeira ocorrência do “the”). Já a segunda ocorrência do “the” se dá pelo fato de que existem algumas expressões que se referem ao ambiente físico e que são familiares a todos (“the town”, “the country”, “the mountains”, “the sea”, “the seaside”, “the wind”, “the rain”, “the weather”,“the sunshine”, “the night”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “The coast of the country is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean” e não “The coast of the country is bathed by Atlantic Ocean”. E Existem algumas expressões que se referem ao ambiente físico e que são familiares a todos (“the town”, “the country”, “the mountains”, “the sea”, “the seaside”, “the wind”, “the rain”, “the weather”, “the sunshine”, “the night”) que exigem a utilização do “the”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “My brother likes the seaside, but I prefer the mountains” e não “My brother likes seaside, but I prefer mountains”. Questão 29 (EFOMM 2018) Mark the correct alternative. a) All his bags were robbed of him. b) I handed to my sister the bottle. EFOMM – RESOLUÇÕES JUSTIFICADAS Professor Daniel Nícolas 9 c) I am going to treat myself to a new dress. d) He claimed that he had been deprived from his freedom. e) Her grandmother made a lovely scarf to me. RESOLUÇÃO JUSTIFICADA A Os verbos “rob” and “steal” significam “take something from someone without permission”. O verbo “rob” enfatiza o lugar ou a pessoa da qual a coisa foi roubada (Exemplo: “Our local post office was robbed early on Tuesday morning” / “A young woman was attacked and robbed as she walked home from work last night”). Observe que quando estamos falando de uma “house”, usamos o verbo “burglar” (“The house was burgled while they were all sleeping” e não “The house was robbed”). Our car was stolen from outside our house last week”). Portanto, a forma correta seria: “All his bags were stolen from him” e não “All his bags were robbed of him”. B A sentença está correta. Quando o verbo possui dois objetos, o objeto indireto precede, normalmente, o objeto direto (Exemplo: “I gave John the keys”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “I handed my sister the bottle” e não “I handed to my sister the bottle”. D O verbo “deprive” é, normalmente, seguido da preposição “of”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “He claimed that he had been deprived of his freedom” e não “He claimed that he had been deprived from his freedom”. E Quando o verbo possui dois objetos, o objeto indireto precede, normalmente, o objeto direto (Exemplo: “I gave John the keys”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “Her grandmother made me a lovely scarf” e não “Her grandmother made a lovely scarf to me”. Questão 30 (EFOMM 2018) Mark the correct option. a) Here comes he. b) Not until he received her call did he fully understand the situation. c) "I am thirsty!" / "So I am." d) Not far from here can you find a place to eat. e) "I don't like soap operas." / "Nor I do." Portanto, a forma correta seria “Here he comes” e não “Here comes he”. B ✓ A sentença está correta. Quando a expressão “not until” for colocada no início da sentença, faremos a inversão apenas na segunda oração (e não na primeira). C Em uma “positive addition to remark”, quando iniciamos com a partícula “so”, o verbo auxiliar deve preceder o sujeito. Portanto, a forma correta seria “So am I” e não “So I am”. D A inversão não deve ser utilizada após as expressões “not far” e “not long”, pois, ambas produzem uma ideia positiva. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Not far from here you can find a place to eat” e não “Not far from here can you find a place to eat”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Nor do I” e não “Nor I do”. Questão 31 (EFOMM 2018) Choose the correct alternative. a) You'll soon get used to live abroad. b) She is talking about to move to the countryside. c) I look forward to hear from you. d) I used to playing cards when I was a kid. e) I am used to doing the dishes. RESOLUÇÃO JUSTIFICADA A A expressão “get used to” (“acostumar-se a”) é composta por uma preposição e preposições sempre atraem verbos no gerúndio (“ing”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “You'll soon get used to living abroad” e não “You'll soon get used to live abroad”. B Após preposições, o verbo sempre ficará no gerúndio (“ing”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “She is talking about moving to the countryside” e não “She is talking about to move to the countryside”. C A expressão “look foward to” (“esperar ansiosamente”) possui uma preposição no final e preposições sempre atraem verbos no gerúndio (“ing”). Portanto, a forma correta seria “I look forward to hearing from you” e não “I look forward to hear from you”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “I used to play cards when I was a kid” e não “I used to playing cards when I was a kid”. E ✓ A sentença está correta. A construção “be used to” é empregada para expressar hábitos no presente. Ela deve ser acompanhada pelo gerúndio (“ing”). Questão 32 (EFOMM 2018) Choose the correct sentence. a) I saw a girl who hair was blue. b) Mr. Smith, which has never smiled, seems very happy today. c) He got fired again, what surprised everybody. d) The girl who I gave the form to was very nervous. e) It was like a dream from that I feared I would wake sooner or later. Portanto, a forma correta seria “I saw a girl whose hair was blue” e não “I saw a girl who hair was blue”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Mr. Smith, who has never smiled, seems very happy today” e não “Mr. Smith, which has never smiled, seems very happy today”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “He got fired again, which surprised everybody” e não “He got fired again, what surprised everybody”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “It was like a dream from which I feared I would wake sooner or later” e não “It was like a dream from that I feared I would wake sooner or later”. Questão 33 (EFOMM 2018) Mark the correct alternative. a) We had better not to call him today. b) I ought to read this book, oughtn't I? c) John is eighteen, so his sister must to be twenty. d) I suggested she added this book to the list, and she finally would. EFOMM – RESOLUÇÕES JUSTIFICADAS Professor Daniel Nícolas 10 e) Last year I lived with my boyfriend but I knew I can live with my parents again at any time. RESOLUÇÃO JUSTIFICADA A Após a construção“had better”, usamos o infinitivo sem o “to”. Na forma negativa, a mesma construção passa a ter a seguinte estrutura “had better not + infinitive”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “We had better not call him” e não “We had better not to call him”. B ✓ A sentença está correta. A partícula “to” da expressão “ought to” não será usada em uma “tag question” (Exemplo: “We ought to Wake Helen, oughtn’t we?”). C Após o verbo modal “must”, devemos empregar o infinitivo sem o “to” dos verbos que o acompanham. Portanto, a forma correta seria “John is eighteen, so his sister must be twenty” e não “John is eighteen, so his sister must to be twenty”. D Quando trabalhamos com o verbo “suggest” seguido por uma “that clause” (ou seja, “I suggest that” ou ainda “I suggested that”), várias formas verbais são possíveis. Compare: a) “He suggested (that) she gets a job in a bank”. (Present) b) “He suggested (that) she got a job in a bank”. (Past) c) “He suggested (that) she should get a job in a bank”. (Modal) d) “He suggested (that) she get a job in a bank”. (Subjunctive) Ocorre que, para manter o paralelismo do tempo verbal empregado na oração “I suggested she added this book to the list”, o examinador deveria ter feito uso do auxiliar “did” e não do “would”. Portanto, a forma correta seria “I suggested she added this book to the list, and she finally did” e não “I suggested she added this book to the list, and she finally would”. E A expressão “last year” acoplada à forma verbal “knew” (passado do “know”) indica a necessidade de usar o verbo “can” também em sua forma do passado. Portanto, a forma correta seria “Last year I lived with my boyfriend but I knew I could live with my parents again at any time” e não “Last year I lived with my boyfriend but I knew I can live with my parents again at any time”.
