The specific objectives of this work are: 1 - To search for the frequency relationship between expressed subject and zero subject in a sample of informal Brazilian Portuguese - and then contrast it with the frequency found in two control corpora. 2 - To determine the motivating factors for filling and omitting the first person singular subject so that some predictability can be obtained about the speaker's choice between "I" and zero in a given situation; alternatively, to conclude that the choice between "I" and zero occurs randomly. 3 - To describe the effects produced by each of the two options in communication, that is, the "difference" between using "I" and using zero; alternatively, to conclude that the assumption that these options produce different effects is false. 4 - To describe the objective explanation for the strangeness caused by the systematic omission of the subject "I". 5 - To determine the frequency of use of the first person singular subject in Brazilian Portuguese literature from the colonial period. 6 - To analyze the use of endophoric and exophoric reference in Brazilian Portuguese literature from the colonial period.
