Guitar Lessons
PART 1
THE WANGS’ APARTMENT—LATE AFTERNOON
Rebecca sits with Mrs. Wang and Vincent and talks about giving guitar lessons. She and Mrs. Wang have
shared a pot of tea. Vincent stands near his mother and occasionally translates for her.
REBECCA Mrs. Wang, here’s what I’d like to do—give guitar lessons to Vincent…free of
charge.
MRS. WANG Guitar lessons?
VINCENT Can I, Mom?
MRS. WANG Uh, this is a very kind of you. . . but why?
REBECCA I feel responsible for what happened to Vincent at the picnic.
MRS. WANG You did not make Vincent cry. Eh—You—uh—Vincent—(She asks Vincent to
translate a word.) Bàn le yi jiäo.
VINCENT (whispering) Trip.
MRS. WANG You did not trip him. You did not call him names. Bad boys did that.
REBECCA I know, but I didn’t protect Vincent, either. The guitar lessons are my way of
apologizing to your family.
Vincent whispers a translation to his mother.
MRS. WANG Uh—This is—a—very kind. But first, I must speak to Vincent father.
VINCENT He’ll say it’s OK.
Rebecca smiles.
MRS. WANG (says something in Mandarin to her son)
REBECCA I’d like to give lessons to Vincent’s friend Alex, too.
VINCENT Yes! (makes hand gesture)
MRS. WANG Alex? Vincent likes this boy. He will take the lessons, too?
Rebecca nods “yes.”
MRS. WANG I will call Vincent father.
She turns to look at her son. She nods her head and touches the boy.
REBECCA I’d like to have the lessons here, if it’s OK with you and Mr. Wang.
MRS. WANG Yes. Here is fine.
REBECCA I’ll bring Alex here and take him home after each lesson.
MRS. WANG How much will the lessons cost?
REBECCA Oh, nothing. Free of charge.
MRS. WANG (asks Vincent to translate: “Tell her we must pay.”) Vincent, gao su ta w6men yInggäi
fuqian.
VINCENT My mother says we must pay.
REBECCA (interrupting) Oh, no, really, I don’t want you to pay.
MRS. WANG (asks Vincent to translate: “Ask her to wait here a minute. I’ll be right back.”) Vincent,
jiào ta zai zhèr déng yi xia, wó ma shàng huilai.
VINCENT She said, ‘Wait a minute.’ She’ll be right back.
Mrs. Wang goes to the bedroom and telephones her husband.
THE WANGS’ STORE
Mr. Wang is showing a vase to a customer when the phone rings.
MR. WANG Hello.
MRS. WANG (speaks in Mandarin)
MR. WANG Hi, Mei-Lin,
MRS. WANG (speaks in Mandarin while Mr. Wang interjects occasionally OK—Um-hmm. She tells him
about the guitar lessons.)
MR. WANG OK…OK. For Vincent, fine.
MRS. WANG Yes. Bye.
MR. WANG OK. Bye-bye.
THE WANGS’ APARTMENT
Mrs. Wang returns with a decorative Chinese vase and offers it to Rebecca.
MRS. WANG Please, for you.
REBECCA Oh, it’s beautiful, but I. . . I can’t accept this.
MRS. WANG (asks Vincent to translate: “Tell her I want her to have it.”) Vincent, gao su tã, yao ta
shöu xia.
VINCENT My mom said she wants you to have it.
REBECCA Thank you very much, Mrs. Wang.
MRS. WANG Vincent’s father is…a.. .very happy about the guitar lessons.
VINCENT Yes!
MRS. WANG (asks Vincent to translate the following: “She is a very good person, and I’m happy that she
came to our house today.”) Vincent, ta shi ge hào rén. Wö hen gãoxing ta jlntiãn
dào women jia liii.
VINCENT	My mother says you’re a very good person, and she’s happy that you came to our house today.
REBECCA (speaking to Mrs. Wang) Thank you. I’m happy to do something for Vincent and
Alex. It’s important to keep friends together.
THE WANGS’ STORE
Vincent is on the phone with Alex.
VINCENT My mom says we can do it!
ALEX Cool. When?
VINCENT Startin’ next Tuesday, after the program.
ALEX Great!
VINCENT Hey, tell everybody the cards were great. Some of them were so cool.
ALEX I will. I can’t wait till Tuesday!
VINCENT Yeah. Me neither.
PART 2
MENDOZA HOUSE, KITCHEN—EVENING
Ramón enters and goes to the dishwasher and starts to unload the dishes. Alex automatically starts helping
him empty the dishwasher. They do this together often.
ALEX I kinda like it here at Grandma’s house.
RAMON How about if we get a new house, just for us? We can’t stay here forever, you know.
ALEX Mom says she’s gonna get a house with a pool.
RAMON Is it hard living in two places—every other weekend with your mom, the rest of
the time with me?
ALEX Sometimes it’s hard. Sometimes I like it.
RAMON I know what you mean.
ALEX Dad. . . do you like Miss Casey?
RAMON Everybody likes Miss Casey. Why do you ask?
ALEX (shrugs) Are you and Miss Casey gonna date?
RAMON Alex, where did you get an idea like that?
ALEX I don’t know. . . Jimmy Peters, at school. . . His dad is divorced and he goes out
on dates.
RAMON I don’t have time for dates. Anyway, Miss Casey is going out with Uncle Alberto.
