The degree of formality in business varies according to the company culture. Some are more conservative and formal in how they address each other, how they share information, how decisions are made, how power is delegated, how people dress, and so on.

If you are a foreigner doing business in America for the first time, you do not have to be more informal than you feel comfortable with. If you want to call someone by his or her last name, you may do so. But do not be surprised (or insulted!) if your American hosts call you by your first name. The main thing is that you can go at your own speed

MEETING PEOPLE IN GENERAL: WHAT IS IMPORTANT?
In a job interview, speakers are inserted in a formal situation. In this case people play parts and try to convince each other according an determined objective. So it is appropriate to say that there are factors and circumstances that interfere with the communication process and that transcend the message itself, but act as complementary elements to the process itself. These are the circumstances and factors that we call extra linguistic. They must be observed by speakers if they want to be successful. In a job interview, for example, speakers are living a kind of an artificial situation, dominated by FORMALITY. When meeting people, on the other hand, you may experiment either in a FORMAL or in an INFORMAL situation. You will certainly have to adjust to these external factors and deal with it

Talking about your experience and credentials (qualifications) is the most important part of any job interview. Your qualifications include your education from High School on and any special training you may have done in the past. Your experience is any work that you have done that is directly or indirectly related to the job you are applying for. Education: Remember that your education took place in the past. Therefore you need to use the past tenses,

DIALOGUE SITUATION: TALKING ABOUT BENEFITS & CONDITIONS IN AN INTERVIEW
Read the following conversation between an interviewer and interviewee about the benefits and conditions of a job in a job interview. Focus on the words/phrases in bold.
Interviewer: So, you agree with the salary we are offering you for the job?
Interviewee: Yes I do. There is something that I would
like to ask you. How many days of holiday would I be entitled to?
Interviewer: No problem. For this position you will receive 30 days of paid holiday each year. There's no restriction on when you can take them. So, you can take a day off or two weeks off at any time you want.
Interviewee: Does the 30 days of paid holiday include bank holidays like Christmas Day or May Day?

LÍNGUA INGLESA – PRÁTICA ORAL II
Interviewer: No, you receive 30 days in addition to all the banks holidays in the year. You are also paid for the bank holidays as well.
Interviewee: How many hours a week would I be working?
Interviewer: Well, the job is full-time, so that would be 35 hours a week. That does not include the one hour for lunch.
Interviewee: In my current job I do flexitime. I can work the hours when I prefer to. Normally, I start at 11am and finish at 7pm. Would it be possible to do the same here?
Interviewer: I am afraid that for this position there is no flexitime. So you would have to start at 9am and finish at 5pm. Also, I need to mention about the dress code at the office. If you are meeting with clients then you have to wear formal business clothes. But if not, then the dress code is smart casual. You don't have to wear a suit or tie, but you can't wear jeans or t-shirts.

Interviewee: Is there a pension scheme?
Interviewer: Yes there is. The company pays money into a private pension scheme which you will start to receive when you retire at 67. With the position, you will also be entitled to private health insurance. The company will pay for you to see a private doctor and go to a private hospital for any treatment.
Interviewee: Does the benefits package include a company car?

Emphatic Stress
If you decide to emphasize something, you can change the stress from the principal noun to another content word. This emphasis calls attention to the extraordinary nature of what you want to emphasize.
For example:
That was a difficult test. - Standard statement
That was a difficult test. - Emphasizes how difficult the test was

Contrastive Stress
Contrastive stress is used to point out the difference between one object and another. Contrastive stress tends to be used with determiners such as 'this, that, these and those'.
For example:
I think I prefer this color. Do you want these or those curtains?
Contrastive stress is also used to bring out a given word in a sentence which will also slightly change the meaning.
He came to the party yesterday. (It was he, not someone else.)
He walked to the party yesterday. (He walked rather than drove.)
He came to the party yesterday. (It was a party not a meeting or something else.)
He came to the party yesterday. (It was yesterday not two weeks ago or some other time.)

New Information Stress
When asked a question, the requested information is naturally stressed more strongly.
For example:
Where are you from? - I come from Seattle, in the USA. What do you want to do? - I want to go bowling. When does class begin? - The class begins at nine o'clock.
Use these various types of stress to help improve your pronunciation and understandability.

IN SHORT:
In this class you had the opportunity to investigate more deeply initial and introductory situations that usually open the communication process. We realize that these situations obviously depend on the mastery of language, but we also realize that they also depend on the speakers’ ability to perceive and use extra linguistic factors that can be useful tools. These tools actually allow speakers to enhance their performance. Today we also concentrated in training pronunciation through reading dialogues and expressions characteristics of each presented and discussed situation.

Experience is one of the best teachers.  Gaining experience will allow you to develop your skills and broaden your opportunities.  However, never underestimate your abilities due to a lack of experience.  Every great person in any field had to start somewhere without experience.  The world
is full of exceptionally talented and gifted people that will remain undiscovered because of their self-imposed limitations due to inexperience.  Do not be one of these people.  Gain either the traditional or creative experience needed to enhance your abilities and be the best you can be.

