An epidural or extradural hematoma is an accumulation of blood between the dura mater (the outermost layer of the meninges) and the cranial vault (the skull). It is typically caused by arterial bleeding, which leads to rapid expansion of the hematoma. Patients who experience progressive deterioration of consciousness level and/or focal deficits should be evaluated for the possibility of surgical intervention.
