De acordo com o AKÍ Briconsejos, os diferentes tipos de abrasivos e seus usos são: I- O papel abrasivo amarelo com granulado de sílex deve ser usado em madeiras macias e para lixamento leve, pois desgasta-se rapidamente. II- O papel abrasivo de granada deve ser usado em madeiras rígidas. Ele é mais largo, mas mais durável. III- O papel de óxido de zircônio e óxido de alumínio é muito afiado e é usado em máquinas e para trabalhar com metal. IV- O material de carbeto de silício é muito duro e distribui melhor o calor, evitando a fusão de materiais plásticos. Pode ser umedecido ao lixar metal devido à sua composição à prova d'água. Se também for do tipo "WaterProof seco", possui uma camada auto-lubrificante. V- A folha abrasiva de aço mantém sua eficácia após várias utilizações e pode ser usada em madeira e plásticos. O papel de lixa de feltro contém fibras artificiais entrelaçadas com fibras de corte granuladas e deve ser usado para lixamento leve e rebarbação. VI- O papel abrasivo deve ser usado para lixar superfícies planas.
