Comment on the importance of the American Civil War.
Resposta: The American Civil war preserved the union and led to slavery abolition.
Gabarito: The student is expected to mention that the Civil War is the defining event in American history. No

consequences were vast. It preserved the Union, led to slavery's abolition, and dramatically altered the

What is the difference between Romanticism and Transcendentalism?
Resposta: Romanticism was a revolt against reason. It focused on the individual herself/himself, the love of
nature (perfect scenario for poetry and self­discovery). Romanticism was very appealing to the Americans,
because it emphasized the denial of European authority and cultural influence that was taking over the country.
It is based on the need to live intensively, to a great enthusiasm and natural beauty, even elements of the
supernatural. On the other hand, Transcendentalism has God as its centre, emphasis in this life. It was very
important moviment of literature and philosophy.
