Florence Nightingale was born in Florence, Italy, to a wealthy and aristocratic English family. She died on August 13, 1910, at the age of 90.
She was a polyglot and had a superior culture compared to women of her time. She studied mathematics and philosophy and had knowledge of English, French, German, Italian, Greek, and Latin.
At the age of 17, she expressed her vocation for caring for the sick for the first time.
In 1854, she recruited 38 women to serve in the Crimean War, taking care of the wounded. She organized the hospital, reduced the mortality rate from 40% to 2% in six months, and gained the affection and respect of the soldiers.
In 1860, she founded the Nightingale School for Nurses in London, where nurses were trained for hospital service, home visits to the poor, and supervision, administration, and teaching activities.
