PASSIVE VOICE 
STRUCTURE: 
SUBJECT + VERB TO BE 
+ PAST PARTICIPLE 
+BY AGENT 
 
When choosing the passive 
rather than the active voice, 
the focus shifts towards the 
patient, towards who or 
what undergoes the action 
carried out by the agent. 
 
Omit the agent when 
this information is: 
• Private or secret 
• Unknown 
• Universal or too 
general 
• Obvious or redundant. 
 
 
 
 
 
 
VERB TENSE: 
• SIMPLE PRESENT: 
English is studied. 
• SIMPLE PAST: English 
was studied. 
• SIMPLE FUTURE: 
English will be studied. 
• PRESENT 
PROGRESSIVE: English 
is being studied. 
• PAST PROGRESSIVE: 
English was being 
studied. 
• FUTURE 
PROGRESSIVE: English 
will be being studied. 
• PRESENT PERFECT: 
English has been 
studied. 
• PAST PERFECT: English 
had been studied. 
• FUTURE PERFECT: 
English will have been 
studied. 
• PRESENT PERFECT 
PROGRESSIVE: English 
has been being 
studied.