You know that. Do you have any homework?
ALEX Uh-unh.
RAMON That’s what you always say. (laughs) I’ll put the rest of the dishes away. You start
your homework. No guitar until your homework is finished, do you hear me?
Alex starts to leave but turns.
ALEX Dad. . . do you think I could be a rock star?
RAMON I thought you wanted to be a baseball player.
ALEX I think I’d rather be a rock star.
RAMON My son can be anything he wants to be. . . but first, he has to do his homework.
MENDOZA HOUSE, FRONT ROOM
Alex is doing homework on the floor while eating popcorn. He throws it in the air and most of it lands on the
floor. Mrs. Mendoza walks in the front door and looks around the room. Popcorn is all over the floor, and
the almost-empty bowl is near Alex.
MOTHER Alex, you’re getting popcorn all over the carpet! Please, pick that up. . . right
now.
ALEX (interrupting) I’m supposed to do my homework.
MOTHER First, pick up the popcorn. Then do your homework.
ALEX I bet rock stars don’t have to pick up popcorn.
MOTHER Rock stars? Where is your father?
ALEX In the kitchen.
Mrs. Mendoza heads into the kitchen.
KITCHEN
Ramón is putting away the last of the dishes as his mother enters.
MOTHER Alex is getting popcorn all over the carpet! You should teach him to clean up
after himself.
RAMON	He was just in here helping me clean up the kitchen.
Ramon looks tired. Suddenly, he hears the TV go on. He shouts at Alex:
RAMON Alex, turn that television off. . . this minute!
MOTHER That boy watches too much television.
RAMON	(interrupting) I know. I know.
Ramón opens the door to the basement and heads downstairs. His mother follows.
BASEMENT
Ramon goes to the dryer and takes out some clothes. He searches for a shirt. His mother smells the towels.
MOTHER Ramón, look at you, digging through laundry. You need a wife to take care of you
	and Alex.
RAMON I had one wife. That was enough for a lifetime.
MOTHER Christine was never the right woman for you.
RAMON Look, I was young. I made a mistake.
Ramón is folding clothes and putting them into the laundry basket. His mother starts folding clothes, too.
MOTHER Are you going to see her tonight?
RAMON Yeah. We’re gonna try to settle this L. A. business.
MOTHER You’re not going to let her take Alex to Los Angeles, are you?
RAMON Not if I can help it. Look, Mama, I’m sorry. I’ve got to go.
MOTHER Go. I’ll finish this for you.
RAMON Thanks.
MOTHER Go on. Ramón. . . (He stops.) I wish you luck.
	PART 3
ALEX’S BEDROOM
Alex is in his pajamas, reading a textbook, and writing in a notebook. His grandmotherknocks on the door
and then enters.
ALEX Come in.
MOTHER Thank you for picking up the popcorn. What are you studying?
ALEX Science. All about cells…how things grow.
MOTHER I can see you are growing. Look at your pajamas. They’re too small for you.
Alex kicks his legs in the air; his pajama bottoms are halfway up his legs. His grandmother tickles him.
ALEX (laughing) Stop—stop!
He sits up.
ALEX Abuelita, do you think Mommy and Daddy will ever get back together again?
MOTHER I don’t think so, Alex. Your mother remarried. She’s living with her new husband
now.
ALEX Well, is Daddy gonna get married again?
MOTHER I don’t know. Maybe. . . if he finds the right woman...
ALEX I know somebody he likes.
MOTHER Who’s that?
ALEX Miss Casey.
MOTHER I’m sure he likes her as a friend, that’s all. Let’s go over your homework. Tell me
what you know about cells.
ALEX (pointing to a picture in his book) OK. You see this? This is an animal cell.
MOTHER Animal cell.
ALEX And this is a plant cell.
MOTHER Plant cell.
ALEX They both have cell walls—
AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM—AFTERNOON
Ramón stands outside, leaning on a railing, waiting for Alex. Alex comes running up to him.
ALEX Hey, Dad.
RAMON Hey, buddy. Let’s go. Get your things.
ALEX Just a minute.
Alex leaves. Rebecca walks up to Ramón, who looks very depressed.
REBECCA Hi.
RAMON Hi—hi.
REBECCA Are you OK?
RAMON	Not really. I had a talk with Alex’s mother last night. . . You know, she’s moving
 toL.A...
REBECCA I remember. How’d it go?
RAMON	Not very well. She still wants him to go with her. Of course, I want him to stay
here. It looks like we’ll have to go back to court over it. I don’t know what I’m
gonna tell Alex. It’s terrifying. The judge may ask him to choose.
REBECCA How horrible. But. . . wait a minute.. . you spend more time with him than his
	mother does. .
RAMON (interrupting) True, but who knows what the judge will decide. I’m not looking
forward to telling Alex about all this.
REBECCA Just tell him the truth and that you love him.
Ramón looks at her appreciatively. Alex returns.
ALEX I got my things.
RAMON Go get in the car, please. I’ll be right there.
ALEX Bye, Miss Casey.
REBECCA Bye, Alex. Don’t forget to practice tonight, OK?
ALEX OK.
RAMON Sorry to bother you with all this...
REBECCA That’s what friends are for.
RAMON Bye.
REBECCA Bye.
Ramon walks away. Rebecca looks confused by her feelings for him.
