5- Cultures have always been in touch. Since the times of the Egyptians or the Silk Road trade
experiences, many peoples have got to know each other. They have met new languages, ways of
living, realities, and forms to express these realities. Translation has thus been a daily activity all
along the times. Read the following assumptions about this major human activity. Only one of them
is correct. Check the correct answer:

6- Read the following excerpt: "Many people eat bread, but how many people can take corn from a
field and make bread out of it without help? I had to learn and to make many new things, and it was
a year before I cooked and ate my first bread. During all this time I never stopped thinking about
escape. When I traveled across to the other side of the island, I could see the other islands, and I
said to myself, 'Perhaps I can get there with a boat. Perhaps I can get back to England one day.' So I
decided to make myself a boat. Cut down a big tree, and then began to make a long hole in it. It was
hard work, but about six months later, I had a very fine canoe" (DEFOE, 1997).

sentenças a seguir:
Assinale a alternativa CORRETA:
A

B
As sentenças III e IV estão corretas.

10- Translating is not a simple task. It corresponds to multiple skills that interfere in the passage of
a certain linguistic material or text from one culture to the other. When translating, the translator is
actually dealing with words, structures, grammar rules, but not only. Still must be taken into
consideration a few phenomena which determine his job. Taken what is stated above into
consideration, relate the items:
I- It is not necessary to know much of the cultures involved.
II- It is absolutelly required that a translator has lived in the culture he is translating for.
III- Translating shall only be totally suceeded if the translation is made from the Foreigner language
to the mother tongue of the translator.
( ) Not really. If ever a translator has got a good comprehension of the language, and the culture and
sociolinguistic aspects it may be perfectly possible to translate both ways.
( ) It is absolutelly necessary to know about the cultures, the aims for the job, public involved and
so forth.
( ) If ever this kind of experience were a requirement for translating, this would mean that studying
does not lead to a whole comprehension of a certain language or culture.
( ) Translating a text from language A to language B means to have a deep understanding of either
the language and the cultures involved in the task, and not a nationality.
