Os diferentes tipos de DNA encontrados em condições fisiológicas são o DNA tipo B, o DNA tipo A e o DNA tipo Z. O DNA tipo B é o mais comum e é encontrado na presença de alta umidade relativa e soluções de baixa força iônica. O DNA tipo A ocorre em condições de baixa umidade e quando há formação de fitas mistas de DNA-RNA e fitas duplas de RNA. O DNA tipo Z ocorre em regiões curtas de DNA onde há sequências alternadas de citosinas e guaninas.
