Criado pela Associação Fonética Internacional em Paris no ano de1886.
Pequenas modificações no alfabeto ocorreram em 1989 (Kiel). Posteriormente alguns ajustes em 1993 e 1996.

DIFERENÇAS ENTRE FONÉTICA E FONOLOGIA
FONÉTICA – Estuda a natureza física da produção e percepção dos sons da fala (fones).
FONOLOGIA – Estuda a maneira como os sons (fones) se organizam dentro de uma língua, classificando-os em unidades capazes de distinguir significados, chamadas fonemas.

A Fonologia também estuda outros tópicos, como a estrutura silábica, o acento e a entonação. Existem alguns problemas de ordem fonológica que podem dificultar o aprendizado do inglês como segunda língua.

 DIFERENÇAS DE ESTRUTURA SILÁBICA 
 A língua inglesa tem palavras com estruturas silábicas bem menores do que a língua portuguesa.
EX: Boy / me-ni-no. Beer / Cer-ve-ja. Dog / Ca-chor-ro. Food / Co-mi-da. Wife / Es-po-sa.

Em frases, a diferença tende a aumentar devido à estruturação gramatical mais compacta do inglês.

ENTONAÇÃO
Uma pequena diferença na entonação pode mudar completamente o sentido da sentença.
Ex:
THEY’RE HUNTING DOGS!
THEY’RE WASHING MACHINES!

PRONÚNCIA – existe alguma dificuldade para entendimento da pronúncia de certas palavras por não nativos em uma conversação em tempo real. Geralmente por não conhecer o contexto conversacional.
Ex:
“A new display” e “A nudist play”.

FORMAS FRACAS – existem algumas palavras que, numa conversação, são quase imperceptíveis. São as que têm formas fracas de pronúncia. Já outras apresentam formas de pronúncia cheia ou forte. Essa alternância entre fracas e fortes é comum numa conversação e é o que dá o ritmo da conversa e a entonação das frases.
