Better

AFTER I spent an endless winter driving our three

children to hockey practices and ballet classes and

music lessons - putting roughly 10,000 miles on my

six-month-old S.U.V. in the process - my husband

suggested a family road trip to Canada this spring.

Was he kidding? Logging several dozen more hours

in the car was hardly the way I wanted to spend my

vacation. Yet once we hit the highway, a strange

phenomenon occurred: instead of complaining and

crying as they o en do while traveling around town,

the children built a nest of blankets and pillows in

the back seat.  ey listened to music and stories;

they counted service stations and diners and motels.

ey traced our route on a map, discussing the

strange names and unfamiliar places.

Yes, the empty Gatorade bottles and Doritos bags

piled up - but so did the memories of journeying

500 miles without worrying about plane schedules,

room reservations, airport security and baggage

restrictions. And while gasoline prices are up, in

many places where we refueled they were lower

than back in the New York area.

Road trips are a uniquely liberating form of travel.

But just because you can stop any time and at any

place doesn’t mean you should travel without

an agenda. e best family trips skip Interstate

highways in favor of o eat, interesting routes. ey

involve less car time (no more than 150 miles a day)

and more recreational time. ey include a broad

range of sights and activities, with an emphasis on

exploring the natural world.

Baixado por João Rocha (joaovrocha0808@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|47331221

MIDTERM TEST - TYPE B | 3

2.
