Examples of Note-taking
Good note-taking will satisfy VPReFRE – Visual, Processed, Relational, Freehand, Reflective and Efficient.
Overall, if mind maps are done correctly, it will satisfy this checklist.
But first, we will take a look at a variety of examples of notes and show you why the notes are good or very
bad. You might be shocked to see that common (even typically applauded) ways that students take
notes is a very ineffective way of learning. In going through this lesson, we will show you how traditional
notes can be made better so you can retain, recall and apply more information.

Hey, I’m a little confused as to how VPReFRE would look in class. I’m finding that I can’t visually process
the information at the pace the class is going. Do we just spend class time answering “what” questions
and process them later with the aim and shoot cycle?

Hi Ashton,
Just out of curiosity, why was the last example of just scribbling notes of 50 pages considered even
effective?

Because it can be visual, processed, relationship, freenhand, reflective but it’s defintely not efficient. So
it may help actually help you more than other examples shown but because it’s such a mess, it’s hard

Just making sure, am I now switching from the Traffic Light System to simply the “process” step, which is
just visuals (drawings, diagrams, arrows between subjects)? Or do I keep the summary notes and then
do the processing on the other half of the page?

If you’re referring to the one at 25mins. It is freehand because it’s written by hand in a format that
does not look like a linear typed document.

at 27min the notes are freehand are’nt they?

By “freehand” it means that the information is reprsented freely without the constraints of just typing
the information out in Word. So information is not linear and can be at different places. There can be
drawings with arrows and represent information “freely”.
Whilst those set of notes is handwritten, it is not freehand because it’s literally like a word document
except handwritten.

I understand that this is a checklist for ‘efficient notetaking’, i.e. Mindmapping. However, if notes such as
mindmaps are recognised as efficient by having all the categories of the VPReFRE consolidated, how do
we determine if mindmaps we make in the future are even more efficient if they just go by an arbitrary
measure of ticks and crosses as shown by the checklist, or would we switch to a more psychological
measure that is more qualitative as mentioned previously to evaluate if the efficiency of ones mind-
mapping and learning techniques has increased?

indicator.

Oh, alright. What is the ideal checklist that we could use as an arbitrary measure of all the
requirements for a good mindmap? Would be GRINDE be better than VPReFRE?

If you have already seen the later lessons and known about the GRINDE map, you will be
shown that the GRINDE map is the best way to hits all the points on the VPReFRE

Hi there
I have read up to Ascent 2, but at ascent one level really.
I am not so clear on where ‘well organised, non-linear notes’ fit in.  
Q 1:  For a given topic, there will be my AIM questions, mind map, and notes if needed – is this right? I
have this idea that we need to try to almost get rid of ‘notes’ and have the info on maps as much as
possible.
Q 2: What is the purpose of well-done notes compared to a mind map. Or what role do the notes play
that is not done in a mind map.

Hi Andrew, I think you are getting confused regarding mind maps and notes.
The mind map itself is the better way to take notes as it satisfies VPReFRE

You shouldn’t really proceed to ascent 3 without first doing ascent 1 properly then ascent 2
properly.

just a quick question, what would you do for notes that would be used in exams (for maths)? Because
like processed visual notes wouldn’t be able to really explain how to get the mark like how to get the
mark with the method. Or is it still good to have processed notes because looking back at it will remind
us of the process ?

Those aren’t notes for learning. Those are notes for a specific test.
So it’s best to have layer 4 information on that sheet so you don’t need to memorise arbitrary
information (more on that layers later in this stage).

Is the shoot process where we make it visual and relate it visually, different from when we relate visually
and relate themon a mind map? Or is skin process something to do with mindmapping? Does Note
processing of AIM And Shoot have to be done before mapping them or can AIM lead to MindMapping at
some stage?

Yes, the SHOOT step is where we give you more guidelines in mindmapping. Don’t worry about SKIN
yet, that to help organise your final mindmap.
So just make sure to do what is shown in each lesson in this stage.
AIM, SHOOT and SKIN is all mindmapping, you have already begun the process in the AIM stage.
SHOOT heavily relies on AIM to be done properly.

So when you are doing the processing bit from (VPRefre), should you be answering your aim questions
first by reviewing your material, by first drawing a line down the middle of the page, then using the left
side to collect the info in diagrams 1st then 2nd use the right side for processing it by asking what, why
and how it relates to other points. Or should you by now not do the left side info gathering bit and go
straight to the processing bit.

I think I am getting a decent grasp of writing things more efficiently at this point, and I do agree that I
seem to remember a lot more and reason through things better. I do have one problem though is that at
some point I still have to do some sort of revision given the mass amount of information I am learning at
once. Is there a more efficient way of revision besides putting the small things I dont remember into anki
cards?

Yeah, I try my best to do that manually using my own calendar, but are there any suggestions as
to how to have an automatic scheduler or reminder to study a certain subject again? I feel like
that would just alleviate some of the work. Thanks for the reply!

Plan it out. Such a program doesn’t exist as they don’t know your schedule or curriculum
that you are studying. If such a thing did exist, you would have to input the data in
yourself anyway.
You can’t take control of your time if you let something else take control of it.

Hi, so during the aim-step, we have to first collect keywords, can we use VPReFRE for that, to show the
basic organisation between the keywords before creating the questions ? Because at the moment I’m
just writing them down mindlessly and figured out that it would be better to do it otherwise and now
that I’m looking at VPReFRE, this question just popped up.

The process is AIM/SHOOT, so it’s natural to SHOOT after AIMING.
Collecting keywords is for the purpose of doing AIM and SHOOT properly.
