You have learnet so much already! We hope you keep learning as you go. In this fi rst unit, we thought it would be interesting to cover these points: • Revisit your book’s structure; • Learn some expressions to get your message across in class; • Learn how to use a monolingual dictionary; • Create a checklist to edit your text; • Sum up ideas using key words and notes; • Use your ideas to support your arguments. As you already know, this is your book, so take good care of it! We will have lots of fun together! Throughout the year, you will be given opportunities to practise your oral skills by discussing diff erent topics. In order to get your ideas across successfully, it’s important to say what you think in a clear way and according to context. Let’s learn a few chunks of language that will help you do that! A NEW LOOK INTO YOUR BOOK Objetivos • Apresentar as seções e componen- tes do livro; • Expressar opiniões e argumentos; • Usar palavras-chave. Cards: Situation 1: I’m Maria. I want to do some extra activities to check my learning. Situation 2: My name is Gustavo. In class today, we had an activity in which we heard two people having a conversation in English. Situation 3: My name is Alessandra. I love this section because it brings lots of interesting cultural facts. Situation 4: I am Miguel. I have an English test next week and would like to study for it. Situation 5: I’m Sara. I like this section because it always brings a text and some follow-up activities. Situation 6: I’m Bernardo. This is my favourite part of the book as we can see what the unit will be about by looking at some photos and discussing some questions. Situation 7: My name is Gabriela. Every time I’m not sure I understood a new grammar structure, I use this section. 151 1. Read the excerpt below. It was taken from the transcript of Chimamanda Adichie’s Harvard 2018 speech. Then discuss the questions in pairs. Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie on the day of her Harvard speech. She is a Nigerian writer. Her work has beentranslated into over thirty languages and won important prizes around the world. What does Chimamanda talk about in her speech? What is her opinion on the English woman’s mistake? Why does she say about context and intent? [...] Good afternoon. Harvard Class of 2018, hello. Thank you so much for asking me to be here today. It meant a lot to me, to know that you, the students, select the class day speaker. Thank you. Congratulations to you and to all your loved ones who are here. […] My name is Chimamanda; in Igbo, it means my personal spirit will never be broken. I’m not sure why but some people fi nd it diffi cult to pronounce. A few years ago, I spoke at an event in London. The English woman who was to introduce me had written my name phonetically on a piece of paper. And backstage she held on tightly to this paper while repeating the pronunciation over and over. I could tell, she was very eager to get it right. And then she went on to the stage and gave a lovely introduction and ended with the words “Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Chimichanga.” I told — I told this story at a dinner party shortly afterwards. And one of the guests seemed very annoyed that I was laughing about it. “That was so insulting”, he said, “that English woman could have tried harder.” But the truth is she did try very hard. In fact, she ended up calling me a fried burrito because she had tried very hard and then ended up with an utterly human mistake that was the result of anxiety. So, the point of this story is not to say that you can call me Chimichanga. Don’t even think about it. The point is that intent matters, that context matters. Somebody might very well call me Chimichanga out of a malicious desire to mock my name, and that I would certainly not laugh about. But there is a diff erence between malice and a mistake. We now live in a culture of calling out, a culture of outrage, and you should call people out. You should be outraged. But always remember context and never disregard intent. Situation 8: My name is Fernando. I use this section to recap what I’ve learned in Learning to Learn. Situation 9: I’m Gisele. This section usually helps me because it brings a strategy on how to use language appropriately. Situation 10: My name is Matheus. At the end of each unit, we use this section to check what we’ve learned. Situation 11: I'm Carolina. This section helps me a lot when we need to write a text, because it sums up exactly what needs to be done. Situation 12: I am Davi. Whenever I want to check how far I’ve come at the end of the unit, I use this section to asses myself. Situation 13: My name is Bianca. I don’t like this section very much, because I’m not that into writing. Situation 14: I’m Roberto. For me, this is one of the best sections of the book, because it presents the meaning of complex words. Situation 15: I am Daniella. If you ask me, this is a very useful section as it explains every piece of language we have learned and gives us a chance to practise. […] The fact that Thunberg, 17, is autistic — she identifi es as being diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, though there’s controversy around the term’s clinical use — isn’t necessarily new knowledge; she’s discussed it before on social media, calling the diagnosis her “superpower.” However, as the fi lm points out, the narrative around her Aspergers has often been publicly met with erasure, a lack of dimension, and ableism ranging from unintentionally patronizing to downright heinous. Para o Warm-up, imprima as interjeições HAHAHA e HEHEHE e afixe-as no quadro. Warm-up • Escreva no quadro as palavras English / The world / You. How are these ideas connected? • Você pode dizer a eles, Who lives in the same neighbourhood? Do you share the same opinion about the life there? Who wants to share an opinion? • Para terminar a aula, você pode dizer: Thank you very much for your parti cipation. 1. 1.a. Resposta pessoal.
