O processo de coagulação sanguínea é a conversão do sangue fluido em um gel ou coágulo. O evento principal é a conversão do fibrinogênio solúvel em fibras de fibrina insolúveis pela ação da trombina. O sistema de coagulação consiste em uma cascata de enzimas proteolíticas e co-fatores. Existem duas vias na cascata: a via extrínseca e a via intrínseca ou via de contato. Ambas as vias resultam na ativação de um fator de coagulação, o que permite a conversão da protrombina em trombina. A coagulação sanguínea é controlada por inibidores enzimáticos, como a antitrombina III, e pela fibrinólise.
