Writing Planet is the only program built for English language learners equipped with Project Essay Grade™ (PEG). 
PEG is an automated essay scoring solution based on more than 40 years of research by Dr. Ellis Batten Page, 
whose pioneering work in the fields of artificial intelligence, computational linguistics and natural language 
processing has distinguished him as the father of computer-based essay scoring.
PEG utilizes a set of human-scored training essays to build a model with which to assess the writing. PEG analyzes 
the training essays and calculates more than 500 features that reflect the intrinsic characteristics of writing, such 
as fluency, diction, grammar, and construction. PEG uses these calculations to build statistical and linguistic 
models for the accurate prediction of essay scores, holistically or by trait.

Extremely Accurate
In 2012, PEG participated in two separate Automated Student Assessment Prize (ASAP) competitions. The results 
of that study showed PEG achieved the highest agreement index of the nine participating scoring engines. Experts 
compared the results from each vendor to scores previously given to the same essays by trained human readers. 
They also computed agreement indices for pairs of human readers. Five vendors (PEG and vendors A–D) had 
higher agreement indices than human readers had with each other (as shown by the dashed line at 0.75).
