2. 3. Read the following excerpt taken from King Jame´s English version of the Bible: "Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not" (Matthew 6:28). Which main phonetic aspects can you see in it? Classifique V para as sentenças verdadeiras e F para as falsas: ( ) Vowel sound as in Portuguese ô/ó - vô/vó. ( ) Consonant sound as in Portuguese m/n - mão/não. ( ) Vowel sound as in Portuguese i - filha. ( ) Syllabe rhythm, stress and rime. Assinale a alternativa que apresenta a sequência CORRETA: a) F - V - F - F. b) V - F - V - V. c) F - F - V - V. d) V - V - F - F. 4. 5. As palavras homófonas e homógrafas possuem um grande protagonismo na área da Fonética e Fonologia da Língua Inglesa. Sobre as palavras homófonas e homógrafas e suas definições, classifique V paras as sentenças verdadeiras e F paras as falsas: ( ) As palavras son e sun são homógrafas na frase: she loves taking her son to see the sun every morning. ( ) A palavra lie é homógrafa na frase: I have to lie down for a minute, I am tired of explaining what a white lie is to my friends. ( ) As palavras would/wood são homófonas na frase: you would walk in the wood at night. ( ) A palavra dear é homógrafa na frase: My dear, that necklace is so dear to me. Assinale a alternativa que apresenta a sequência CORRETA: a) V - F - F - F. b) F - V - F - V. c) V - V - F - F. d) F - V - V - V. 6. Dependendo da terminação de algumas palavras, a ortografia e a terminação pode mudar na língua inglesa. As terminações das palavras em inglês com -s final muda para - es. Palavras terminadas em -s, -ss, -sh, -ch ou -x recebem um "e" adicional antes do -s (plural ou terceira pessoa). Com base no exposto, assinale a alternativa que apresenta a sequência CORRETA: a) Pay > pays; cry > cries; watch > watches; bus > buses. b) Love> loves; watch > watches; drive > drives; kiss > kisses. c) Cherry > cherries; pahse > phases; watch > watches. d) Kiss > kisses; wash > washes; watch > watches; fix > fixes. 7. Stress is important in English as it is in Portuguese, even if not for the same raisons. About the sentence: "Weather is not nice today", check the one which is correctly stressed: a) Stress is on ther. b) Stress is on is. c) Stress is on day. d) Stress is on: Wea and ni. 8. Assinale a alternativa que apresenta a sequência CORRETA: a) V - F - V - F. b) F - V - F - V. c) V - F - F - V. d) F - V - V - F. 9. Assinale a alternativa que apresenta a sequência CORRETA: a) F - V - F. b) F - F - V. c) V - V - F. d) V - F - F. 11.(ENADE, 2017) "I am an American with a difference: I work at the most British of institutions, the BBC. Generally, as an analyst of U. S. affairs, my American accent is an advantage, lending a kind of authenticity to my words. But there are times when my voice ruffles feathers. This happened to me for the first time while recording a program last year, when through the studio window I saw my producer wince. « I think you've mispronounced something », she said rather tentatively from the control booth. I asked if I had run out of breath at the end of the sentence. Or did I pop a « p » or whistle through an « s »? Bu t my responses only seemed to annoy her. « No, nothing like that", she sniffed. "It's in the last paragraph, the word 'schedule'. It sounded, well, quite American." Being an American, I pronounced the word with a hard "k": S-K-E-D-U-L-E. I was about to suggest we change the script to read "timetable" or « plan » when my producer put forward a suggestion of her own. « Let us try that paragraph again, shall we, with the word schedule pronounced correctly! » It seemed to me that by insinuating my pronunciation was wrong, rather than simply different, my producer had crossed a line. This was now a question of right and wrong, of whether an American - any American - is capable of speaking the English language properly without faking an Oxbridge accent. « I don't think it's actually wrong to say it this way », I ventured. « Wouldn't I sound ridiculous with my American accent saying schedule the British way? » She was ready for me. « Absolutely not. One should never be afraid to be correct. » By now, the studio manager and producer's assistants were listening intently. My etymology lesson continued: « The 'sch' sound comes from German », my producer said, « as in Schultz or schnitzel ». « I suppose you learned that in schule », I said sarcastically. The studio manager, an Irishman, let out a little laugh which was cut short by the producer's sharp gaze. "We are wasting time here", she correctly observed. "Let's move on". Like most linguistic battles between English-speaking peoples, this one ended inconclusively, with both sides agreeing essentially to disagree. (I said "timetable" instead of "schedule")". Taking the text above into account, analyze the following statements and the relationship between them: I- The text depicts a situation in which a speaker of a non-British variation of the English language is criticized for using his own language when it was expected from him to speak with a British accent. BECAUSE II- The British producer acted as a "guardian" of the English language according to a false belief in one unique correct linguistic variation. Considering these statements, choose the correct option. SOURCE: MORAN, M. Listen, you guys, it's my language, too!. In: Speak Up. São Paulo, ed. 101, Aug. 1995 (adapted). a) Statement I is a true proposition, and II is a false proposition. b) Statements I and II are true propositions, and II is a correct justification of I. c) Statements I and II are true propositions, but II is not a correct justification of I. d) Statement I is a false proposition, and I is a true proposition. 12.(ENADE, 2014) Language teachers are often frustrated by the fact that students do not automatically transfer the strategies they use when reading in their native language to reading in a language they are learning. Instead, they seem to think reading means starting at the beginning and going word by word, stopping to look up every unknown vocabulary item, until they reach the end. When they do this, students are relying exclusively on their linguistic knowledge, a bottom-up strategy. One of the most important functions of language teachers, then, is to help students move past this idea and use top-down strategies as they do in their native language. Effective teachers show students how they can adjust their reading behavior to deal with a variety of situations, types of input, and reading purposes. They help students develop a set of reading strategies and match appropriate strategies to each reading situation. Some of these strategies are previewing, predicting, skimming, scanning, and paraphrasing texts. They include reviewing titles, section headings, and photo captions to get a sense of the structure and content of a reading selection; using knowledge of the subject matter to make predictions about content and vocabulary and check comprehension; using knowledge of the text type and the author to make predictions about writing style, vocabulary, and content; making a quick survey of the text to get the main idea, confirm or question predictions; guessing prior knowledge of the subject and the ideas in the text as clues to the meaning of unknown words; stopping at the end of a section to check comprehension by restating the information and ideas in the text. When language learners use reading strategies, they find that can control the reading experience, and they gain confidence in their ability to read the language. Taking into account the reading strategies mentioned in the text, consider the following statements: I- Skimming means to glance at the text to find the desired information. II- Paraphrasing refers to the reproduction of the content of given text. III- Scanning means to read a text quickly in search of its general idea. IV- Previous knowledge refers to the knowledge accumulated from one's personal experience. It is only correct what is stated on: FONTE: http://www.ncirc.org.
