Por exemplo: The fridge is empty. (A geladeira está vazia). Dessa simples frase, a gente consegue entender como usar o verbo to be e usar um adjetivo! Com simples perguntas como: “How was your day?”, “Do you have any plans for tomorrow?”, “What was the most interesting thing you did yesterday?” essas podem começar um diálogo imaginário bem interessante, try it! All of a sudden this guy cuts in line and that drove Janet crazy. Well, it was a good thing we weren’t in a hurry but I can’t believe people act like that. We ordered one chicken sandwich, one hamburger, two small fries and two cokes. The counterperson asked, “Is that for here or to go?”. I said it was for here and we sat down to eat. Janet asked me about our friend John, if I knew what he was up to these days. I told her he had gone back to college because he’d dropped out two years ago. She said it was about time because without a college diploma he couldn’t do anything. I also told her he had quit smoking, cold turkey, because his doctor said that if he kept on smoking and didn’t go on a diet, he could have a heart attack. Semana passada, minha amiga Janeta invited me out, ou seja, ela me convidou pra sair. To invite someone out significa convidar alguém para sair. Exemplo: I asked Julie out on a date. Eu insisti em pagar mas a Janet disse que it was on her, que era por conta dela, ela ia pagar a conta. A expressão é It’s on me! É por minha conta! Sugeri dividir a conta, split the bill ou split it, mas ela disse que ia treat me, ou seja, pagar minha parte and that’s that, e ponto final. Depois que fizemos o pedido, o balconista, the counterperson, perguntou se era for here or to go. For here, eu disse. A pergunta que eu usei foi, “What’s John been up to these days?” e quando 22 você quer perguntar para alguém o que essa pessoa tem feito, use a pergunta “What are you up?” ou “What have you been up to?”. John tinha abandonado a faculdade dois anos atrás, he had dropped out of college, mas tinha voltado a estudar e Janet disse que já era hora de ele voltar a estudar, it was about time he went back to college, pois sem diploma não se vai a lugar algum. However, Italy has launched its first restaurant to be located in a real jail. At the InGalera Restaurant in Bollate prison, Milan, there are four prisoners working as waiters and five others cooking in the kitchen, headed by a professional chef and a maître. It is a ground- breaking project, which allows prisoners to be gradually included into society. The restaurant has had great reviews: everyone says the food is worth going to prison for. Text 6 The history about seasons One day, the seasons had an argument. Each one of them said, “I am the best!” Spring said, “I am when flowers bloom and it is green and fresh everywhere. Birds fly and insects have fun with new flowers.” Summer said, “Yes, but I am when the sun shines brightly and it feels too hot to do anything. People eat ice-cream, enjoy cold drinks and eat yummy watermelon. Fall said, “I am when trees shed their leaves and cover the earth in orange brilliance. The air feels cool.” Winter said, “I am when people wear woolen clothes, caps and gloves to keep their bodies warm. They get to drink hot chocolate. Birds fly south for the winter because it’s too cold.” Since they couldn’t decide who was best, they agreed that theywere all important because one could not do without the other. It sounds simple, is not it? But the confusion happens when you think in Portuguese in phrases like "there is a dog behind you". See that in this type of sentences, we use the verb "to have", but in English we cannot do the same. Ex: Have a dog behind you – Wrong There is a dog behind – Correct When the meaning is to "exist" as in the above sentence, we do not use Have, because they have a verb and must be used with a pronoun (I, You, It, He, etc.). 24 So as not to confuse your head, just understand that "there is" and "there are" means "to exist." Since the "there are" only happens when it is plural, as for example: There are two cats on the table Interrogative form: Are there two cats on the table? Negative form: There is no problem In the past: Singular - There was an elephant here. / There was not a lion here Plural – There were a lot of people there. / There were not a lot of people there, you are lying. Text 8 How to choose a career Firstly, you must discover what are those standing and lasting values that make you who you are. What things interest you or what things make you want to stop as soon as you begin. Choosing a career is all about you, because if you don't know who you are as an individual, it's going to be extremely hard to convince your potential employer to entrust you with a job. For some of us, we value our families and the ability to schedule work around life or for some it may be the need to work around certain types of people, rather than others. Whatever those values and ideals fit you, you must be comfortable with yourself and willing to try new things! Secondly, you must figure out what you are good at and what brings out