Analyze the following statements regarding the relationship between cultures and the environment. For example, in the case of fruits, there was a notable improvement in some cultures under the production conditions in the Northeast, a non-endemic area for the occurrence of important diseases and pests, which favored the productivity of these cultures associated with the improvement of the quality of life and the economy of small municipalities. Furthermore, the other variables involved in quality agricultural production were also extensively researched, namely:
a) Soils: soil science in Brazil has evolved constantly throughout the Green Revolution. From a mere support medium, the soil came to be understood as the main vehicle for supplying nutrients to plants. In addition, its chemical composition, structure, dynamics, depth, and interactions with microorganisms were evaluated through scientific research, which revealed a series of technical solutions that allowed the increase in crop productivity, including conventional planting, soil fertility science (chemical fertilizers), and the sizing of machinery and implements for specific situations (dependent on soil structure and texture).
b) Relief: the conformation of terrains for agricultural activity was also extensively studied to better understand the behavior of cultures in different slope situations. These studies created methodologies that are still used to technically classify production areas, through their Agricultural Aptitude and Land Use Capacity (LEPSCH, 1983). Furthermore, techniques for containing erosive processes and conservationist processes were developed in the second half of the 1980s, such as the system of terraces and containment boxes, level planting, green manure, and others that are still of significant importance to this day.
c) Climate: based on studies of the adaptability of cultures to different climatic types, it was also customary to evaluate the climate and weather through agricultural climatology studies. Climatic maps gained better interpretation, and investments were made in the weather forecasting system, which served as a subsidy for the implementation of the agroclimatic zoning technique or Agricultural Risk Climate Zoning in the 1990s. This is an instrument of agricultural policy and risk management in agriculture, formed by studies aimed at minimizing risks related to climatic phenomena, allowing each municipality to identify the best planting time for crops in different types of soil and crop cycles.
d) Water: the management of water resources in a productive system began from the moment when it became possible to establish a culture in a region where only water is the limiting factor. For example, animal production systems in the Cerrado or even fruit production in the Northeast required the creation of technologies for continuous or intermittent water supply. As a result, irrigation systems by sprinkling, dripping, or gravity, supplied through cisterns, deep wells, or pumping motors in streams and rivers were developed and promoted. The result is that we can plant soybeans in the Cerrado with the risk of lack of rain in crucial periods of the crop (during flowering and grain filling).
e) Diseases, pests, and invasive plants: the development of Phytopathology (plant disease science), Entomology (insect science), and knowledge of botany, plant physiology, and biochemistry allowed the evolution in the development of pesticides based on the principle of eliminating the limiting factor through some chemical mechanism. For example, in the case of invasive plants, most of the action mechanisms were developed from 1940 to 1990. When we talk about an 'action mechanism,' we are referring to a vital metabolic point for the plant, highly characterized and under which we can interfere to stop it. Glyphosate, for example, blocks the synthesis of the enzyme Enol Pyruvate Shikimate Phosphate Synthase - EPSPS. Normally, this enzyme allows the metabolic route of aromatic amino acid synthesis derived from chorismate to proceed normally. Without this enzyme, the plant is unable to synthesize these amino acids and consequently perishes.
f) Mechanization: the evolution of agricultural machinery was one of the first factors researched during the Green Revolution, together with the cultures. Adaptations of machinery that could be made to our conditions were researched, especially wheel dimensions, ballast mass, power ratio, engine sizing, and other component parts, adaptation of harvesters to new spacings and planting densities, adaptation of sprayers, seeders, fertilizers, lime spreaders, mowers, and other prominent implements. Furthermore, the process of agricultural mechanization management was highlighted in this area, through the calculation of Total and Effective Work Capacity and the creation of efficiency testing protocols with the machines, which allowed managers on rural properties to schedule their activities and list the machines most adapted to the requirements.
g) The text continues with a discussion about the impact of the Green Revolution from a social perspective, but the options provided in the question end here.
