A Portaria n.º 204/ 2016 defines the National List of Compulsory Notification of diseases, conditions, and public health events in public and private health services throughout the national territory. For the purpose of compulsory notification of national importance, Public Health Event (PHE) is


A. a situation that may constitute a potential threat to public health, such as an outbreak or epidemic, disease or condition of unknown cause, alteration in the clinical and epidemiological pattern of known diseases, considering the potential for dissemination, magnitude, severity, transcendence, and vulnerability, as well as epizootics or conditions resulting from disasters or accidents.
B. the mandatory communication to the health authority, carried out by doctors, health professionals, or those responsible for public or private health establishments, regarding the occurrence of suspected or confirmed diseases, conditions, or public health events described in the annex, which may be immediate or weekly.
C. the harm to the physical or mental integrity of the individual, caused by harmful circumstances such as accidents, intoxication by chemical substances, drug abuse, or injuries resulting from interpersonal violence, such as assaults and mistreatment, and self-inflicted injury.
D. the surveillance model carried out from a strategic health establishment for the surveillance of morbidity, mortality, or etiological agents of interest to public health, with optional participation, according to specific technical standards established by the Secretariat of Health Surveillance (SVS/MS).