the best of your abilities. Obviously, if you are great at painting artwork, but really can't stand working outside in the scorching heat, then you probably don't want to apply for a job as a car mechanic. There are many ways to figure out what you are good at, simply just by asking yourself what are your likes and dislikes, your expectations for your dream career, and what steps you would have to take to get there. Whenever someone comes up to me and complains about their job and how they dislike it so much, I always ask why you are still doing it. Work in a field that fits your mold and who you are, not based on pay or some other factor. Thirdly and most importantly, do something you love! Never get lured into doing a job that makes you grumpy and angry at the world. There are too many career positions out there waiting for someone with your talents to come aboard. Happiness in career and life to me is one of the most vital issues we should all cherish as human beings. Being happy is not only good for those who spend the most time with you, such as your spouse, kids, or friends, it's also good for your health, 25 happiness, and well-being. Like I said before, a great career is not just for the rich and famous, it's for all of us. Some of us have wealthy parents and can just inherit money or work for them, while others have to work their hardest to earn a decent living. But whatever the case may be, your dreams and goals can come true in life, no matter your age, race, or any other factor. Just remember to set goals, aim high, and never give up! You have to be willing to be an innovator and a visionist in your quest to find that dream career. A tsunami can be generated by any disturbance that displaces a large mass of water, such as an earthquake, landslide or meteor impact. Tsunamis can be generated when the sea floor abruptly deforms and vertically displaces the overlying water. Tectonic earthquakes are a particular kind of earthquake that are associated with the earth's crust deformation; when these earthquakes occur beneath the sea, the water above the deformed area is displaced from its equilibrium position. Waves are formed as the displaced water mass moves under the influence of gravity to regain its equilibrium. When large areas of the sea floor elevate or subside, a tsunami can be created. Large vertical movements of the earth's crust can occur at plate boundaries. Plates interact along these boundaries called "faults". Around the margins of the Pacific Ocean, for example, denser oceanic plates slip under continental plates in a process known as subduction. Subduction earthquakes are particularly effective in generating tsunamis. Submarine landslides, which often accompany large earthquakes, as well as collapses of volcanic edifices, can also disturb the overlying water column as sediment and rock slump downslope and are redistributed across the sea floor. Similarly, a violent submarine volcanic eruption can uplift a water column and generate a tsunami. Large landslides and cosmic-body impacts can disturb the water from above, as momentum from falling debris is transferred to the water into which the debris falls. Generally speaking, tsunamis generated from these mechanisms, unlike the Pacific-wide tsunamis caused by some earthquakes, dissipate quickly and rarely affect coastlines distant from the source area. However if the landslide or cosmic body is large enough, it will create a megatsunami. A megatsunami is a tsunami, usually caused by a collapsing island, asteroid impact, or huge chunks of ice falling into a large body of water, and is hundreds of meters high. If passed, they would join the 31 states with existing official language laws. In some states, an official language is treated similar to how official flowers, birds, or trees are treated: as just a designation without any particular guidelines for what to do about it. In Illinois, for example, its English law states simply, “The official language of the state of Illinois is English.” In Missouri, it’s even more vague, more of an observation than a designation: “The general assembly recognizes that English is the most common language used in Missouri and recognizes that fluency in English is necessary for full integration into our common American culture.” Most states go further, with additional guidelines, like Tennessee, which mandates that, “All communications and publications, including ballots, produced by governmental entities in Tennessee shall be conducted in English unless the nature of the course would require otherwise.” In Massachusetts, its Supreme Court ruled someone could be convicted of a crime for violating a written order, even though it was written in English. Even in states where the law includes additional guidelines, however, they aren’t always strictly enforced, or are interpreted to allow for state documents to be translated. In California, for example, its constitution calls for the legislature to “take all steps necessary to insure that the role of English as the common language … is preserved