What are the steps to measure the propeller shaft runout?
Eliminate dirt, rust, paint, and the protective layer from the surface of the propeller shaft in the areas where the quadrant indicator will make contact with the shaft.
The quadrant indicator must be installed perpendicular to the surface of the shaft.
Measure the runout at the center and at the ends of the shaft, moving away from the weld enough to ensure that the welding process does not influence the measurements.
If the runout of the propeller shaft is outside the specifications, remove the propeller shaft, graduate the shaft by 180°, and reinstall it. Measure the shaft runout again.
If the runout of the propeller shaft is still unacceptable, apply the procedures at the front end of the propeller shaft.
Install the wheels and tires. Lower the vehicle.
The measurement of the runout should be made only at the center of the shaft.
If the runout of the propeller shaft is outside the specifications, replace the propeller shaft immediately.
The quadrant indicator must be installed parallel to the surface of the shaft.
