ELISA is an acronym for Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay, which is a test used for the diagnosis of HIV infection.
The first generation of ELISA tests for HIV diagnosis used viral antigens obtained from viral lysis in cell culture and the detection of antibodies was based on the indirect ELISA methodology.
The second generation of ELISA tests used recombinant antigens and synthetic peptides, which increased the sensitivity and specificity of the tests.
The third generation of ELISA tests used the sandwich or immunometric format, which reduced the immunological window period and increased the sensitivity and specificity of the tests.
The fourth generation of ELISA tests has the same characteristics as the third generation, but is also capable of detecting the p24 antigen.
