1Translating poetry may not represent the same difficulties and issues as translating a letter or even a novel of a contemporary author. It involves many levels of difficulties. Consider the following lines, taken from the poem, "Administério", by Paulo Leminski: "Quando o mistério chegar, já vai me encontrar dormindo, metade dando pro sábado, outra metade, domingo." If ever you were asked to translate these lines, what would be one of your major troubles? Check the correct answer: A It would be to translate the style of the author, or "efeitos estilísticos". B It would be to select the correct words, or "empréstimos". C It would be the days of the week "sábado" and "domingo", or "vocabulário". D It would be to arrange words in the correct order, or "sintaxe". 2 Decalque é uma forma de empréstimo linguístico. Nele, é atribuído a um grupo de palavras uma nova forma de expressão, traduzindo os sentidos sem trair a forma ou subverter a estrutura sintática da língua de chegada. Considerando um exemplo de decalque, assinale a alternativa CORRETA: A Correio eletrônico. B Dutyfree. C Chat. D Mouse. 3Read the following text: Joan is a young Brazilian that has just been accepted at the Oxford Open University as a Ph. D. Professor in the English Literature department. Joan always wanted to study and live abroad. This is one of the reasons that contributed to her professional achievement. It is not easy to quit your own land and start a new life over from scratch abroad. Would you do it too if ever you were offered the opportunity? Read the assumptions below. Only one provides wrong information. Check this option: A That has just been accepted - corresponds to "que acabou de ser admitida".. B This is one of the reasons - corresponds to "essa é uma das razões". C The Oxford Open University - gives cultural information about the source culture. D Ph. D. Professor (at the Open University) is the same as a teacher. 4The translation is not only a matter of replacing words from the source language with words in the target language. Read the following text: Mary has always dreamt of living abroad. That's how, in 1998, she left her Brazilian small town and when to New York to accomplish her dream. In the beginning, life had not been easy at all. But when she looks back to the past, the only conclusion she gets to is that it was worth every single effort and pain. After all: No pain, no gain! According to the text and to the translation studies, check the correct answer: A No pain, no gain shall be translated word-to-word. B No pain, no gain - would be properly translated by transposition only. C "No pain, no gain" - may require research for an equivalent saying. D No pain, no gain corresponds to four translation units. 5"Empréstimo" corresponds to a linguistic phenomenon that occurs When a word from one language is used in another one. This may occur for the globality of the meaning of specific usage of the word in a specific field. For example: in the Portuguese language that is spoken in Brasil, "mouse" corresponds to the computer appliance that is used with a computer. Classify the following sentences according to the type of "empréstimo". Use the code: I- Empréstimo com aportuguesamento. II- Empréstimo sem aportuguesamento. ( ) A sua internet é wi-fi? ( ) Com o seu novo smartphone, você nunca mais vai ficar de desconectado. ( ) Você já viu quantos airbags tem o carro da minha mãe? ( ) O gol marcado não valeu porque o atacante fez um pênalti. Check the correct answer: A II - II - II - I B II - I - II - II C I - II - II - I D II - II - I - I 6When it comes to "empréstimos linguísticos" it is not always easy to identify the meaning of a certain word in its original language. Some English words may be used in the Portuguese language with switching in meaning. Among the options below, check the word that presents a switching in the meaning when it is used by Brazilian speakers: Check the correct answer: A To realize / realizar (perceber) B Tennis / tênis (sapato esportivo) C Whatsapp / Whatsapp ou Zapi zapi (rede social para comunicação rápida) D Website / Site (Página na internet) 7Languages do not always place words in the same order in the sentence. In English you may say: I saw a nice movie yesternight. In Portuguese, however, this may be restituted as "Vi um filme legal ontem a note". Not only words have moved from one place to another but also not all of them appear in the Portuguese version exactly the same way they appeared in English. About these changes, read the following sentences: I- "Vi" corresponds to the English two words "I saw". II- "Um filme" corresponds to the English "movie", III- "Nice movie" corresponds in Portuguese to "filme legal", but could also be "belo filme", depending on the context of this sentence. IV- "Movie" could be translated as "longa metragem" without any change in the meaning. Check the correct answer: A II - IV are correct. B I - III are correct. C II - III are correct. D I - II are correct. 8Languages and cultures greatly differ one from another. That's why translating a text from language A to language B may sometimes become a real challenge for the translator. This is mainly the case whenever an equivalent word or reality may not be easily found in the second language. Check the following assumptions and the choices that were made by the translator by translating the sentence: "How charming and effectively these foreign tags assist one in the great task of calling a spade by some other name". I- How charming and effectively - Como ... caem bem e são eficazes. II- These foreign tags assist one - Essas bandeiras estrangeiras assistem a um. III- Assist one - (nos) auxiliam. IV- Calling a spade by some other name - Chamar uma espada por algum outro nome. Check the correct answer: A I - III are correct B II - III are correct C I - II are correct D I - IV are correct 9 Estrangeirismo é um tipo de empréstimo de palavras entre idiomas. O idioma que importa a palavra estrangeira, mantém traços do outro idioma, tais como: fonemas, a grafia, flexões etc. No procedimento técnico da manutenção pode haver aclimatação ou não. Sobre a aclimatação, analise as sentenças a seguir: I- Comprei uma prancha de surfe. II- Tu já viu meu novo smartphone? III- Vocês compraram uma picape? IV- Esse teu laptop é dez! Assinale a alternativa CORRETA: A As sentenças I e III estão corretas. B As sentenças II e III estão corretas. C As sentenças I e II estão corretas. D As sentenças II e IV estão corretas. 10There is a great variety of languages in the world that show a common origin. This may justify why some words of the English language may look-alike words in other European languages. Technology may also generate new vocabulary and influence languages. Think about the English or words with an English appearance. Read the following statements and check the only one that is not correct: A "Deletar" is an example of "estrangeirismo" B "terrific" and "horrível" have exactly the same meaning in English as in Portuguese. C Translators may contribute to induce switchings in the meaning when giving "qualificar" as a synonym of "classificar", for the English verb "to qualify". D It is correct to use the word "notebook" for the English word laptop.
