1 Difração de Raios-X DIFRAÇÃO – Espalhamento coerente + Interferência DIFRAÇÃO - É a combinação de dois fenômenos: espalhamento coerente (elástico) e interferência construtiva. Quando fótons de raios X de mesmo λ, espalhados coerentemente, interferem de modo construtivo, entre si, picos de difração (diffraction maxima) serão observados 2 Os átomos do cristal interagem com os raios-X produzindo interferência. Esta interação pode ser vista como os átomos da rêde refletindo as ondas de raios-X. Mas, como a estrutura cristalina consiste de um arranjo ordenado de átomos, a reflexão ocorre a partir de um plano de átomos. Um feixe de raios X incide sobre um conjunto de planos cristalinos, cuja distância interplanar é d. Os feixes refletidos por dois planos subseqüentes apresentarão o fenômeno da difração. Isto é, se a diferença entre seus caminhos óticos for um número inteiro de comprimentos de onda, haverá superposição construtiva (um feixe de raios X será observado); caso contrário, haverá superposição destrutiva, i.e. não se observará qualquer sinal de raios X. Interação Raios-X - cristal 3 Diversos tipos de planos refletores numa rede cristalina cúbica simples. Os planos são indicados pelos respectivos indíces. A distância mais próxima entre dois planos paralelos tende a diminuir a medida que os indíces crescem. Logo, indíces de reflexão elevados necessitam de comprimentos de onda mais curtos. Ray 1 reflects off of the upper atomic plane at an angle q equal to its angle of incidence. Ray 2 reflects off the lower atomic plane at the same angle q. While Ray 2 is in the crystal, however, it travels a distance of 2a farther than Ray 1. If this distance 2a is equal to an integral number of wavelengths (nl), then Rays 1 and 2 will be in phase on their exit from the crystal and constructive interference will occur. Difração de Raios X em cristais 5 If the distance 2a is not an integral number of wavelengths, then destructive interference will occur and the waves will not be as strong as when they entered the crystal. Thus, the condition for constructive interference to occur is nl = 2a but, from trigonometry, we can figure out what the distance 2a is in terms of the spacing, d, between the atomic planes. a = d sin q or 2a = 2 d sin q thus, nl = 2d sin q This is known as Bragg's Law for X-ray diffraction. Com base nas possíveis combinações de a, b e c a, b e g temos: Sistema cristalino = Sete células unitárias 16 DIREÇÕES E PLANOS CRISTALOGRÁFICOS Direções cristalográficas: são definidas pelos três índices entre colchetes [uvw]. Os números inteiros u, v e w, correspondem às projeções reduzidas ao longo dos eixos x, y e z, respectivamente Planos cristalográficos: são definidos, com exceção do hexagonal, pelos três índices de Miller (hkl). Planos paralelos são equivalentes e possuem índices idênticos. 17 PLANOS CRISTALOGRÁFICOS Determinação dos valores dos índices de h,k e l 18 Exercícios - Difração de Raios X em cristais Exercício 1: Para o ferro com estrutura cristalina CCC, calcule: a – o espaçamento interplanar e b – o ângulo de difração para o conjunto de planos (220). Sabendo que o parâmetro de rede para o Fe equivale a 0,2866 nm (2,866 Å). Admita que a radiação monocromática (tubo Co) com comprimento de onda de 0,1790 nm (1,790 Å) seja usada, e que a ordem da reflexão seja de 1. 19 Ordem de Difração A ordem de difração é a variação do ângulo de incidência que irá interagir construtivamente com um mesmo plano. A ordem de difração diz respeito ao aparecimento de outros picos correlacionados a um mesmo plano cristalino (mesma distância d para picos que aparecem em valores de theta diferentes). Isto ocorre, pois podemos ter um ângulo de difração determinado que atende a lei de Bragg, e que na distância “a”+”a” da figura podemos ter números inteiros de comprimentos de onda. 1, 2, 3, 4... Se na distância “a”+”a” couber 1 comprimento de onda ocorrerá difração para um ângulo theta determinado, se couber 2 comprimentos de onda o ângulo theta será outro (menor), no entanto, a distância interplanar é a mesma. 