Speaking Activity Guidelines

Some points to bear in mind …

BEFORE

• Lead in to generate interest in the topic under discussion. There should be some link with what
has been previously taught. We rarely discuss things “out of the blue”.

• Make sure the discussion has a clearly defined purpose.

• If there is essential language needed for the activity (structures or vocabulary), it should be
presented before the speaking activity.

• Give the students thinking time to formulate their ideas, and/or rehearsal time.

• Check that the students know exactly what they have to do.

DURING

• Arrange the classroom. What form is most appropriate? Pairs? Groups? Whole class?

• While Ss are talking, keep a low profile if possible, (out of eye contact) BUT … be prepared to
prompt with ideas / language if necessary.

• It’s useful to note down useful errors or examples of good English produced by Ss to be dealt with
later.

AFTER

• Get feedback on the discussion. This should not be longer than the discussion itself. Did the Ss
agree / find a solution, etc …

• Have a brief correction slot. Include some examples of good English.

• Does the activity lend itself to some kind of follow-up? (E.g. written homework, further reading
around the topic, internet articles, etc …)