and enhanced,” yet the state offers election services and materials in nine languages, and there’s a Spanish-language DMV website. Arizona, which calls for all state action to be conducted in English, provides bilingual voter materials. “It’s not about language restrictions,” said Karin Davenport, a spokesperson for U.S. English, which advocates to make the language official nationwide. “It’s aboutmaking English the bond that ties us together in our diversity.” English laws can save states money by only requiring they print documents in one language, she said, and it “adds an incentive for people who don’t know English to learn the language.” Opponents argue such laws are discriminatory against immigrants, Davenport said, and efforts to make English the official language at a federal level have stalled since the Obama administration has come out in opposition. A 2010 Rasmussen poll found 87 percent of Americans approved of making English the official language, and 16 percent opposed. The states currently considering legislation that would make English their official language are Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. WHY SHOULD PEOPLE DRINK MILK? Humans have probably been drinking milk for as long as they have been on earth. People who study the history of the world have found pictures from long, long ago that show people milking cows and using the milk for food. Milk is the first food of babies. Animals that produce milk to feed their babies are called mammals. Their mother’s milk is usually the best food for all young mammals. The milk that people in America drink every day comes from cows, although many people prefer to drink the milk of goats. These two animals produce more milk than what their own babies need, and farmers collect the milk to sell it. In other countries, people also drink the milk of camels, horses, yaks, reindeer, sheep, and water buffaloes. Milk is sometimes called the most nearly perfect food. It contains many of the things that humans need for healthy bodies, such as calcium, phosphorous, and protein. Milk also has several necessary vitamins and is easily digested by most humans. Another reason milk is such a good food is because some of its ingredients are found nowhere else in nature. The one problem milk has is that it contains a lot of animal fat. This is good for young children, but not for adults. Foods with too much fat cause adults to have heart disease. Sometimes the fatty part of milk, the cream, is removed. This milk is called low- fat milk or skim milk. The cream that is removed from the milk is used to make ice cream and other foods. Milk is also used to make butter, cheese, and other dairy foods that people enjoy. Besides being an important food, milk also provides chemicals that can be turned into other products. These chemicals are used to make paint, glue, cloth, and plastic. EINSTEIN’S HOT TIME By Steve Mirsky The well-known quote from Albert Einstein in his attempt to make relativity more accessible to the layperson goes: “When a man sits with a pretty girl for an hour, it seems like a minute. But let him sit on a hot stove for a minute and it’s longer than any hour. That’s relativity.” Some serendipitous research shows that the pretty girl / hot stove line turns out to be more than just a clever thought. Recently I came across the statement in its original form. Amazingly the pretty girl / hot stove quote is actually the abstract from a short paper written by Einstein that appeared in the Journal of Exothermic Science and Technology in 1938. Apparently, the great theoretician tried his hand and other body parts, at experimentation to derive his simple explanation for relativity. (Adapted from SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN, SEPTEMBER, 2002) 04 - Einstein’s quote was an attempt to make relativity _____. a) complicated b) simple c) funny d) interesting e) boring RICE WITH 1 VITAMIN A Rice does not contain very much vitamin A. In the poorer parts of Asia, where rice is almost the only food of the rural population, a vitamin A deficiency is common, leading to early blindness. Now Drs. Ingo Potrykus and Peter Beyer, two genetic engineers, have transferred the genes for vitamin A from other species into rice, creating a strain of rice which is rich in vitamin A – the amount of rice in a typical third world diet could provide about fifteen percent of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin A, sufficient to prevent 30 blindness. Now that a few plants with this trait have been created, they are being cross bred with other varieties of rice using conventional breeding techniques, as has been done for centuries. Such cross breeding could further increase the vitamin A content. The development of rice with vitamin A was carried out at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, making free use of patented technology and of the earlier research which had established the basic facts about how plants synthesize vitamins. The corporations holding the various patents all agreed to cost-free use of