When someone is self employed or freelance employed he is working. When somebody is doing a permanent job and getting paid monthly for "work" he will have ajob. In a job also he is doing work. But when we say work it does not necessarily mean a permanent job.
The difference between job and work:
Work-Work can be both a noun and a verb. Read the definition below:
Work (Noun) an activity of mental or physical effort that has a result or purpose such as: money, growth, a product.
He was tired after a long day’s work. I’m still looking for work.

TALKING TO CO-WORKERS
The ability to make small talk is an invaluable asset when dealing with others whether in a social setting, around the neighborhood, or in the workplace. This skill enables an individual to expand his or her circle of friends, network of business contacts, and list of social acquaintances. In the workplace, there are many occasions when small talk is appropriate: in the elevator, at the water cooler, waiting for a staff meeting to begin, in a lineup at the copier, or in the cafeteria. Dead silence is uncomfortable; remarks of some kind are called for.

This is an opportunity to make a positive impression. Be the first to speak, smile confidently, make eye contact and comments.Making small talk can be worthwhile and fun. People are interesting and everyone has a story. Na open and smilling approach
may bring you your new best friend, romantic interest or become a valuable business asset. At the very least, you'll establish a closer relationship with a co-worker, and after you've repeated the process several times, your circle of friends at work will increase. The whole atmosphere in the workplace will be positively affected. Staff morale will improve and projects requiring teamwork will be facilitated.

INTERVIEW DOS AND DON’TS
For many people, interviews can be a stressful experience.  We would all love to walk into an interview, ace it, and leave the room feeling sure we’d landed the job.  But the truth is that you must prepare, because perfect interviews do not just happen.  You may have all the qualifications and experiences the company wants, but that is not enough.  An interviewer will be critiquing you on more than what you say. Remember, you are interviewing the company just like they are interviewing you.  Go into the interview prepared with questions you would like to know about the company.  For example “How would you describe your company’s culture” or “What do you enjoy the most about working for this company?” will give you an idea of what it is like to work for that company.

Do dress the part for the job
Do research the company and the position you are interviewing for
Do a practice run with a friend or make an appointment for a MOCK interview at Career Services
Do make eye contact
Don’t rely on your application or resume to sell you
Don’t act like you would take any job
Don’t say anything negative about former supervisors or employers
Don’t answer questions with a simple “yes” or “no”

Conducting Effective Business Meetings
By Kathleen Allen, PhD and Peter Economy
Every business, whether it has 2 employees or 2,000, has meetings as a regular part of getting things done. Although employees can communicate with one another in an organization in many different ways, business meetings — if they are conducted the right way — can be incredibly effective and efficient.

Meetings are not only one of the most important ways for employees to communicate within organizations, but they're also the way that teams get their work done. Although individual team members work on tasks outside of meetings, team meetings give members the opportunity to come together to determine the team's goals, its plans for achieving its goals, and who will do what — andwhen.
Take a close look at what makes meetings tick and find out how to conduct better business meetings.

Everyone has suffered through far too many meetings that took up far too much time and accomplished far too little. Unfortunately, this sad state of affairs has happened so often that you may find yourself becoming numb to the fact that your meetings aren't as good as they should be — and could be, if you just had some way to fix them.
Help is close at hand! You can make your meetings better, and you don't have to tolerate meetings that accomplish little or nothing. The power is within you, whether you are a meeting leader or a participant. Do you want to find out how?

Discussing Ideas at a Meeting
Chairman: I'd like to open today's meeting. Robert? Robert: First, I'll quickly go over the main points of the last meeting.
Chairman: …. (finishes) , if no one has anything to add, let's move on to today's agenda. Robert: I suggest we each give a little background on the suggestions we discussed last week.
Chairman:Could you repeat that, please? Robert: Let's start by going over the research you've done on the suggestions.
Chairman: You'll find most of the information outlined in the summary documents in front of you.

Chairman: Yes, our marketing efforts really haven't been effective to date. Robert: I suggest we break up into groups and discuss how we can improve our message.
Chairman: Unfortunately, we're almost out of time. I suggest you submit your ideas on marketing and we can discuss the best next week. Robert: Before we close, could we quickly discuss the Armstrong situation?

A project, by definition, is a temporary activity with a starting date, specific goals and conditions, defined responsibilities, a budget, a planning, a fixed end date and multiple parties involved. You know what you have to do, do it, once, and that's the end of it. That's a project. However, being hip has it's disadvantages.

A project is a proposal prepared for yourself, for someone else, for a whole community or even for a country. It involves making plans for the future and describing them to others or to the community as a whole. At the start there is nothing certain about a project except perhaps the desire or determination to undertake it. Identifying a project involves recognizing a need in a certain place and for a given group of people.

