A frase anterior à vírgula costuma expressar uma ideia incerta e a frase posterior à vírgula (a tag question), tem a função de obter a confirmação dessa possibilidade. Em português também é comum utilizarmos perguntas no final de uma frase para tentarmos confirmar uma informação da qual não temos a certeza. É muito comum, inclusive, fazermos tal confirmação através do uso de determinadas palavras ou locuções como né, certo, não é mesmo e não é. Tag Questions They play the guitar, don't they? (Eles tocam violão, não tocam?) Afirmativa: They play the guitar. (Eles tocam violão.) Interrogativa: Do they play the guitar? (Eles tocam violão?) Logo, a tag question será feita com o auxiliar do. Como a frase está na afirmativa, usamos a forma negativa de do: don’t. Veja mais um exemplo dessa relação entre as formas afirmativa e negativa: Sally isn’t Doug’s sister, is she? (Sally não é irmã de Doug, é?) Repare que o verbo da frase anterior à tag question está na forma negativa (isn’t) e por isso, o verbo da tag question "is she?" está na forma afirmativa (is).
