TRY SIMPLE SITUATIONS FIRST - GREETINGS
Greeting is an act of communication in which human
beings (as well as other members of the animal kingdom)
intentionally make their presence known to each other,
to show attention to, and to suggest a type of relationship
or social status between individuals or groups of people
coming in contact with each other.

FORMAL AND INFORMAL GREETINGS
- BUSINESS -
The degree of formality in
business varies according to the
company culture. Some are more
conservative and formal in how
they address each other, how
they share information, how
decisions are made, how power
is delegated, how people dress,
and so on.
AULA 1 – GETTING STARTED, REMEMBERING AND MOVING ON!
LÍNGUA INGLESA – PRÁTICA ORAL II
If you are a foreigner doing business in America for the first
time, you do not have to be more informal than you feel
comfortable with. If you want to call someone by his or her
last name, you may do so. But do not be surprised (or
insulted!) if your American hosts call you by your first
name. The main thing is that you can go at your own speed

LÍNGUA INGLESA – PRÁTICA ORAL II
MEETING PEOPLE IN GENERAL: WHAT IS IMPORTANT?
In a job interview, speakers are inserted in a formal situation.
In this case people play parts and try to convince each other
according an determined objective. So it is appropriate to say
that there are factors and circumstances that interfere with
the communication process and that transcend the message
itself, but act as complementary elements to the process
itself. These are the circumstances and factors that we call
extra linguistic. They must be observed by speakers if they
want to be successful. In a job interview, for example,
speakers are living a kind of an artificial situation, dominated
by FORMALITY. When meeting people, on the other hand,
you may experiment either in a FORMAL or in an INFORMAL
situation. You will certainly have to adjust to these external
factors and deal with it
AULA 1 – GETTING STARTED, REMEMBERING AND MOVING ON!
LÍNGUA INGLESA – PRÁTICA ORAL II
Talking about your experience and credentials
(qualifications) is the most important part of any
job interview. Your qualifications include your
education from High School on and any special
training you may have done in the past. Your
experience is any work that you have done that is
directly or indirectly related to the job you are
applying for. Education: Remember that your
education took place in the past. Therefore you
need to use the past tenses,

DIALOGUE SITUATION: TALKING ABOUT BENEFITS &
CONDITIONS IN AN INTERVIEW
Read the following conversation between an interviewer and
interviewee about the benefits and conditions of a job in a job
interview. Focus on the words/phrases in bold.
Interviewer: So, you agree with the salary we are offering you
for the job?
Interviewee: Yes I do. There is something that I would like to
ask you. How many days of holiday would I be entitled to?
Interviewer: No problem. For this position you will receive 30
days of paid holiday each year. There's no restriction on when
you can take them. So, you can take a day off or two weeks
off at any time you want.
Interviewee: Does the 30 days of paid holiday include bank
holidays like Christmas Day or May Day?
AULA 1 – GETTING STARTED, REMEMBERING AND MOVING ON!
LÍNGUA INGLESA – PRÁTICA ORAL II
Interviewer: No, you receive 30 days in addition to all the
banks holidays in the year. You are also paid for the bank
holidays as well.
Interviewee: How many hours a week would I be working?
Interviewer: Well, the job is full-time, so that would be 35
hours a week. That does not include the one hour for lunch.
Interviewee: In my current job I do flexitime. I can work the
hours when I prefer to. Normally, I start at 11am and finish at
7pm. Would it be possible to do the same here?
Interviewer: I am afraid that for this position there is no
flexitime. So you would have to start at 9am and finish at
5pm. Also, I need to mention about the dress code at the
office. If you are meeting with clients then you have to wear
formal business clothes. But if not, then the dress code is
smart casual. You don't have to wear a suit or tie, but you
can't wear jeans or t-shirts.
AULA 1 – GETTING STARTED, REMEMBERING AND MOVING ON!
LÍNGUA INGLESA – PRÁTICA ORAL II
Interviewee: It is the same where I currently work.
Interviewer: The last thing I need to tell you about is the
benefits package that comes with the job.
Interviewee: Is there a pension scheme?
Interviewer: Yes there is. The company pays money into a
private pension scheme which you will start to receive when
you retire at 67. With the position, you will also be entitled to
private health insurance. The company will pay for you to see
a private doctor and go to a private hospital for any
treatment.
Interviewee: Does the benefits package include a company
car?
AULA 1 – GETTING STARTED, REMEMBERING AND MOVING ON!
LÍNGUA INGLESA – PRÁTICA ORAL II
Interviewer: Yes, the company will provide you with your
own car to use for general travel and business trips. Plus,
you will be paid for all your expenses when you are on
business trips, like buying meals and staying in hotels.
Interviewee: Do you have a share scheme?

