 Heavy rain has caused flooding and landslides blamed for dozens of deaths in Brazil's Sao Paulo 
state. (Tribuna do Povo/Caio Gomes/Reuters) President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on Monday visited areas hit 
by devastating rainfall in southeastern Brazil as the death toll from flooding that has so far claimed 36 lives 
was expected to climb further as dozens remained missing. Lula flew over the coastal town of Sao Sebastiao 
alongside cabinet ministers before meeting with local officials, who confirmed some 40 people were still 
missing while others remained stranded with roads blocked by landslides. The devastating rains in coastal 
Sao Paulo state came amid Brazil's Carnival holiday period, when thousands usually travel to spend their 
break on the region's beaches, likely aggravating the outcome of the natural disaster. According to the Sao 
Paulo state government, Sao Sebastiao was the epicentre of flooding as 35 deaths were reported there, but 
heavy rainfall also affected nearby towns such as Ilhabela, Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba — where one death 
was reported. 
 Those cities cancelled their Carnival festivities as rescue teams struggled to find people missing, injured 
and feared dead.Global Affairs Canada said it did not receive any requests for assistance from Canadians in 
relation to the flooding. 
 Hundreds displaced 
More than 1,700 people have been forced from their homes, the state government said,. While Gov. Tarcisio 
de Freitas said earlier in the day that at least 40 people were still missing. He declared three days of mourning 
in the state and a 180-day state of emergency for six towns after the disaster. 
 Sao Sebastiao Mayor Felipe Augusto said about 50 houses have collapsed in the city due to the landslides. 
He posted videos online of destruction and search efforts, including one of a baby being rescued by locals 
lined up on a flooded street. 
Weather forecasts show heavy rains will continue in Sao Paulo's coastal area, challenging civil defence and 
fire department rescue teams and raising the prospect of a higher death toll. 
Footage shared by the Sao Paulo state government shows wrecked roads and flooded streets across the 
state's northern coastal region. 
The highway connecting Rio de Janeiro state with Sao Paulo's port city of Santos was blocked by landslides 
and floodwaters.
