IF MARS IS COLONIZED, WE MAY NOT NEED TO SHIP IN THE BRICKS
We often wonder if somewhere hidden on Mars are the building blocks for life: microscopic bacteria and small organisms. But what about the actual building blocks to build a civilization? A new study suggests that the material we will need to build houses, buildings, and even entire colonies on Mars may already be there. A. __________
Dr. Qiao, a materials scientist and engineer at the University of California, and his colleagues experimented with a substance that is chemically and physically similar to what you might find on the surface of Mars, but is made from particles on our planet. B. __________The team members found that they could turn this substance into bricks. If it works with real Martian soil, the technique could make it possible to develop building material on Mars at a low energy cost, making it much simpler to erect structures on the surface of the red planet. C. __________
His team had previously worked with a lunar soil simulation, which needs a binding agent (a type of glue) to be compressed into a brick. D. __________ After that work, his team set their eyes on Mars. They realized they could produce the same kind of bricks for the red planet with smaller and smaller amounts of their space glue, until they found they could make Martian bricks just by using pressure. E. __________ Team members think that it acts like a glue to hold the particles together after they apply enough pressure to it.
“The paper is an interesting step in the right direction”, said Jon Rask, a research scientist at NASA who was not involved in the study. The next challenge, according to Rask, would be to see if the results could actually hold up in Mars.
