proliferating relations between them create the illusion 
of a known world. When I hear "blue," which I’ve never 
seen, I imagine some kind of mental event that's fairly 
close to "green"—which I’ve never seen. I count myself 
an innocent, unburdened by allegiances and obligations, 
a free spirit, despite my meagre living room. No one to 
contradict or reprimand me, no name or previous address, 
no religion, no debts, no enemies. My appointment diary, 
if it existed, notes only my forthcoming birthday. I am, 
or I was, despite what the geneticists are now saying, a 
blank slate. But a slippery, porous slate no school-room 
or cottage roof could find use for, a slate that writes upon 
itself as it grows by the day and becomes less blank. I 
count myself an innocent, but it seems I'm party to a plot.

We hereby present a simple guide to UK etiquette for the 
2012 Olympics.
• British people may seem to apologise a lot, but it 
doesn’t quite mean the same thing here. In the UK, 
“I’m sorry” actually means either a) I didn’t hear you; 
b) I didn’t understand you; or c) I both heard and 
understood you, and I think you’re an idiot.
• London’s bike hire scheme couldn’t be simpler, by the 
way: just go up to the terminal at any docking station, 
pay by card and take away one of our so-called “Boris 
bikes”. When you’re done with it, simply throw it into 
the nearest canal. They’re disposable!
• Please aid the Olympic authorities and organisers by 
demonstrating at all times that you are not a terrorist. 
Do not perspire, take off your shoes, smile in a weird 
way while texting someone, or point and shout: “Hey! 
Look at all those missiles on that roof over there!”. 
In fact, if you’re not using your hands for anything, 
it’s probably best if you keep them in the air where 
everybody can see them.

 O uso de preposições
A complexidade que envolve o uso das preposições em inglês é um dos motivos por trás dos erros de muitos alunos, inclusive daqueles que estudam 
o idioma há muitos anos. Para alguns especialistas, pode ser considerado proficiente o aprendiz que domina, dentre outros itens linguísticos 
complexos, o emprego das preposições, seja no uso marcado pela noção de espaço, seja nos casos de multi-word verbs. Afinal, cada língua possui 
seu próprio sistema linguístico e repertório lexical, e dominar o sistema de uma segunda língua não é uma tarefa simples.
Um caso interessante de ensino de inglês como segunda língua é o de Singapura. O governo singapurense decidiu adotar o inglês como língua 
oficial, incentivando a comunicação entre os diferentes grupos étnicos do país. No entanto, a versão que é, de fato, falada nas ruas é o Singlish, 
marcada pelos sistemas linguísticos dos idiomas locais. Por isso, a gramática e o vocabulário do Singlish refletem uma história de plurilinguismo, 
envolvendo o contato com línguas asiáticas como o malaio, o cantonês e o madarim, entre outras.
Na reportagem “The rise of Singlish”, escrita por Tessa Wong e publicada pela BBC em 2015, alguns comentários de leitores que conhecem o idioma 
foram reproduzidos, dentre os quais destacamos um em que os exemplos de Singlish envolvem o uso de preposições de um modo estranho ao 
inglês padrão. Neles, o emprego de on e off ocupa o lugar dos verbos turn on e turn off. Observe:
“Can you on the fan?” “Can you off the aircon?”
Os exemplos nos levantam algumas questões: De que modo o uso não padrão de itens linguísticos como preposições pode ser “simplificado” por 
falantes não nativos sem que haja problema de comunicação? Em países multilíngues como Cingapura, é justo cobrar da população que adote uma 
língua tão diferente das locais como a oficial?
