Existem dois tipos de glândulas: as exócrinas e as endócrinas. As glândulas exócrinas secretam substâncias para a superfície do corpo ou cavidades e mantêm sua conexão com o epitélio. Já as glândulas endócrinas secretam substâncias diretamente na corrente sanguínea. As glândulas exócrinas podem ser classificadas em intestinal, gástrica, sudorípara, sebácea, salivar, mamária e submandibular. Já as glândulas endócrinas podem ser classificadas em tipo 1 e tipo 2. A formação das glândulas a partir do tecido epitelial ocorre quando as glândulas são formadas a partir do revestimento epitelial. A classificação das glândulas é baseada na forma como os produtos de secreção deixam a célula, que pode ser merócrina, holócrina ou apócrina.