STRESS AND INTONATION – SOUND MORE NATURAL!
To blend in better, to make
yourself understood, English
teachers should help with
accent reduction. We’ll work
on word stress, sentence
intonation and English
pronunciation.
AULA 1 – GETTING STARTED, REMEMBERING AND MOVING ON!
LÍNGUA INGLESA – PRÁTICA ORAL II
Emphatic Stress

If you decide to emphasize
something, you can change the stress
from the principal noun to another
content word. This emphasis calls
attention to the extraordinary nature
of what you want to emphasize.
For example:
That was a difficult test. - Standard
statement
That was a difficult test. -
 Emphasizes how difficult the test
was
AULA 1 – GETTING STARTED, REMEMBERING AND MOVING ON!
LÍNGUA INGLESA – PRÁTICA ORAL II
Contrastive Stress

Contrastive stress is used to point out the difference between one object
and another. Contrastive stress tends to be used with determiners such as
'this, that, these and those'.
For example:
I think I prefer this color.
Do you want these or those curtains?
Contrastive stress is also used to bring out a given word in a sentence

New Information Stress

When asked a question, the requested information is
naturally stressed more strongly.
For example:
Where are you from? - I come from Seattle, in the USA.
What do you want to do? - I want to go bowling.
When does class begin?- The class begins at nine o'clock.
Use these various types of stress to help improve your
pronunciation and understandability.

IN SHORT:
In this class you had the opportunity to investigate more
deeply initial and introductory situations that usually open
the communication process. We realize that these
situations obviously depend on the mastery of language,
but we also realize that they also depend on the speakers’
ability to perceive and use extra linguistic factors that can
be useful tools. These tools actually allow speakers to
enhance their performance. Today we also concentrated in
training pronunciation through reading dialogues and
expressions characteristics of each presented and
discussed situation.

Experience is one of the best teachers. Gaining experience
will allow you to develop your skills and broaden your
opportunities. However, never underestimate your abilities
due to a lack of experience. Every great person in any field
had to start somewhere without experience. The world is
full of exceptionally talented and gifted people that will
remain undiscovered because of their self-imposed
limitations due to inexperience. Do not be one of these
people. Gain either the traditional or creative experience
needed to enhance your abilities and be the best you can
be.

my God do you learn." - C. S. Lewis

When someone is self employed or freelance employed he is
working. When somebody is doing a permanent job and getting
paid monthly for "work" he will have ajob. In a job also he is
doing work. But when we say work it does not necessarily
mean a permanent job.
The difference between job and work:
Work-Work can be both a noun and a verb. Read the definition
below:
Work (Noun) an activity of mental or physical effort that has a
result or purpose such as: money, growth, a product.

He was tired after a long day’s work. I’m still looking for work.

TALKING TO CO-WORKERS
The ability to make small talk is an invaluable asset
when dealing with others whether in a social
setting, around the neighborhood, or in the
workplace. This skill enables an individual to
expand his or her circle of friends, network of
business contacts, and list of social
acquaintances. In the workplace, there are many
occasions when small talk is appropriate: in the
elevator, at the water cooler, waiting for a staff
meeting to begin, in a lineup at the copier, or in
the cafeteria. Dead silence is uncomfortable;
remarks of some kind are called for.
AULA 1 – GETTING STARTED, REMEMBERING AND MOVING ON!

This is an opportunity to make a positive impression.
Be the first to speak, smile confidently, make eye
contact and comments.Making small talk can be
worthwhile and fun. People are interesting and
everyone has a story. Na open and smilling approach
may bring you your new best friend, romantic interest
or become a valuable business asset. At the very
least, you'll establish a closer relationship with a co-
worker, and after you've repeated the process several
times, your circle of friends at work will increase. The
whole atmosphere in the workplace will be positively
affected. Staff morale will improve and projects
requiring teamwork will be facilitated.

The concept of entrepreneurship
has as a wide range of meanings.
Entrepreneur is a person of very
high aptitude, who pioneers
change, ayttitude found in only a
small fraction of the population.
Anyone that wants to work for
himself or herself is considered
to be an entrepreneur.The word
entrepreneur comes from the
French entreprendre, which
means “to undertake”. ss. The
Merrian-Webster Dictionary
defines entrepreneur as one who
organizes, manages and assumes
the risks of an enterprise.

You have decided to quit your job and open your own
business. First you have to decide what kind of
decisions you will make to start it and then you have
to start looking for a business partner. You have to
take some precautions not to be in for a trouble, as
swindlers are everywhere.
So, watch out!
Let’s see some examples of interviews with
prospective partners and how to discuss job benefits.
After that, let’s analyse some business expressions in
order to allow you to talk about business.

INTERVIEW DOS AND DON’TS
For many people, interviews can be a stressfulexperience. We would all love to walk into an interview, ace
it, and leave the room feeling sure we’d landed the job. But
the truth is that you must prepare, because perfect
interviews do not just happen. You may have all the
qualifications and experiences the company wants, but that is
not enough. An interviewer will be critiquing you on more
than what you say. Remember, you are interviewing the
company just like they are interviewing you. Go into the
interview prepared with questions you would like to know
about the company. For example “How would you describe
your company’s culture” or “What do you enjoy the most
about working for this company?” will give you an idea of
what it is like to work for that company.
AULA 1 – GETTING STARTED, REMEMBERING AND MOVING ON!
LÍNGUA INGLESA – PRÁTICA ORAL II
Here are a few helpful Do’s and Don’ts of
Interviewing:
Do dress the part for the job
Do research the company and the position you are
interviewing for
Do a practice run with a friend or make an
appointment for a MOCK interview at Career Services
Do make eye contact
Don’t rely on your application or resume to sell you
Don’t act like you would take any job
Don’t say anything negative about former supervisors
or employers
Don’t answer questions with a simple “yes” or “no”