20 Exercícios - Difração de Raios X em cristais Exercício 2: - Considere uma amostra de cobre com estrutura cristalina CFC, cujo parâmetro de rede é 0,3615 nm e que foi irradiada por uma radiação monocromática com comprimento de onda de 0,1790 nm (radiação CoKa) a - Determine os índices de Miller para os dois planos cristalográficos (a) e (b) mostrados nas células unitárias da Fig. 01. Figura 1 – Diferentes planos cristalográficos em célula cúbica unitária. b – Em cada caso, determine a distância entre dois planos adjacentes e paralelos de átomos, isto é, o espaçamento interplanar dhkl. c – O ângulo de difração para cada conjunto de planos determinados em a e b, considerando que a ordem de reflexão seja de 1. 21 Exercícios - Difração de Raios X em cristais Exercício 3: Ao determinar o parâmetro de rede do níquel, utilizando-se um difratômetro de raios-X com radiação CuKa (=1,5418 Å), encontrou-se o primeiro pico, referente aos planos (111), na posição 2q = 44,530. Pede-se calcular: a – a distância entre os planos; b – o parâmetro de rede do níquel; c – o valor de 2q para os planos (311). Exercício 4: Determine o ângulo de difração esperado para a reflexão de primeira ordem do conjunto de planos (113) para a Platina com estrutura cristalina CFC quando a radiação monocromática com comprimento de onda de 0,1542 nm é usada. 22 Again it is important to point out that this diffraction will only occur if the rays are in phase when they emerge, and this will only occur at the appropriate valueof n (1, 2, 3, etc.) and q. In theory, then we could re-orient the crystal so that another atomic plane is exposed and measure the d- spacing between all atomic planes in the crystal, eventually leading us to determine the crystal structure and the size of the unit cell. Difração de Raios X em cristais 23 Difração de Raios X em cristais A lei de Bragg é uma condição necessária, porém não suficiente, para que ocorra a difração por cristais reais. A lei de Bragg especifica quando a difração irá ocorrer para células unitárias que possuam átomos posicionados somente nos vértices da célula. Entretanto, átomos situados em outros locais, por exemplo, átomos situados nas faces (CFC) e no interior (CCC) das células unitárias, atuam como centro de dispersões adicionais, que podem produzir uma dispersão fora de fase em certos ângulos de Bragg. O resultado é a ausência de alguns feixes difratados que, de acordo com a equação de Bragg, deveriam estar presentes. Por exemplo, para que ocorra a difração é necessário que: - para a estrutura cristalina CCC, a soma h+k+l deverá ser um número par, - para a estrutura cristalina CFC, os valores h,k e l devem ser números pares ou impares. 24 The X-ray Powder Method In practice, this would be a time consuming operation to reorient the crystal, measure the angle q, and determine the d-spacing for all atomic planes. A faster way is to use a method called the powder method. In this method, a mineral is ground up to a fine powder. In the powder, are thousands of grains that have random orientations. With random orientations we might expect most of the different atomic planes to lie parallel to the surface in some of the grains. Thus, by scanning through an angle q of incident X-ray beams form 0 to 90o, we would expect to find all angles where diffraction has occurred, and each of these angles would be associated with a different atomic spacing. 25 The X-ray Powder Method The instrument used to do this is an x-ray powder diffractometer. It consists of an X-ray tube capable of producing a beam of monochromatic X- rays that can be rotated to produce angles from 0 to 90o. A powdered mineral sample is placed on a sample stage so that it can be irradiated by the X- ray tube. To detect the diffracted X-rays, an electronic detector is placed on the other side of the sample from the X-ray tube, and it too is allowed to rotate to produce angles from 0 to 90o. The instrument used to rotate both the X-ray tube and the detector is called a goniometer. The goniometer keeps track of the angle q, and sends this information to a computer, while the detector records the rate of X-rays coming out the other side of the sample (in units of counts/sec) and sends this information to the computer. 