Director: 'Hi John, take a seat. Do you know much about the project?'
Project Manager: 'Hi Peter. I know a little about it.'
Director: 'Well, I'll tell you about it now. The main purpose of the project is to incorporate the existing TB Management Application into the TB Office Application. The scope is very large, it's a fundamental application and it will be for the whole company worldwide. Because we don't want to risk bringing down the whole computer system, the roll out will be done in stages. First, in the UK and Holland, then in the rest of Europe, then the rest of the world. We've predicted how much it will cost and how much money we expect to save. Now, it's with the Board of Directors, waiting for their sign off. But that's just a formality, we'll have the confirmation of the project in a couple of days?'

Director: 'Well, the worst case scenario is that the company's main office application won't work. That's why the roll out will be in different phases. But we doubt anything so severe will happen.'

Project Manager: 'Well, we are ahead of schedule with some of the tasks in the development stage. For example, the customer reaction task went quicker than we expected. So we finished it before the planned date. But we have encountered some unexpected issues with government regulations. The culture department don't like some of the photos, so we are going to have to change them. So there is a bit of a delay.'

Finance Director: 'So, what you're saying is that you won't finish the project in June as we agreed? You won't meet the project's final deadline?'
Project Manager: 'Well, once we have changed the photos, which should be next week, we're going to work harder and longer. So, I'm sure that within a month we'll be on schedule with the project again. And we'll meet the final deadline in June.

Project Planning a Step by Step Guide
By Duncan Haughey, PMP
Step 1: Project Goals
A project is successful when the needs of the stakeholders have been met. A stakeholder is anybody directly, or indirectly impacted by the project.
As
a first step, it is important to identify the stakeholders in your project. It is not always easy to identify the stakeholders of a project, particularly those impacted indirectly. Examples of stakeholders are:
The project sponsor.
The customer who receives the deliverables.
The users of the project outputs.
The project manager and project team.
Tema da Apresentação
AULA 1 – GETTING STARTED, REMEMBERING AND MOVING ON!
LÍNGUA INGLESA – PRÁTICA ORAL II
Step 2: Project Deliverables
Using the goals you have defined in step 1, create a list of things the project needs to deliver in order to meet those goals. Specify when and how each item must be delivered.
Step 3: Project Schedule
Create a list of tasks that need to be carried out for each deliverable identified in step 2. For each task identify the following:
The amount of effort required to complete the task.
The resource who will carryout the task.
Once you have established the amount of effort for each task, you can workout the effort required for each deliverable, and an accurate delivery date. Update your deliverables section with the more accurate delivery dates.

Step 4: Supporting Plans
This section deals with plans you should create as part of the planning process.
Human Resource Plan
Identify by name, the individuals and organisations with a leading role in the project. For each, describe their roles and responsibilities on the project.
Next, describe the number and type of people needed to carryout the project. Detail start dates, estimated duration and the method you will use for obtaining them.
Risk Management Plan
An important part of project management. Although often overlooked, it is important to identify as many risks to your project as possible, and be prepared if something bad happens.

Communications Plan
Create a document showing who needs to be kept informed about the project and how they will receive the information. The most common mechanism is a weekly or monthly progress report, describing how the project is performing, milestones achieved and work planned for the next period.

A lecture is an oral presentation intended to present information or teach people about a particular subject, for example by a university or college teacher. Lectures are used to convey critical information, history, background, theories and equations. A politician's speech, a minister's sermon, or even a businessman's sales presentation may be similar in form to a lecture. Usually the lecturer will stand at the front of the room and recite information relevant to the lecture's content.

Lectures have a significant role outside the classroom, as well. Different awards routinely include a lecture as part of the honor. The public lecture has a long history in the sciences and insocial movements. Union halls, for instance, historically have hosted numerous free and public lectures on a wide variety of matters. Similarly, cchurches, community centers, libraries, museums, companies and other organizations have hosted lectures in furtherance of their missions or their constituents' interests. Lectures represent a continuation of oral tradition in contrast to textual communication in books and other media.

There is a certain amount of mythology about lecturing, one of the most persistent myths being that some people are born with an extraordinary flair for lecturing and if you are not one of the fortunate few, then perhaps the best you can hope for is to get through the material you’ve prepared with little drama and few problems. Of course some people are more outgoing and comfortable presenting to groups than others, but the desired outcome of a lecture is that people learn, not that they are entertained.

The main characteristics of a good lecturer:
present the material in a clear and logical sequence
make the material accessible, intelligible and meaningful
cover the subject matter adequately
be constructive and helpful in their criticism
demonstrate an expert (and authoritarian) knowledge in their subject
pace the lecture appropriately
include material not readily accessible in textbooks
be concise
illustrate the practical applications of the theory presented
show enthusiasm for the subject
generate curiosity about the lecture material early in the lecture.
