TEXT: NEIGHBORS . . . 
BORROW OR LEND? 
Though we became firm friends with our new 
neighbOis, we often had to be irritated by 
them. We lent them so many things, that we 
never quite knew whether something had been 
lost OI borrowed. Our garden became an unsafe 
place: little boys dressed as cowboys OI indians 
would leap up from behind bushes, point their 
wooden pistols at us to put Q1ll hands up. 
Sometimes our lives were spared; at others, we 
were shot down pitilessly, in cold blood, with a 
sharp "Bang Bang" .

Certamente você viu no texto, dois verbos diferentes 
borrow e lend com o mesmo significado em por­
tuguês - emprestar. Qual seria, então, a diferença 
entre eles? Em português, usamos sempre a forma 
"emprestar" (emprestar para alguém ou emprestar de 
alguém, isto é, pedir emprestado). Em inglês, porém, 
há um verbo para cada situação.
