DIALOGUE SITUATION: CANCELLING NA APPOINTMENT A : Hello, John speaking. B: Hi John. This is Mary calling. A: Oh, hi Mary, what's up? B: I'm just calling about our meeting today. I wonder, is it possible to reschedule our appointment in the afternoon? I have a bit of an emergency that I need to take care of. A: Let me see, it shouldn't be too much of a problem... B: I'm really sorry, I hope it doesn't inconvenience you too much, it's just this thing came up, A: Mary, you know what, I can't make it to our meeting, either. Why don't we postpone it to tomorrow afternoon at the same tie? B: Sounds great. See you tomorrow. USEFUL VOCABULARY What’s up? = what’s the matter? Reschedule = schedule something for a different time (The meeting at eleven o’clock has been rescheduled). Inconvenience = cause trouble or problem (I don’t want to inconvenience you, so I’ll pick up the flowers on my way home). Come up = occur in an unexpected way (Sorry I missed the meeting. Something came up). Make it = come (I’m sorry, I can’t make it to the meeting today. I am very sick). Postpone = decide to do something at a later time (Since John is late again, we have to postpone the meeting). No wonder = not surprisingly (Rahki has lived in the United Stated for 5 years. No wonder he speaks English fluently). Scheduling conflict = two or more appointments scheduled at the same time (My secretary has double-booked my appointments and now I have a scheduling conflict). Call off = cancel (I have had a mishap (contratempo) and I really need to call off our appointment). Double-book = have two appointments or meetings to a later time (I’m sorry, but my secretary has double-booked two meetings and I’ll have to cancel my meeting with you). Push back = move a meeting or an appointment to a time later (I think that due to the John’s delay we will have to push back our meeting to 5 p.m.). Rain check = a promise or offer to do something in the future that is not possible to do now (We would like to come to your meeting, but we are busy next Saturday. Could we take a rain check on your kind invitation?).
