Michaelis and Menten were able to mathematically express that each enzyme not only has its own substrate, but also that, at sufficient substrate concentrations, it has its own rate capable of causing chemical change in this substrate. One of the constants used to express this rate is called the Michaelis-Menten constant (Science History Institute). The Michaelis-Menten constant describes:


a) How the reaction rate varies with the concentration of the substrate.
