A relação entre o clima e a produção animal é muito importante, pois o clima pode ser tanto um regulador fundamental quanto um fator limitante para a produção animal. A adaptação dos animais a um determinado ambiente está relacionada a mudanças estruturais, funcionais ou comportamentais no animal. O animal se comporta como um sistema termodinâmico que troca continuamente energia com o ambiente. A adaptação pode ser medida ou avaliada pela capacidade do animal de se ajustar a climas adversos com perda mínima de peso e mantendo altas taxas reprodutivas e resistência a doenças.
