The strongest and the weakest: As man's population soars towards 6 billion, other species sharing the planet with him are being driven to extinction. In biological terms, the disappearance of less efficient forms before more efficient or better adapted ones is not new. But the present situation has no parallels because the endangered species, and those that have already wanished during the past 400 years, have not fallen before man's biological superiority. Many species are more and more victims of man's greed, stupidity and thoughtlessness.
One of the most important facts is that only 1/4 of the birds and mammals that have vanished since 1600 have done so through natural causes. Man is responsible for the plight of about 68% of the endangered birds and 86% of mammals. Since 1600 at least 120 forms of mammals and 150 forms of birds have become extinct; and today at least a further 120 species of mammals and 187 species of birds are threatened with this fate.
These figures represent almost 7% of the species in these two groups that existed in 1600.

Some of the endangered animals are: Polar bear, the California condor, the vicuna, the addax, the blue whale, the snow leopard, the monkey-eating eagle and mountain gorilla, among many others.
To some degree the problem is now being faced by the creation of natural reservers and by legislation to protect endangered species, but it may already be too late.