their patents as long as the rice was to be provided free to poor third-world farmers. The new rice strain was then turned over to the International Rice Research Institute, a non-profit organization based in the Philippines, where it will be evaluated for its adaptability to various growing conditions, food safety, and environmental impacts, etc. The IRRI preserves thousands of varieties of rice with different genetic characteristics, so the new strain can be cross bred to produce varieties suitable for almost any locality. The result is that rural Asians can soon expect to retain normal eyesight. www.members.tripod.com/c_rader0/gemod.html 05 - Which option contains a correct pair of synonymous words? a) deficiency – lack b) allow – prevent c) content – free d) early – late e) rural – poor UNITED 93 Paul Greengrass’s account of how a single group of passengers, almostcertain of death, decided on the morning of September 11, 2001, to fight back against hijackers on a suicide mission turns out to be – after much public anxiety about potential “exploitation” – an example of a hundred per cent professional filmmaking. Greengrass’s movie is tightly wrapped, unrelenting, and, no matter how exciting, superbly precise. For this story of semianonymous group heroism, he uses actual professionals (pilots, flight attendants, an air traffic controller) mixed in with largely unknown actors, and avoids visual or verbal rhetoric. 31 The handheld camera is an active participant in everything that’s going on – and still manages to see what it needs to see out of the corner of its eye. The avoidance of frontand-center staging makes us feel the uncertainty of an unprecedented situation. This is true existential filmmaking; in the end, the viewer’s dread is released in mad exhilaration as the passengers charge the hijackers with the force of water breaking through a dam. A bill passed by the lower house of Congress and awaiting debate later this year by the Senate would make illegal the use of many English-language terms common here. The proposal was drafted by federal deputy Aldo Rebelo, one of the driving forces behind a movement to preserve what he says is "the right of the Brazilian citizen to communicate in his own language." Rebelo said the movement's main goal is to stop the proliferation of unnecessary foreign words that are damaging to the Brazilian cultural heritage. "Why should a person feel stupid¹ or ignorant because he cannot pronounce an English word?" he asked. To guardians of Portuguese, like Rebelo, the flood of foreign words in common usage is an invasion. The movement, called "verbal nationalism," is part of an international campaign to counter the spread of English. Globalization and the Internet have accelerated the proliferation of English in Brazil, which has the largest computer and Internet industry in Latin America. English words such as "mouse", "site", "home page" and "e-mail" are frequently encountered. If the proposed legislation passes, Brazilians and foreigners who have lived in the country for more than a year would be expected to use Portuguese exclusively in the workplace, in school and in all communication for official and public purposes. Excluded from these requirements would be artistic, intellectual and scientific expression; foreign words already in official Portuguese dictionaries; and the communication of Brazil's indigenous groups. Many linguists and legal experts say the proposal is unenforceable. Many Brazilians initially thought the measure was a joke. That was until the lower house of Congress passed it on March 29. "I don't think any law will erase English words from our vocabulary," said a salesman at a Rio computer store. "English is already incorporated into our lives, especially with computers," he said. …Some linguists, however, point out that the increasing use of English in Brazil is part of a cultural shift in Latin America's most populous nation. While French at one time was the foreign language² most favored by educated Brazilians, nowadays many younger citizens are required in school to learn English as a second language and are seen chatting³ in English at the mall, exercising their bilingual skills. But Rebelo's supporters have had some success. They pressured two government banks recently into dropping programs called "Home Banking" and "Net Banking" and replacing them with Portuguese descriptions. "Thismakes no sense," said Carlos Tannus, dean of the Center of Letters and Arts at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. "I don't think we can regulate the use of 35 language by law," he said. Like many experts4, Tannus concedes5 that words come into and go out of fashion much like the latest dance trends6 or clothing fashions. "In a globalized world, it is perfectly normal for words from one language to migrate to another," said Tarcisio Padilha, President of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. "Many of these words will disappear as quickly as they were born7.We have no reason to defend ourselves." By Patrice M. Jones.
