Cadu Cinelli e Warley Goulart (coordenadores d’Os Tapetes Contadoresde Histórias) SHTIM SHLIM – AN APPRENTICE´S DREAM SHTIM SHLIM – AN APPRENTICE´S DREAM is one of the most recents works of Os Tapetes Contadores de Histórias, a group from Rio de Janeiro which has been creating, for 18 years, rugs and other cloth objects to set the scenery for tales from all over the world, developing a singular language which blends storytelling, theatre and visual arts. Representing a new perspective on their artistic investigations, as if there were a good smell of novelty in the air, the group has expanded their scenographic scale by taking over the space of a gallery as a unique and whole narrative, a space to “perform” next to the visitor-spectator who listens, sees and experiences the story. The thread that guides this installation is the story entitled “In which it talks about a child who has the moon on its left sleeve and the sun on its right sleeve”, from the book “Freeman Sto- ries” retold by Hamadi, a collection of traditional Berbers’ tales, a nomad people from North of Africa. The narrative presents the saga of a young man who seeks to become a wizard and dis- cover how to use his powers with science, bravery and compassion. As a boy, the young Shtim Shlim has a dream that guides him step by step to his destiny. Filled with peripetias (sudden turns of events), revelations, dangers and adventures, the fate of the little wizard is drawn before the visitor through visual compositions created by artists Cadu Cinelli, Edison Mego, Rosana Reátegui and Warley Goulart , from the group Os Tapetes Contadores de Histórias. Color, texture and shape account for the journey-installation of the one who will learn The All And The Magic Above All. A path full of tests which will guide the visitor-spectator through the space of a mythical tale which has long lived in popular imagery. In addition, distinguished partners were invited: the great storyteller Inno Sorsy, as art direc- tor of the performance; actress and visual artist Analu Prestes as scenographic supervisor; actress and storyteller Luciana Zale as playwriting collaborator; and musician Serge Erège as soundscaper. New creation paths, new views about one´s own work, new techniques and skills take shape in this magical place in order to become an invitation to you, our spectator: to touch, feel, listen, interact and rediscover yourself through this instalation. SHTIM SHLIM – AN APPRENTICE´S DREAM premiered in September 2014 and since then was showed at CAIXA Cultural (Brasília, Rio de Janeiro and Recife). Along 2016 and 2017, after the season in Rio de Janeiro at Biblioteca Parque Estadual, the exhibition goes to Fortaleza, São Paulo, Salvador and Curitiba (CAIXA Cultural). SHTIM SHLIM has been stamped as “recom- mended play” by CEPETIN (Infant Drama Re-search Center) and also won Best Play and Best Set Design by Zilka Salaberry Awards. Cadu Cinelli and Warley Goulart (the coordinators of “Os Tapetes Contadores de Histórias”) Acredito em magias, encantamentos,em encontros guiados pelo Sol, pela Lua e pelas Estrelas. ANALU PRESTES I believe in spells, enchantments, in meetings led by the Sun, the Moon and the Stars. I believe that listening to stories can transport us to imaginary places and make us travel in Time and Space and reflect on Life and the existence of Everything. My meeting with os Tapetes Contadores de Histórias is part of this spell and this enchantment; to bring closer people of the same tribe. With my background in visual and scenographic arts, I have arrived in these lands to somehow collaborate on the supervision of the creation and installation of the scenic space in which these multiple artists will lead us to the world of SHTIM SHLIM. Towards the All and the Magic above All. INNO SORSY Coming from London to Rio de Janeiro to work with Os Tapetes Contadores de Histórias on a tale of the Berber people (who live in the north of Africa) is, from the start, a great adventure through languages, cultures, meaning and comprehension. Working in order to get to know the story of Shtim Shlim, the boy who wanted to learn The All and The Magic Above All, is a journey we´re taking on together, towards a land that looks familiar at first but that, at every turn, can reveal that nothing is what it appears to be. A kaleidoscope in constant change in a world of transformation that moves our perspectives as we follow Shtim Shlim in his studies and, like himself, sometimes we get to find ourselves and sometimes we happen to lose ourselves. We hope to take you on a ride through this magical place. SYNOPSIS As a child, Shtim Shlim has a strange and premonitory dream: he sees the sun entering through the right sleeve of his shirt and the moon entering through the left. His father interprets the boy´s dream saying that he is going to get married twice. He grows up with this vision in mind and, when he becomes a young man, decides to leave in search of knowledge from an old wizard who can teach “The All and The Magic Above All” but that kills his pupils after the final test. After a long period of apprenticeship, with the help of the wizard´s daughter, he manages to save himself and returns to his father´s home. In a pursuit, Shtim Shlim and the old wizard engage in a battle of magic. They turn into different objects and animals. With the help of the princess of that kingdom, the young Shtim Shlim manages to defeat his old master and becomes, next to the wizard´s daughter and the princess, a great king. PERFOMANCE - INSTALLATION The performance takes place in front of and inside the gallery, with an installation specially created as the scenography of this tale, with objects made of fabric, sewn on a large scale, providing the spectator with a pathway to interact with the objects, go through them and touch them while listening to sounds which allude to the story in a sensorial and dreamlike game. Once the script was written, Cadu Cinelli, Edison Mego, Rosana Reátegui and Warley Goulart, members of Os Tapetes Contadores de Histórias, created the installation, where its components refer to bodily transformations (the magic of the tale) and to natural elements such as the sun, the moon, the lands, the seas and the stars, in the form of objects, models and environments. The components of the installation – such as a 4-meter-high-tree made of fabric, a 2-meter-high-greyhound made of patchwork, a cat´s cradle for the visitors to go through, among others – refer to the transformations undergone by the protagonist in the course of his learning and maturing process. These elements create relations and produce meaning as the audience contemplates and responds to the stimuli offered by the installation as well as relates, during the performance, to the actors-narrators. After the performance the audience is invited to walk through the installation space in order to relive the moments of the tale, interact with the art works and retell the story lived about a young man who learned THE ALL AND THE MAGIC ABOVE ALL.
