PASSIVE VOICE STRUCTURE: SUBJECT + VERB TO BE + PAST PARTICIPLE +BY AGENT When choosing the passive rather than the active voice, the focus shifts towards the patient, towards who or what undergoes the action carried out by the agent. Omit the agent when this information is: • Private or secret • Unknown • Universal or too general • Obvious or redundant. VERB TENSE: • SIMPLE PRESENT: English is studied. • SIMPLE PAST: English was studied. • SIMPLE FUTURE: English will be studied. • PRESENT PROGRESSIVE: English is being studied. • PAST PROGRESSIVE: English was being studied. • FUTURE PROGRESSIVE: English will be being studied. • PRESENT PERFECT: English has been studied. • PAST PERFECT: English had been studied. • FUTURE PERFECT: English will have been studied. • PRESENT PERFECT PROGRESSIVE: English has been being studied. • PRESENT PERFECT PROGRESSIVE: English has been being studied. • PAST PERFECT PROGRESSIVE: English had been being studied. EXAMPLES: • Water is drunk by everyone. • The bed was made by Rachel. • The document had been released into the public domain. • My first trip abroad will always be remembered by me. • The company was sold for $5 million. • That novel was written by Jack Smith in 1912. • My house was built in 1988. • My friend is being interviewed today. • The project has been completed recently. • The dogs have already been fed. • The children will be taught basic math. • The report will have been finished by the end of next week. • Fords are made in Cologne. • Dinner is being cooked by Susan. • "Dubliners" was written by James Joyce. • The house was being painted when I arrived. • Over 20 models have been produced in the past two years. • A new factory is going to be built in Portland. • It will be finished tomorrow.