26 The X-ray Powder Method After a scan of the sample the X-ray intensity can be plotted against the angle q (usually reported as 2q because of the way older diffractometers were made) to produce a chart, like the one shown here. The angle 2q for each diffraction peak can then be converted to d- spacing, using the Bragg equation. One can then work out the crystal structure and associate each of the diffraction peaks with a different atomic plane in terms of the Miller Index for that plane (hkl). A group known as the Joint Committee on Powder Diffraction Standards (JCPDS) has collected data such as this on thousands of crystalline substances. This data can be obtained as the JCPDS Powder Diffraction File. Since every compound with the same crystal structure will produce an identical powder diffraction pattern, the pattern serves as kind of a "fingerprint" for the substance, and thus comparing an unknown mineral to those in the Powder Diffraction file enables easy identification of the unknown. A análise química elemental é insuficiente para caracterizar o tipo de material: Ex.: Grafita e Diamante!!! O DRX mede a distância entre os diversos planos cristalinos. Cada material possui o seu conjunto de distâncias interplanares característicos que determina sua estrutura cristalina. ANALOGIA – impressão digital Pequenas variações nas distâncias interplanares podem ser indicativos de alteração na condição da estrutura, por exemplo, tensões residuais, solução sólida, etc.. 30 William Henry Bragg William Henry Bragg was born at Westward, Cumberland, on July 2, 1862. He was educated at Market Harborough Grammar School and afterwards at King William's College, Isle of Man. Elected a minor scholar of Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1881, he studied mathematics under the well-known teacher, Dr. E. J. Routh. He was Third Wrangler in the Mathematical Tripos, Part I, in June 1884, and was placed in the first class in Part II in the following January. He studied physics in the Cavendish Laboratory during part of 1885, and at the end of that year was elected to the Professorship of Mathematics and Physics in the University of Adelaide, South Australia. Subsequently he became successively Cavendish Professor of Physics at Leeds (1909-1915), Quain Professor of Physics at University College London (1915-1925), and Fullerian Professor of Chemistry in the Royal Institution. His research interests embraced a great many topics and he was an adept at picking up a subject, almost casually, making an important contribution, then dropping it again. However, the work of Bragg and his son Lawrence in 1913-1914 founded a new branch of science of the greatest importance and significance, the analysis of crystal structure by means of X-rays. If the fundamental discovery of the wave aspect of X-rays, as evidenced by their diffraction in crystals, was due to von Laue and his collaborators, it is equally true that the use of X-rays as an instrument for the systematic revelation of the way in which crystals are built was entirely due to the Braggs. This was recognized by the award of the Nobel Prize jointly to father and son in 1915. July 2, 1862 - March 10, 1942 31 William Lawrence Bragg, son of William Henry Bragg, was born in Adelaide, South Australia, on March 31, 1890. He received his early education at St. Peter's College in his birthplace, proceeding to Adelaide University to take his degree in mathematics with first-class honours in 1908. He came to England with his father in 1909 and entered Trinity College, Cambridge, as an Allen Scholar, taking first- class honours in the Natural Science Tripos in 1912. In the autumn of this year he commenced his examination of the von Laue phenomenon and published his first paper on the subject in the Proceedings of the Cambridge Philosophical Society in November. In 1914 he was appointed as Fellow and Lecturer in Natural Sciences at Trinity College and the same year he was awarded the Barnard Medal. From 1912 to 1914 he had been working with his father, and the results of their work were published in an abridged form in X-rays and Crystal Structure (1915). It was this work which earned them jointly the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1915, and from this year to 1919, W. L. Bragg served as Technical Advisor on Sound Ranging to the Map Section, G.H.Q., France, receiving the O.B.E. and the M.C. in 1918. He was appointed Langworthy Professor of Physics at Manchester University in 1919, and held this post till 1937. William Lawrence Bragg, March31, 1890 / July 1, 1971
